I was listening to the Hero of Canton song.
They say that 'the man' took 'every dollar and every cent'.

They didn't use that currency in the 'Verse, did they?

To double nit-pick:
It's "took every dollar and left 'em 5 cents".

And if you check the Firefly Companion, some of the money that was printed for the show had the $ dollar sign on it, so its possible there were cents as well.

You're right in the sense that we only heard about credits and__________, aw nuts, can't think of it, but I think its the value Simon used to describe the value of the medicine in the beginning of "Ariel".

Maybe Higgin's Moon uses dollars and cents.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

"Platinum" was the word Simon used in that episode.

I would assume that border planets and moons had internal money systems other than officially sanctioned Alliance credits, so there could be all sorts of different denominations used.

AAAANNNNNDDD, don't we say things like "by hook or by crook"--when we ain't pullin sheep around with things like that no more?

And there's plenty in our language from the elizabethan period, 500 years ago. Dead as a doornail, for one. Just cause this thread is nitpicky.

If the border and rim worlds didn't use cashy money, there would not have been no heist on Lilac.

Correct, except that it was The Alliance's cashy-money, not necessarily Lilac's currency.

We don't use doubloons as currency either but you'll still hear people calling a quarter two bits. It's a bit of linguistic hangover which happens from time to time.

Now that I think on it, "nit-picking" is something of a linguistic dinosaur as well. Unless there are those here who still go through their family's hair picking out lice eggs.

You just had to go and be accurate there, didn't you? If you'd had only just said "lice" instead of "lice eggs" we could all have had fun and hilarity nit-picking about nit-picking.

I had that in mind when I posted - that it could have just been an "old saying", but I was curious as to the conversation it would invoke.

I think credits refer to "Alliance money" and Platinum could be a slang term like how we use "cash" or "bills" today.

Also seeings how platinum is very rare and expensive, referring to money in that way may reflect what class you were brought up in Like $100 would be a Benjamin.

And lots of different worlds could mean different currencies so Higgins moon could have indeed used dollars and cents and Ariel could have used credits or platinum.

According to the RPG book the Core planets mostly use electronic banking (I guess like debit cards etc) and don't use a lot of folding money.

The folding money is mainly used in the Border areas and when that's not available, actual platinum is used. Illegal as all get out but used

Patience gave Mal a bag full of platinum for the bars in the pilot and it made appearances in other episodes too. A bit harder to carry, but lots harder to trace than an electronic trail.
