If Firefly were to be taken up once again which timeline would you prefer it to continue with ?

Firefly?
or
Serenity?

Firefly by a mile.

In Firefly they're family, in Serenity they're all hardened and different people.

Interesting. I liked the idea that just that little extra time out in the black had made them all that much harder and bitter. Especially Mal. As Kayleigh said : "He's likely to drive us all away" or words to that effect.

I think that was Mal lashing out because Inara and Book had left.

Mal got harder after Book had been killed. But by the end, when Mal had what was left of his family back (Including Inara) He's beginning to open up again. His conversation with River shows this

"Love keeps her in the air, makes her a home"

If Serenity hadn't happened, I'd say Firefly timeline, but I hate knowing what is going to happen before we get there (hence my extreme reluctance to prequels) -so we start after Serenity- maybe 5-10 years after Serenity so there is some new backstory elements that we don't know about the crew.

if it ever happened I'd want to pick up where firefly left off and just kinda discard serenity as an alternate universe or something.

I like serenity and all, but firefly is just so much better.

No doubt that Firefly was better than Serenity, but I would rather the story continue after the movie, with of course flashbacks with Book and Wash included.

I much prefer Serenity overall. I love Firefly but I think by the studio's request the characters had become softened. I much prefer the hardened edge the film took, and I would favour that kind of a show over the sweet nature Firefly was heading towards.
Still need the humour of course.

Interesting thread here.

Go with the old, trusty crew or advance the timeline to a crew with replacements (I know, I know)trying to keep fed and keep flying. A bit of boom and bust here and there, like Train Job, a few assists to needy folk (Nandy could use a revisit), moving along in an unforgiving Whedonverse.

I don't know where to go, but I'd like the writing to be as good as Firefly, the characters as good as Serenity.

It seems it was too much to ask for just one... Real shame.

... I wonder how folk would feel if it ran from Serenity onwards and we had to endure our beloved show without Wash and Book? I must say I couldn't see why so many were upset by the loss of Wash and Book. It would have inevitably happened even if Firefly had continued...

Still Nandy coming back would be good.

Oh it would have to restart after Serenity. I couldn't accept that they just threw the movie out like it never happened. Though I would rather it start back up as a TV series rather than movies. Serenity is a good movie and all but it doesn't focus on the characters like Firefly did. I like the character focus.

As much as I love the movie, I'm gonna go with Firefly timeline. It's much more endearing and compelling. In Serenity, Whedon pulled all the stops to make one big damn movie. Very flashy and shiny indeed. Plus, no one's going to fly Serenity if there's no Wash. Just wouldn't be the same.

On a side note, what do you think will happen to Zoe if Serenity continued?

Well River is the perfect 'new' pilot for Serenity. She's intuative and a reader so she would anticipate danger in flight. That has to be a plus... As for Zoe. I reckon she'd probably die in battle.

I'd have to agree with those who've pointed out that if Firefly had continued, we would've inevitably encountered the same situation where regular characters died (it is a Joss Whedon series, after all), so my "preference" is to continue the timeline after Serenity, since I think of that as what "really" happened and not a matter of preference.

I know we all love the original cast, but imagine what beloved fan favourites might have emerged in further seasons...?

I don't know if many here have heard this interview with Joss but it has spoilers for what he planned for Firefly if it continued.

http://www.826nyc.org/

It's from this Sept 24 posting on Whedonesque and the information on the differences between Firefly and Serenity occur about 2/3 of the way through the interview. There was an earlier posting about some of the spoilers, but there are even more if you listen.

Full Joss Whedon and Ira Glass interview available. I'll let Joss and Ira explain: "We did this event hoping to raise money to teach writing to kids. We're kind of, you know, into writing. If you listen, and you're against helping schoolchildren with their homework and expanding their literary horizons, then certainly do not click the donate button. Everyone else, please click." This is one of the best Joss interviews in years.

Hope this isn't old news to you guys, but if it is, my apologies.

Great interview, Joss is honest and open about his work, really worth a listen and the donations are for a good cause.

I like what he said about Wash's and Zoe's marriage, Mal being the “older dude" or father/mentor to River, and his tendency to have those type of characters and relationships in his work.

Worried over what he said about Mal being extremely emotional, in the future, if the series would have continued...it makes me wonder what would have happened to cause such emotion and Mal’s ensuing arc, if any.

That one interview could redirect the path of fan fiction for some time to come. Not just the Mal and River part, but the Wash/Zoe part and the Mal at the end part. Sigh. Wish I could just crawl into Joss's head for a little while, peek around the Firefly future plot lines part, and satisfy that persistent nagging itch that just won't go away.

Unfortunately, I find Joss’s confirmation of what he wanted to do to be consistent with how I personally view the verse, characters and relationships, which isn’t a Fairytale, by any means, I’m not sure how that makes me feel, though.

The analogy of Giles to Buffy, Mal to River and Boyd to Echo is brilliantly drawn by the interviewer and is addressed admittedly, by Joss. It leads sweetly into Joss’s conversation about his relationship with his own father, something I don’t think he’s ever spoke about in an interview with such depth.

Wash alive in a real marriage with Zoe wrapped with love, respect and forgiveness, but fraught with conflict and problems definitely resonates with what we saw building in the series and comics.

Mal, emotional, at the end…yeah, Joss said he liked to punish him, I’m not so sure I want to see…cause it’s going to be terminally sad and the ending could go either way.

Anyway, the interviewer (whom, I’m unfamiliar with) gave us fabulous insights into Joss the writer and the man, highly recommended.

I know exactly what you mean. The 'verse as it is - meaning incomplete - can be open to interpretation in fan fic. As soon as Joss gets to finish it, I don't think the little bit of happy we saw Mal get in Firefly here and there is ever going to happen again. I know many people are drawn to angst. But I would rather see solutions. How difficult situations can be overcome by your belief in - whatever. But I still would like to know what Joss planned to do with everyone. I would just like it to have ended positively. Oh wait, this is from the creator of Dr Horrible!

Mo too! Som, we REACH!

I'd wanna see another movie, set 5 or so years after Serenity, with a couple of NEW peeps on the crew, one possibly being Jayne's wife or sumthin'.
