My top pick: Superman The Movie.
But Iron Man was absolutely awesome.
Batman Begins was riviting.
Incredible Hulk was truely engaging.
Spider-man was emotionally charged beyond expectation.

What is your favourite?

Or do you dismiss superheroes as being removed from your reality, a figment of the desire to see some sort of messiah rescue us from ourselves? An elusive and unrealistic Neo in our Matrix?

Tank Girl.

They somehow managed to stay true to the surreal ridiculousness of the comic, even in a movie medium - not to mention casting Lori Petty as TG and managing to convince L7 to do part of the soundtrack was pure genius.

Ice-T as an ex-cop ripper was comedy gold, too.

Yeah, that was great. But if we're going THERE, The Crow was supreme in the dark, indy world IMO.
Then there's Ultraviolet & Immortal. B-coolness.

Crow.
Batman Begins.
Superman.
Not comic book, but Last Action Hero is one of my faves.
If Col Steve Austin counts as superhero, that's in too. It started as a movie from the Martin Ciadin novel.

Batman Begins/Dark Knight - Excellent dark takes on Batman. All around brilliant films.
Hellboy - Both films are excellent comedy/action films.
Sin City - Great fun, unique.
Superman the Movie - A classic.
The Crow - only the first one though...
Iron Man - perfect fun filled summer blockbuster.
30 Days of Night - Lots of people disagree, but I really enjoyed this.

America loves a winner!

I was very pleasantly surprised at how well Iron Man was made. When I heard it was coming out, I feared MAJOR flop, mainly because I wasn't sure they'd be able to make the transition and 'update' the character. What a friggin awesome movie.

The first Spiderman was extremely well done as well. Some 'purest' have mentioned having issues w/ how Mary Jane was cast, but I think Kirsten Dunst is a perfect 'girl-next-door' babe.

However, my favorite in all these is X-Men. Such a monumental list of characters and sub plots to deal with, I think what was brought to the screen was fantastic.

Batman gets a definite honorable mention.

The first Superman movie only gets a nod from me because of Gene Hackman's performance.

" Miss TESMACHER !! "

The T.Rex they call JANE!

Ironman and it's not even close. The rest make way too many concessions to be "real worldy". Super heroes are supposed to be over the top out of this world stuff. I think movie goers are cool with it. So, let's just go all out.

I would love to see an X-men reboot where they stay much closer to the comics.

Yanno, that summed up my sentiments on it, too.

I got dragged, cause I wasn't gonna willingly watch another of these horrors, having hated every one so far, particularly the X-men ones...

But yes, they didn't do half bad there, a couple weak spots, but casting Downey as Stark was pure genius since he really has so much of the character in him, and his own best and worst moments have been as public, so his own flaws corresponded and made him absolutely, totally *believable* as Stark.

The only thing even close anywhere else in these Marvel-Movies was J.K. Simmons portrayal of J. Jonah Jameson in Spider-Man, while not an especially major part, he was jaw droppingly perfect on the role.

I really enjoy Iron Man... but don't consider it that "great". It was proficient, but also extremely predictable and by-the-numbers in terms of the script. Had anyone but Downey Jr. played the part, I don't think it would have worked as well. And he is great in it, but I can't call it a great movie just for one performance.

Any other actor I can even *think* of would have reduced it to just neat FX and a killer musical score, and that alone wouldn't have made me buy it. I agree that the script was paint-by-numbers, but Downey's little tossed off riffs made it one of the best performances in a superhero movie since Chris Reeve.

Pepper Potts: Is it safe?
Tony Stark: Yeah. It should be fine. It's just like Operation, just don't let it touch the socket or it'll go beep.
Pepper Potts: What do you mean operation?
Tony Stark: It's just a game. Never mind.

Your fondness for the score still amazes me, as it seems to be the one thing most film buffs dislike about the movie. Even Favs promised he'd get a better one for the sequel.

Of course, your taste often perplexes me.

Spiderman
Batman Begins and The Dark Knight
Watchmen

No particular order. I thought they were all great films. I probably missed some, but these entered my mind first. At least when my mind stops rattling.

Did you hear, they are going to start filming Spiderman 4. I hope it is better then the last one.

I liked Spider-man 3.
I am a sick puppy, I know.
I also liked X-3.
And both Fantastic Four movies.
And Daredevil (Director's cut)
AND Elektra (Well, the photography & music, anyway...)!
And TMNT!!!!

On the superhero front, I guess I'm easy to please, as long as Batman stars in HIS OWN MOVIE (Batman Returns)!!!! Or as long as Superman fights a DECENT SUPERVILLAIN (Superman IV) or doesn't have a S**T COSTUME (Superman Returns)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow. Just.... damn, man.

Really?

I mean, I can sorta understand liking X3 best, and almost understand liking Spidey 3 (not really, but I'll say so to sound sympathetic).... but Superman 4 just sucks.

Look, Superman IV is gutter trash, but at least the costume is right (and it's Reeve). Superman returns, while much better produced & directed, just totally loses me with whole speedo-brief/murky-coloured/rubber-cape/choking-collar thing. Honestly, I'd have more fun watching IV. But then, they're both crap, really.

EDIT: I wrote that last post badly anyway- I hated SIV, & both Returns.

Well, what did in X-men for me were a few things, but rolled up and totalled, it was the lack of the necessary ambiguity between the sides that cost it so much of it's draw - I mean, in the first one I guess they kinda tried, it's not blatant, but if you look you find that Pyro was the only one who instead of blind acceptance, actually *thought* about the situation and he made his OWN choice.

But that couldn't redeem the utter and total distortion of Magnetos character, there were two lines which struck such a raw note it was unbearable, especially when they were delivered with such COMPLETELY ANVILICIOUS directing and backed up by the soundtrack - so not only did they totally derail the character, they bashed you over the head with it, hard enough to really piss me off, in fact.

The first cringeworthy note ?
"You're not one of us any more."

He never, EVER woulda done that - one of the things that made Magneto so damned seductively ambiguous was that JUST LIKE Xavier, he stood by his own, hell or high water, even when they were in the wrong cause they were HIS people.

And the one that sent me from my seat to the threatre door ?
"This is why pawns go first."

Seriously, WTF ?
Magneto NEVER wasted his people, never abandoned em neither - without the polarity changed similarities between Xavier and Magneto, and their people, the story DOES NOT WORK, it becomes mere tripe and unappetizing.

It was always the fact that Magneto WASN'T a complete monster, that he HAD A POINT and was scarily sympathetic that made him the great villain he was, and best of all, just how similar he and Xavier were beneath his cynicism and Xaviers idealism - how we could all go either way as a matter of what WE chose, the choices WE make.

That was the root of the stories value, and they tossed it out in favor of reducing Magneto to a republic serial villain who is neither sympathetic, nor even very scary - plus they made him STUPID - which he never in a million years would ever be.

Magento woulda used that bridge as a damned bulldozer, scraped that place clean off the map and then dropped it from a half a mile up to finish the job - only reason he'd have brought flunkies at all would be to mop up, make sure, and capture anything of use for deployment against the Xavier and his cronies, and he'd agonise before doing so since that would make him as bad as the folks he was warring against, and would only resort to such in desperation.

Anyhows, I could pick it to death, but you get the idea.

Eh, the costume wasn't great, but I didn't hate it. That, I consider it one of the least important aspects. It's not a classic film, but I thought it was pretty decent. Had some subtext, and is more proficiently made than many superhero flicks.

Sin City = superb cinematographic, bestest 'film noir' flic of all time.
The Incredibles = A derivative of Fantastic Four, of course, but it was delightfully funny and entertaining. And I always had a thing for Elastigirl (huh, must be that nubile & bendy thingy).

Oh yeah, YOU try not looking at something that horrifies YOU in a movie.
Subtext, please. Superman IV had a subtext too- but neither movie is good enough that I'd care to, even for a moment, waste my free time entertaining the IDEA of actually firing up the 4 brain cells needed to discuss it.

Wanna talk subtext in Dark Angel?
