By 'nice story' I mean a film that just tells a story, it doesn't particularly have to go anywhere but just shows you a piece of life involving the characters. It may have comedy elements, tragedy, drama or any other the other themes out there, but doesn't necessarily fit into any of these genres.
Plus it needs to leave you with that warm, contented, slighty happier feeling by the time the movie is over.

My list will probably illustrate the type of film I'm talking about. I seem to be watching this type of movie recently so I thought I'd see what others liked. In no order as it just the ones I've re-watched:

1. Field Of Dreams
2. Forrest Gump (love the way he passes through life unaware of what's really going on around him)
3. The Green Mile
4. Lawn Dogs (Sam Rockwell shows why he's a great actor)
5. The Ice Storm (okay not so much with the happy ending)
6. Garden State
7. Bridge To Terabithia
8. The Station Agent
9. Juno

And your picks are....

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I don't have many of that type on my dvd shelf, but I do have and I concur on Field of Dreams. Great film.

Here are a few others:
Breaking Away
Fanboys
Four Friends
The In-Laws (original with Peter Falk and Alan Arkin)
Local Hero
Pleasantville
Say Anything
The Unbearable Lightness of Being (I know there are a lot of downer moments in it but it basically is about friendship, loyalty and love)

And is there a better example than the perennial Yuletide favorite, It's a Wonderful Life?

I'm a big fan of the "nice story" movie, but I'm kinda demanding--can't stand It's a Wonderful Life, f'rinstance, not so much because it's too "nice" or anything, but because I find George Bailey morally repugnant.

Anyhoo, my personal "nice story" movies are more along the lines of the following (I gotta million of 'em!):

Happy-Go-Lucky
Stardust
Amelie
The Girl in the Cafe
Next Stop Wonderland
Rushmore (love that movie!)
Dan in Real Life
I Heart Huckabees
Little Miss Sunshine
Once Around
The Object of My Affection
WALL-E (the most delightful dystopia movie you will ever love!)
Bad Santa(!)

And the following movies are rather something more than "nice stories," something more epic than nice, but they sure leave me with that "nice story" feelin':

Spirited Away
Princess Mononoke
Singin' in the Rain
The Big Lobowski(!)

And just so all you folks who love It's a Wonderful Life can have your revenge on me:

The Lake House

HKCavalier

Hey, hey, hey, don't be mean. We don't have to be mean, because, remember, no matter where you go, there you are.

Ooh, yeah - I need to put Stardust on my BluRay list! I'd forgotten about that movie!

If there is, I haven't found it. Just watched it last night.

I concur.

I'll see your Once Around and raise you an "Always". Love that movie!

Bad Santa(!)

Just the name of the Plus Size Ladies' department, "Three Times A Lady", cracks me up.

The Big Lebowski(!)

Yup.

Why does In Bruges leave me with a "nice story" feeling? It's not particularly happy, but it's somehow uplifting...

from those already mentioned:

Field of Dreams
Miracle on 34th St ( the original-- I watch it every year.)

I (Heart) Huckabees is weird and wonderful, but not a fave.
The Station Agent is a lovely little film, but not a "must see again".

Four for the list, off the top of my head, quick-like:
Galaxy Quest
The Princess Bride
The Legend of Bagger Vance
The Milagro Bean Field War.

And one more for a bonus;
Independence Day ( One of the supporting roles is well played by an actor I've seen somewhere else, but he's hard to recognize: he cleans up real well...)

Well……there are plenty, but right off the top of my old skull.

Forest Gump ( I totally agree with)

To Kill a Mockingbird ( an oldie but I still enjoy it and feel it’s one of the best pieces of celluloid ever created)

Those are just 2.

Since I’m not limiting myself to movies I have to say that the Firefly saga is one of the best pieces of storytelling ever produced for the small screen. Every episode seemed to finish on a positive note.

READ this one :

http://www.starnewsonline.com/article/20091212/ARTICLES/912119956

'...Right now Maria calls herself “Mei Mei,” Chinese for “little sister.”

But in English, Maria has learned “nice to meet you,” and she says “I love you” to almost everyone she meets and likes.

Maria loves vegetables, fruits and walnuts. Now she is getting used to brown rice, whereas she always ate sticky white rice in China.

She's gone from sharing a large room with many people in the orphanage to her own bedroom, her own closet, toys and photos on the walls.

In China, she didn't own a thing, not even the clothes she wore.'
