Haven't seen Avatar yet. Might wait till it comes out on Blu-Ray. But as you all see it I'd like to know how Avatar rates up against Serenity or even some of the better Firefly episodes.
Avatar costs more than 100 episodes of Firefly...so was it worth it?

As you see it, let us know how you think it stacks up.

And didn't it cost about eight times what Serenity cost to make?

'Course, in the end it doesn't matter whether it's better or not - if it makes more money, it's seen by Hollywood as "better".

Now, as to your question - Is it 100 times better than an episode of Firefly, or is it 8x better than Serenity? I haven't seen it, but I'll go out on a limb and say that's pretty much impossible. :)

Firefly had fewer aliens, Avatar had fewer cow fetuses, Serenity, Firefly, and Avatar had folks with blue hands.

Seems like apples and oranges to me - I love the characters of Firefly best, but imho Cameron's Aliens was a better movie.

I'd be curious if people think the 3D effects are okay, good, even a paradigm shift (gag) in film making. Or if it's just a hooey gimmick. I know I'm leaning toward the latter going in, but I'm trying to keep an open mind.

I don't see a need to compare them, just because they nominally share a genre. I like lots of scifi films, and don't feel a need to weight each against Serenity or any other film.

And why is this in RWED?

Everything I've read so far indicates there's little of the "stab-you-in-the-eye" approach to 3D, and it's used more for deep staging in shots, pushing the 3D depth back into the image, as if looking through a window rather than hurtling images AT you.

Firefly, Serenity, and Avatar all exist in the Real World. Avatar is now in theaters and will likely be a big hit, that makes it an event. We are discussing it and comparing it to them, hence the RWED.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

Avatar is worth it. Go see it as soon as you can.

Is it as good or better than Serenity? As a piece of film-making magic, in terms of the technology involved and its potential impact on future films (especially genre ones), I would say yes.

But it has no characters I care about more than Mal and his crew, and I doubt there will ever be another ship I care for more than Serenity.

Riiiiight. Because we don't have a forum for Sci Fi franchises.... oh, wait, we do.

I hope you rationalize better in court.

A blockbuster movie opening is an event. It can be talked about.

Events happen, you can't pick and choose what is or is not an event, only how you want to respond to it.

If you have nothing to contribute, skip it and move on to PN's latest Nazi Contrail Pedophile posting.
