Question of the day! It's a toughie.

Congratulations, you have all just won an all expense paid trip to the 'Verse! Where do we drop you off at? You have your choice of Sunny Allianceville which is a lot like the upscale parts of Florida or Wisteria Lane...except if you dare to put a pink Flamingo on your lawn you run the risk of being picked up by people with blue rubber gloves and having pointy things shoved into your frontal cortex. Your children will have the best in brainwashing schooling and you will most likely live to be 115 very average years old thanks to state of the art medicines. Yippee.

Or you have the option to go to lovely Down-to-Earth-that-was-Independant-ville which is alot more like rural parts of Missouri or South Africa.(<< For the most part you will be left alone to partake in whatever illicit device that tickles your fancy the most. Your children will probably be able to graduate from...oh -8th grade? Your medicines will most likely come from an herbalist or shaman but if you need an actual surgery you are pretty much outta luck unless someone can poach a passing doctor genius... but do you really want someone under a knife to be holding a knife on YOU? What can HERE offer you, you ask? Freedom! Well, partial freedom anyway, 'cause remember sometimes that boundry between you and your slave-holdin'-gun totin'-probably molestin'-eco terrorist of a neighbor doesn't really exist... So ask yourself, do you really have the balls to rough it here?

Interesting question - though you're not exactly selling me on either option! In fact, Imma gonna steal a ship and get a crew and take my chances on the black.

Ok, this was supposed to be a sociological research type question, as I was curious what people would and would not live with and since getting a ship and a crew and going bye-bye is not really a valid alternatve for MOST of us, I was wondering who here (I hear tell quite a few here consider themselves to be in the anarchist range!) would own up to be willing to take a mediocre core life over an unpredictable outer world life...BTW, I'm still not sure what I would take. Both are good and both ...suck.

America loves a winner!

Insufficient data to offer a hard answer.

While I'll give you that the Alliance living is close enough to accurate, I'm not sure we have a full view of what life on the border planets can be like.

You present a Green Acres sort of view, either down town Manhattan or out in the sticks rural living.

Even in the most desolate of places, I'd have to think that there'd be some level of technology available that would make living on the more tolerable.

Summer Glau can simply walk into Mordor

Bones: "Don't 'rawr' her!"
Booth: "What? she'rawred' me first."

I think it would depend on what you're starting out with. If you have money, power, and resources, you may want to head out to the outer rim where you can afford security, education, and provide for your own healthcare. Otherwise, if your option is to basically live like a serf, or a miner, a poor farmer, etc...well, economic freedom and opportunities count for a lot and doesn't seem like you get much of that out there - freedom to work yourself to the bone and into an early grave just to put food on the table, at the risk of mercenaries and thugs, doesn't sound much like freedom to me. And from what little we see in the show, if you're female and end up on the wrong planet, you're doubly screwed, and not in a good way.

Ok, I just hafta say I'm depressed, then I'll let this thread die, 'K?... Not a single person managed to pick a theoretical planet in a theoretical question? Come on!! It only took me a day to decide and you all have had weeks!!!
For shame, for shame....

Um, pretty sure the rim will have all of that. When life is hard, you can pretty much expect moonshiners and brewery stills and large amounts of alcohol to help make things tolerable. Even Kaylee came up with a inter-engine fermentation system, that just says how widespread - and necessary - it is.

In fact, simply because WATER wasn't trustworthy in the ol' west, or even in EUROPE in the 1800s, most people drank alcoholic beverages back then instead. That probably wouldn't change out on the rim, unless you like cholera.

I'd go for the rim. I already live in the west. Wouldn't be that much different, and on occasion I seriously consider running for the hills and living like a hobo over having to go to work and dealing with society. Then I go on a week long backpacking trek and feel better about the world. Still. If I could do that, like ALL THE TIME, it would be my freakin' DREAM. In 30 or so years when I finally get to retire, I'm gonna be a sun crisped raisin from being outside so much.

A-Freakin'-men! I'm a Domestic Goddess most of the time but those brief forays into the "normal" world make me run screaming! My latest pet peeve is when you go to a checkout and people are being forced to ask you for your phone number, your zip code, your name, your cousin's childhood nickname, ect.. You don't need to know that just so I can buy glue sticks!!!!

Anyhoo, welcome to the rim, hon! I'm a great neighbor and I'm really good at minding my own business, most of the time... I do like to meet new people in the neighborhood, justa size them, up if nothing else!
