I don't think it's that bad. It plays on a violent cultural/racial stereotype which is dangerous, but holds it up in an admiring light I think. That's not to say I like the joke, or racial stereotype jokes in general.

If the point here is that maher is an asshole, that's not news. If the point here is that the lefty audience is not nearly sensitive enough to take it's own side to task for transgressions, then you have a point. Of course, if your point is that people are a little to tight assed a out this sort of thing, which I'm sure would be bill mahers honest response, then you also have a point, but its somewhat dickish a position.

Generally I don't have much sympathy with the offended, I think it's only something to worry about when it becomes a pattern for society as a whole, like the way people currently discuss Latinos and Muslims.

Hello,

I have often enjoyed the Maher show for its 'talk panel' portion, where three guests are invited to discuss various topics with him. Sometimes an additional guest expert is brought in to offer insight. While Maher does his best to direct the guests into delivering his talking points for him, he is frequently stymied by one or more uncooperative participants who present their own point of view. To his credit, he keeps inviting these people back. I suspect he realizes that genuine debate is more interesting than a chorus.

I do not like his extreme anti-religious stance, nor his recent lumping of all Libertarians in with the worst spokespersons of the Tea Party movement. I also hate it when he uses 'Tea Baggers' and other derogatory nicknames. He seems too willing to make generalizations in order to paint his opposition in a bad light. In effect, he is intolerant. The jewel of his show really is the talking panel, where mostly civil debates happen, and despite his best efforts, the 'opposition' representatives actually score a few points.

However, this 'Our president isn't black enough because he does not display the traits of thuggery in his dealings with people' is awful. Not funny. And if done by the anti-Obama crowd, it would have been a very big and bad deal.

I'll add that the additional jokes of people on this very thread are just as bad.
