Maybe he just doesn't wanna be touched by strangers or had a bad experience, me and hubby are with him on that one, people are nasty germy and weird... I never touch anyone without being invited first!

Not a hugger!

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

In the context of Comic-Con or any other convention or fan gathering that Nathan has attended, he is about the most accessible and genial guy I've ever seen. Being accosted in a restaurant is another matter. No reason he shouldn't have been a little skittish in that situation.

Nathan has stated multiple times, on both his twitter and his myspace blog back when he was still doing that, that he does NOT appreciate it when strangers (fans) come up to him and whack him on the arm, the back, grab his ass which apparently a couple of girls did, etc. And I don't blame him one bit, and it seems like something he has dealt with more than once, probably *because* he presents himself as so genial and because he clearly likes his fans. People seem to take liberties.

That said, what you described sounds more like an over-reaction for comedic effect on his part (while still being half serious). Did he give any indication he was slightly kidding? Otherwise, it IS Comic-con, maybe he was already "touched-out" (to borrow a phrase from parenting mags) by that point and was a little more on edge than usual.

Or maybe he's cracking up. who knows.

I remember from somewhere waaaay back reading an interview or posting or the like.
He said that when you see him in public he actually prefers something simple like "just nod and say Cap'n" as you pass.

Not everybody gets off on being mobbed, and personal space is for EVERYONE.

Or he could have been totally goofing and somewhat sleep deprived.

Or he told his companion he was someone waaay cooler and more famous and then someone went and blew his cover.

Nathan was likely just surprised at someone calling out his name in a public place not in an entertainment venue. I’m sure everyone around looked to see what was going on, and at that moment he just wanted to be one of the crowd. Nathan’s a good guy. I don’t think this had anything to do with him just wanting to be rude. He was just caught off-guard and reacted in a defensive manner. That was all.

I'd say he was trying to make light of the situation but at the same time making his opinion clear...and fair enough. I think no touching is an appropriate boundary. just because you are famous and a nice person doesn't mean you have to allow strangers that think they know you/care for you into your bubble. a polite greeting should be enough. It's up to the fans/admirers to show some courtesy and not go too far. If he invites touching then that's his prerogative.
Though I'm not famous (and hopefully never will be) I have on occasion addressed large groups of people or run workshops etc. I always mix in some humour and am mindful of being gracious and open...for some reason there's always one or two people who think that makes me more familiar to them, and they always go for a hug or some other kind of touching when they see me at other places. it never fails to freak me out and I'm waaaay less funny about it than Mr Fillion.
