John Jay Doggett was born on April 4, 1960 in the small northern Georgia town of Democrat Hot Springs. The town was a popular spot among the rich until the springs dried up and people stopped coming. After that the town's population eventually left and it became a ghost town. Doggett was then raised in Atlanta.

At the age of seventeen, Doggett joined the United States Marine Corps and went on to serve in the 24th Marine Amphibious Unit, where he eventually attained the rank of Sergeant (an E-5). From September 1st 1982 to October 10th 1983, he played a role in the Multi-National Peacekeeping Force for Lebanon Development. With six years in the military, Doggett retired with commendations after being wounded in the line of duty.

Doggett obtained his Masters in Public Administration and his Juris Doctorate from Syracuse University, which he attended from 1983 to 1986. He was enrolled in the joint degree program which is designed to help students obtain two degrees in a shorter amount of time that it would take to obtain the degrees through separate programs. While at Syracuse University, Doggett met his wife Barbara. Their son Luke was born on January 9th 1986, a little over a year after they married.

Doggett joined the New York Police Department in 1987. Three years later, he was promoted to Detective in the Fugitive Division's Warrant section. This section is responsible for apprehending persons wanted on felony bench warrants, indictment warrants and arrest warrants. There, he worked closely with investigators from other state and federal law enforcement agencies.

On August 13th 1993, Luke Doggett was kidnapped and after a three-day search, he was found dead. He and Barbara separated soon after and eventually divorced, apparently because John couldn't handle Luke's death well and put his wife through hell.

Doggett began attending classes and training at the FBI National Academy at Quantico at same time that he was a Detective with the NYPD. This is a common practice for police officers if they have the opportunity to go to Quantico to receive extra training. He also did this to help cope with his grief after his son died and he and his wife divorced. He overworked himself to deal with grief, that way he didn't have to face or show his emotions - he set his emotions aside by focusing on all his work.

After graduating from Quantico in 1995, Doggett moved to Falls Church, Virginia and was given his first assignment as a Special Agent. He was assigned to the Criminal Investigations Division. The FBI assigns new agents a minimum of four years to their first assignment. By 1999 Doggett had the opportunity to request a preferred assignment if he did not like CID. Since the CID also takes care of child abduction cases, Doggett stayed assigned to that division. He could help find missing children and help families reunite - something that didn't happen with his family.

In the CID, Doggett was always willing to conform to the government's blueprint. He became a consummate insider on the fast track to success. Approaching all of his investigations like a doubting cop, he believes that everything can be explained with standard police techniques. So it was no surprise that after only five years at the Bureau, Doggett was assigned by Deputy Director Alvin Kersh as the task force leader to find missing Special Agent Fox Mulder. After turning in a report that included inconclusive findings, Kersh reassigned Doggett to the X-Files Division. Doggett was assigned partner to Special Agent Dana Scully, to investigate unexplained phenomena. Kersh may have set him up to fail in the FBI.

In 2001, Doggett assigned Special Agent Monica Reyes as his new partner after he suspected Kersh was involved in some government alien conspiracy. Reyes remained his partner after Scully gave birth to her son (William) and decided to teach at Quantico rather than return to field work in the X-Files Division. Doggett frequently called upon Scully for her advice, expertise and assistance in their cases.

In 2002, after Mulder was sentenced to death for murdering Knowle Rohrer. Doggett, Skinner and Kersh broke Mulder out to save his life. Doggett and Reyes returned to D.C. only to find everything taken out of their office, everything had disappeared. We do not know if Doggett and Reyes continued to work for the FBI or not, or if they are destined to live life on the run like Mulder and Scully for helping a convicted murderer escape the death penalty.
