I just learned of this book. I'll probably never be able to locate it in a bookstore (would order it through Amazon, but I don't like buying things online).

I was mostly curious because there apparently is a "chapter" by Joss Whedon telling what became of the characters after "Serenity". I'm curious as to what happened to all of them.

Well, there's a lot of ways to take that chapter. First, it's not by Joss Whedon, it's by Jose Molina, who was another writer for the show. Second, it's a short story, not a "here's how it is."

At the very end of the story, it says something about "But this – the here and now – is not time for musings. This is time to act." Then the story cuts straight into the fight with the Operative. The suggestion is, possibly, that was more of Mal's imaginings of the worst case scenario and his pessimism about the future than it is what REALLY happens. So I've always taken that story as more insights into Mal than as canon "The End."

In the very least, one of the ideas Mal has about the future, that he has to go into seclusion because of the fame that sending the Miranda Broadwave earns him is already Jossed by the end of the movie, when Mal comments that the 'verse is already rolling over and going back to sleep.

rather than Simon, River, and Kaylee leaving Zoe in charge of Serenity and her having no one to talk to after Wash dies, Zoe turns out to be pregnant with Wash's daughter.

You've been misinformed on a few counts. As BM points out, this isn't a chapter, but a short story. The short story is NOT written by Joss (although it is written by one of the show's writers), and the short story is not in any way canon, but, as BM indicates, Mal's musings. The short story takes place during the movie, so it has no impact on the ACTUAL future of our heroes.

To date, the only canon story that occurs post-SERENITY is the comic one-shot FLOATOUT.

You might be surprised - I actually found it in the shelf a month or so ago in our local Hastings Entertainment store. Also, our local stores will order things for you in stores - our independent booksellers in town don't (though I know of ones who do in other towns), but our corporate stores definitely order things for customers. Another alternative to buying online. I really enjoyed the book - it's the first like it I've read, and with my Christmas money I just ordered the Firefly The Official Companion: Volume 1. So, I have no comparison. But I did really enjoy the book. Hope this helps. -Honey F
