Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish.
Albert Einstein

Democratic principles are the result of equality of condition.
Mercy Otis Warren

Equality is the soul of liberty; there is, in fact, no liberty without it.
Frances Wright

From the equality of rights springs identity of our highest interests; you cannot subvert your neighbor's rights without striking a dangerous blow at your own.
Carl Schurz

I am an aristocrat. I love liberty; I hate equality.
John Randolph

I am free of all prejudices. I hate every one equally.
W. C. Fields

I believe in equality for everyone, except reporters and photographers.
Mohandas Gandhi

If liberty and equality, as is thought by some, are chiefly to be found in democracy, they will be best attained when all persons alike share in government to the utmost.
Aristotle

If we were to select the most intelligent, imaginative, energetic, and emotionally stable third of mankind, all races would be present.
Franz Boas

In America everybody is of the opinion that he has no social superiors, since all men are equal, but he does not admit that he has no social inferiors, for, from the time of Jefferson onward, the doctrine that all men are equal applies only upwards, not downwards.
Bertrand Russell

Real equality is immensely difficult to achieve, it needs continual revision and monitoring of distributions. And it does not provide buffers between members, so they are continually colliding or frustrating each other.
Mary Douglas

There can be no equality or opportunity if men and women and children be not shielded in their lives from the consequences of great industrial and social processes which they cannot alter, control, or singly cope with.
Woodrow Wilson

Virtue can only flourish among equals.
Mary Wollstonecraft

We who are liberal and progressive know that the poor are our equals in every sense except that of being equal to us.
Lionel Trilling

"There can be no equality or opportunity if men and women and children be not shielded in their lives from the consequences of great industrial and social processes which they cannot alter, control, or singly cope with."

I think Woodrow Wilson said it well.

It's not personal. It's just war.

FREMDFIRMA

Which is funny, in a tremendously hypocritical way if you know anything about Wilson at all...
Quote:

"Jedi do not fight for peace. That's only a slogan, and is as misleading as slogans always are. Jedi fight for civilization, because only civilization creates peace. We fight for justice because justice is the fundamental bedrock of civilization: an unjust civilization is built upon sand. It does not long survive a storm."

From Shatterpoint
(FWIW: I am not fond of the Jedi, and consider this a lie, but it's a good principle.)
Quote:

"We can each sit and wait to die, from the very day of our births. Those of us who do not do so, choose to ask--and to answer--the two questions that define every conscious creature: What do I want? and What will I do to get it? Which are, finally, only one question: What is my will? Caine teaches us that the answer is always found within our own experience; our lives provide the structure of the question, and a properly phrased question contains its own answer."

From Blade of Tyshalle.

The notion of equality and justice within a person, individually, I think, can be refined by that oh so simple, oh so complex question - WHAT DO YOU WANT ?

Because if the answer to that involves taking it from someone else, you have your answer, and if it involves giving, then you have your answer as well - and when it involves neither, so too is that an answer, yes ?

Frem,

You beat me to it on trashing Wilson. "Shielding" is of course another way of saying "Controlling." Be wary of anyone who shields you from anything. That includes your antivirus software.

Also, I concur on the Jedi, I find them to be social elitists trying to decide what's right for everyone else as a self appoint social designer.

I guess all that leaves me to say is that Aristotle thought democracy was an absolutely terrible system of govt. that would create mediocrity. Nietzsche would later correct him: It was much worse, it would create the worst of humanity.

On equality, we're born equal, it's up to us to fuck it up. Of course, we're not identical, only equal. Parents, like anyone in power, have a tendency to fuck things up so it's good to get your independence early.

KWICKO

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

[Our] principles [are] founded on the immovable basis of equal right and reason.
-- Thomas Jefferson, to James Sullivan, 1797. ME 9:379

An equal application of law to every condition of man is fundamental.
-- Thomas Jefferson, to George Hay, 1807. ME 11:341

That liberty [is pure] which is to go to all, and not to the few or the rich alone.
-- Thomas Jefferson, letter to Horatio Gates (1798)

The most sacred of the duties of a government [is] to do equal and impartial justice to all its citizens.
-- Thomas Jefferson, note in Destutt de Tracy, "Political Economy," 1816. ME 14:465

To unequal privileges among members of the same society the spirit of our nation is, with one accord, adverse."
-- Thomas Jefferson, to Hugh White, 1801. ME 10:258

All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that though the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will, to be rightful, must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal laws must protect, and to violate which would be oppression.
-- Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1801

And let us reflect that, having banished from our land that religious intolerance under which mankind so long bled and suffered, we have yet gained little if we countenance a political intolerance as despotic, as wicked, and capable of as bitter and bloody persecutions.... error of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it.... I deem the essential principles of our government.... Equal and exact justice to all men, of whatever state or persuasion, religious or political; ... freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and freedom of person under the protection of the habeas corpus, and trial by juries impartially selected.
-- Thomas Jefferson, First Inaugural Address, March 4, 1801

In America, no other distinction between man and man had ever been known but that of persons in office exercising powers by authority of the laws, and private individuals. Among these last, the poorest laborer stood on equal ground with the wealthiest millionaire, and generally on a more favored one whenever their rights seem to jar.
-- Thomas Jefferson, Answers to de Meusnier Questions, 1786. ME 17:8

[The] best principles [of our republic] secure to all its citizens a perfect equality of rights.
-- Thomas Jefferson, Reply to the Citizens of Wilmington, 1809. ME 16:336

And those are just a few of Jefferson's thoughts on equality. He was in favor of it, in case you couldn't tell. ;)

You did, that's where I found it

As for Woodrow Wilson as president, people trashing him was part of the little I'd heard about him... I won't defend the man, but I'll defend the quote, and salute the man for grasping and voicing eloquently an important concept.

It's not personal. It's just war.
