Gadhafi's youngest son killed in NATO airstrike

BENGHAZI, Libya -- A NATO airstrike Saturday night killed the youngest son of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and three of his grandsons at his son's home in Tripoli, the Libyan government said.

NATO hadn't confirmed late Saturday that it carried out the airstrike that killed Seif al-Arab Gadhafi, 29. Regime officials said that Moammar Gadhafi and his wife were visiting the home when it was struck, but both were unharmed.

Gadhafi's youngest son's death comes one day after the Libyan leader appeared on state television calling for talks with NATO to end the airstrikes, which have been hitting Tripoli and other Gadhafi strongholds since last month. Gadhafi suggested there was room for negotiation, but he vowed to stay in Libya.

Western officials have been divided in recent weeks over whether Gadhafi is a legitimate military target under the United Nations Security Council resolution that authorized the air campaign. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said last week that NATO was "not targeting Gadhafi specifically" but that his command-and-control facilities - including a facility inside his sprawling Tripoli compound that was hit with airstrikes last Monday - were legitimate targets.
The Pentagon wouldn't confirm the airstrike late Saturday.

The Obama administration is said to believe that killing Gadhafi under the current conditions would exceed the U.N. mandate, which calls for airstrikes to protect civilians.
U.S. officials rejected an assertion last month by Gates' British counterpart, Liam Fox, who said that assassinating Gadhafi was "potentially a possibility." British Prime Minister David Cameron said that coalition forces didn't have the legal authority to do so.

The apparent NATO airstrike excited rebels, who thus far have not been able to break the leader's hold on the capital, Tripoli.

In Benghazi, the rebel capital, the city erupted into revelry that sounded much like warfare. Residents set off bombs and explosives, shot rounds into the air and honked their horns. But the signals of joy were clear: Amid the sounds were cheers from residents who ran out into the streets to celebrate even as fireballs shot up into the sky.

Meanwhile, on Libyan state television, commentators mourned Seif al-Arab and spoke of all the ways the regime would survive what they described as a unjust act.

Seif al-Arab was considered the least dangerous of Gadhafi's immediate family. Seif al-Arab is not Seif al-Islam, another of Gadhafi's sons and heir apparent to his regime up until the uprising began here two months ago.

A 2009 U.S. State Department cable released by WikiLeaks said that Seif al-Arab "reportedly spends most of his time in Munich, where he is involved in ill-defined business pursuits and spends much of his time partying."

(Nancy Youssef reported from Benghazi, Libya. Shashank Bengali reported from Tunis, Tunisia.)

Every Libyan gets paid $500/year from the Libyan govt, as dividends from the govt-owned oil export business.

Every Libyan pays 5-cents per gallon for gasoline.

Every Libyan is paid $50,000 dowry from the Libyan govt, as reward for getting married and starting a family.

Every Libyan pays zero percent interest on bank loans and credit cards, as required by Islamic Sharia law.

Jews can't stand for that, hence the invasion.

Hence the British Royal Wedding, to sweep Their kosher blood under the carpet.

I wish the quadruple S had gone in and massacred Qadaffi. Then we wouldn't be in this Libya mess. Then again I think we should have only sent them in if the rebels had a plan to take qadaffi's place with something that wouldn't be as bad and that the people wanted.

I wish you would leave Will and Kate out of it. It's not like they decided to get married because the media needed a distraction. I mean, we have Charlie Sheen for that [/snark]

Seriously, you poison everything.

On a less serious note, clarify? You mean that Jews will not let Jews be accountable? Just so we're clear on who we're blaming for what and why. I accept your rather absurd notion that Obama is a Jew, because there are certainly Jews who tell him what to do, and it's accurate to say "Jews brought us the housing collapse" because there were a lot of Jews involved. It is not accurate to say "The Jews brought us the housing collapse," because that would implicate millions of people, lots of whom were probably on the wrong end of that one.

It would like saying "Blacks institute death squads against whites" because of the abuses by Eric Holder and Barack Obama of the 4th and 5th and 8th amendments when it comes to searches seizures, detainment, rights to due process, punishments, assassinations, etc.

It would be a mischaracterization and probably offensive, but it would at least be an accurate statement. It would be made inaccurate by saying "The blacks" (who Donald Trump gets along with so well, that would be Mr. and Mrs. Black) or "Only Blacks."

Now if you say "Blacks" and you're referring to eric holder and barack obama and the black panther voter intimidation case, then you're just asking for trouble ;)

ETA:

Take this as an example. Someone posted puppycam. Why didn't you launch into a huge tirade with pictures of carnage denouncing dogs for their role in police work and warfare. Nazi dogs were very useful in rounding up Jews. German Shepherds are great for that, because they're smart. I had one once. It didn't kill me. Maybe it hadn't had its MKULTRA mind laser alien jew-hating German programming. Mom had a dog once trained to attack black people. Not her fault, it was a dog from the shelter. Got to old to be effective at attacking, though not too old to scare people.

I'm sorry, I still don't follow. Is evil inherited? Is that the way it works?

Your header is correct, btw, it's just that your sell lacks something.

ETA: Riona, Democracy is not the only form of govt. All govts. are basically established as a result of some sort of majority support or foreign insurgency. It's pretty clear that the rebels represent an insurgency. Whether or not Mr. Qadaffi represents the best interests of his people is less clear, but often dictators do. I think if you were to ask him, he'd say that it was his mission, as did Musharraf.

I recall the issue coming up before democracy came to power (Okay, I know Frem is cracking up at this point) in Pakistan, but I'm continuing this rather absurd train of thought for a reason, I have a point to make.

Pervez Musharraf was asked why he didn't do something to crack down on the Pashtun rebels who "aligned themselves with radical elements such as Al Qaeda and the Taliban" or some western nonsense like that.

Anyway, his response was "Because they are my people." He went on to clarify, he's not one of them of course, he's a south asian, and they're persians, he's a secular moderate and they're muslim extremists, but his point was that they were "15% of my population" and that any good leader was responsible for looking after the welfare of "all of his people" rather than just his own kind or those on his own side.

I thought "what an interesting perspective." It's the sort of perspective you only have if you're king. If you're a democratically elected leader, than not only can you steamroll a 15% minority that disagrees with you; those who put you in power might *demand* it, as part of the reason they put you in power.

Right now the Christian right is about 25% of the population of the US. Barack Obama is not obliged to look after their well being, in fact, he operates contrary to their well being. They didn't vote for him, and they're not going to contribute money to his re-election campaign. Same with Bush and the poor blacks of New Orleans. That's majority rule for you. Now Pakistan has Zardari, who is "attacking his own people." Not the majority, that 15% minority that disagrees with the govt. In a Democracy? How can that happen? Oh right, that's how it happens.

It's been happening in democracies all over the world for some time. As our president is fond of saying "It's complicated."

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.
