Technology Question:

In the Pilot episode (Serenity) Book and Kaylee have a brief conversation about the Firefly class. Kaylee asks if Book ever travelled on a Firefly. He says he had, Long before she was crawling. However, the model he rode was an Aught Two, and didn't have the extenders on it. Tended to shake a bit. Book even points at something as he says this... apparently, he's pointing at the extenders.

So, what are the extenders? What external feature of the ship is an 'extender?'

CYBERSNARK

I'm guessing (judging by Book's gesture and the description of the ship shaking) that the extenders are those hinged wings that the side engines are on.

The Aught Two probably kept the engine pods where Serenity's hinges are (rather than lowering them to convenient kicking height ). With the thrust vectors that close to the ship's centre of mass, the flight would get unstable from time to time --especially in atmosphere.

The term "extenders" seems to suggest an after-market modification. Move the engines further out to spread out the thrust (and, by extension [no pun intended] the effective "control surface" when you're in vacuum and have to rely on thrust instead of wing surface). The hinges would be a logical addition to prevent the wings starting to deform if the ship's landed (in gravity) for too long.

It'd also have the advantage of keeping potentially hazardous (and very very hot) engine wash that much further away from the hull.

We applied the cortical electrodes but were unable to get a neural reaction from either patient.

All right... now what's a Trace Compression Block Engine? It's mentioned on the site but the link doesn't work.
