In the name of better managing the celestial environment, the Obama administration seems to be on the verge of imposing new international constraints on the American space establishment, without consultation with the Senate. Sources in the arms-control community inform me that, as part of its National Security Space Strategy released a couple months ago, the White House plans to sign an executive order soon that will compel both the U.S. military and commercial space industry to comply with the European Union “ Code of Conduct” for space activities.

I don't think we should have to comply with the EU's standards on anything.

Why? If they have a good set of rules why not use them?

This is very distressing. The EU is not Europe, it has just appointed itself Europe. It's a conquering army. This is basically called surrendering.

I see a difference between using a set of rules because they're good rules and "complying" with someone else's rules. If we like their standards and we want to use them too then that's fine, but the article says "comply" which denotes that we are somehow beholden and if we don't follow said rules then their might be a problem.

DT, I liked the EU until that whole mutual currency thing. Initially the EU, or EEC (ECC?) as it used to be known was beneficial for Ireland, things improved there monitarily etc. So I can't complain about that period. But then the whole Euro dollar thing showed up and that's when I said "okay, I'm done, I don't like this anymore and Ireland should think about jumping off of this bandwagon". It got sort of out of control from that point on in my opinion.

Do you think anyone else should have to comply with OUR rules, though, Riona?

I'm thinking about that one, and I think the answer is no. There are certain types of things that one would think any country would want to do, but I can't force someone to do something just because America does it, nor is it my place to do so. There are things that I agree or disagree with on a universal scale, for instance I believe that men marrying 13 year old girls is wrong, period.I can protest this practice in other countries and lobby for pressure to be put on a government to end it, but I can't force them to do so, as much I would like to it isn't my place, nor is it technically America's place.

I do think though that there are reasons to go in and intervine, like genocide in WWII and other times and places, if they're threatening us etc.

So if, say... China decides that it hasn't seen any danger in using lead-based paint on children's toys, and they don't see why we'd have any gripe about it, it'd be okay for them to send lead-painted toys to our WalMarts? After all, if they don't want to comply with OUR rules, who are we to make them, right?

This is the kind of stuff I'm trying to point out. Things are seldom quite as simple as people hope, or as politicians would have you believe.

DREAMTROVE

Riona,

The EEC is a term coined by Herman Goering as his name for the what he also called "The Fourth Reich" before surrendering to the Allies at the end of WWII. His plan was an economic domination of Europe based in Germany through the use of one currency. The EEC symbol, the Euro, is still on the coin, and used for the money. It's pretty much the successor symbol to the swastika. Joining the one currency is tantamount to surrendering to Germany, who owns the balance of issuing power. The Euro is de facto run from Frankfort Germany, which now controls most of Ireland, through debt. It was an easy trick: Support local politicians who will spend. It's basically what they did in Greece as well.

The overall concept here is "incrementalism" which is a political strategy of not going after the policy you really want, but instead moving just one step at a time in that direction. It's like recent moves by right to lifers to declare a foetus a human being, they are not going for an abortion ban, they know that won't pass, but they do want at least an end to widespread abortion. Completely unrelated topic, but just demonstrating the tactic of incrementalism.

Hello,

You need a better example, Mike. If China routinely shipped poison to us, we'd eventually stop importing their product. It's money, and not rules, that they'd be respecting.

I'm trying to think of political instances of rule imposition on other nations, but I keep coming down to wars.

It's not surrender, just the Nazis reclaiming their space program.

If I had my way we'd be making our own children's toys and not having China do it for us. I don't mind pretty imports, but having them make all of our stuff. Uh uh.
