Got an e-mail about this today and found it interesting:

Google is considering ditching the U.S. Chamber of Commerce out of frustration with its support for legislation that would force Internet companies to police websites that peddle pirated movies and fake Viagra.

The rumblings of a defection — a potentially serious blow to one of Washington’s most powerful lobbies — come weeks after Yahoo left the Chamber in October, largely over its support of Sen. Patrick Leahy’s (D-Vt.) online piracy bill, the PROTECT IP Act.

A source close to Google said the company is “frustrated” about paying dues to an organization promoting legislation that would “impose new liabilities” on Google. A second source close to the company confirmed that thinking.

The Consumer Electronics Association, one of the country’s largest trade groups, is also weighing whether to part ways with the Chamber over its aggressive campaign for the Senate bill and its companion introduced in the House last week, the Stop Online Piracy Act, a tech industry source said.

The bills would require search engines and online ad companies to clamp down on websites that illegally peddle copyrighted movies, fake pharmaceuticals and other counterfeit products if served with a court order by the Justice Department.

CEA and some top Google executives have publicly argued that the bills would threaten innovation and encourage censorship of protected speech on the Web. More at http://www.politico.com/news/stories/1111/67603.html

I'm all for anything that hurts the national Chamber, because of their politics, lobbying power and actions, but I have mixed feelings about the reason. MIXED feelings, mind you, mostly because I don't know enough to form an opinion.

It's a bad law. I understand, and support, efforts to curtail pirating - but this bill won't do it. It would require ISPs to block the address of sites that might make pirating possible (such as a search engine), but only the named address (piratebay.org) and not the numeric address. And, since online pirates tend to be tech savvy - it wont do a thing to stop them, since they actually know where to get that info.

"Goram it kid, let's frak this thing and go home! Engage!"

Ayep, and funny thing about that too - seems these days Chamber of Commerce is practically a term FOR corruption as Ann Arbor and at LEAST five of these podunk townships are in an all-out economic fracas with theirs due to massive corruption as well.

And don't even get me STARTED on DDA's...

Self-appointed, un-elected fuckheads, a lot of em, and untrustworthy as hell.

So I figure the big daddy Chamber of Commerce is just the same BS writ large, and so far I am finding that to be true - we all KNOW this act was in fact penned by vested interests and handed to them for submission, that they didn't even WRITE it, for cryin out loud.
