Fucking Taliban.

Kabul, Afghanistan (CNN) -- More than 120 girls and three teachers were admitted to an Afghanistan hospital Wednesday after being poisoned in their classes with a type of spray, a Takhar provincial official said.

The incident occurred in the provincial capital of Talokhan, in the Bibi Hajera girls school, said Dr. Hafizullah Safi, director of public health for the northern Afghanistan province.

Forty of the 122 girls were still hospitalized, he said, with symptoms including dizziness, vomiting, headaches and loss of consciousness.

Blood samples have been sent to Kabul in an effort to determine the substance used, he said.

"A number of girls from 15 to 18 were brought from a school to hospital today," said hospital director Dr. Habibullah Rostaqi.

"Generally they are not in a critical condition. We are looking after them, but let's see what happens later. We understand so far from the situation ... they are more traumatized."

"The Afghan people know that the terrorists and the Taliban are doing these things to threaten girls and stop them going to school," said Khalilullah Aseer, spokesman for Takhar police. "That's something we and the people believe. Now we are implementing democracy in Afghanistan and we want girls to be educated, but the government's enemies don't want this."

There have been several instances of girls being poisoned in schools in recent years. In April, also in Takhar province, more than 170 women and girls were hospitalized after drinking apparently poisoned well water at a school. Local health officials blamed the acts on extremists opposed to women's education.

The battle indicates broader fears about Afghanistan's future amid the drawdown of U.S. troops in the country.More at http://www.cnn.com/2012/05/23/world/asia/afghanistan-girls-poisoned/in

I know we're not doing much good and I know we have to get out...as soon as possible...but that doesn't mean I don't weep for the Afghans left behind.

You know, we could probably send more than a few people over there to join them, who think somewhat the same about women... (/snark)

Dammit...

Yeah, there's reasons why I been diverting water testing and filtration equipment to RAWA for quite a while now.
The other thing is the effing fundamentalists telling our forces that those schools are "terrorist training camps" - and mind you our guys KNOW this is a lie, but since we're trying to play nicey-nicey with Kharazi and his damn crooks we blow them up anyways to keep the bastards happy, and what does that make us ?

And yes, I too feel that a good chunk of the american right-wings rage at the talitubbies isn't just cause of religious differences, but also jealousy that the talitubbies can get AWAY with the shit that american fundamentalists *WOULD* do the instant the cowardly hypocritical fucks thought they could get away with it - this is especially obvious with them trying to push and rewrite american law into their own fucked up version of shariah.

On top of that it's a personal and theological pet peeve with me in an even-evil-has-standards kind of way, cause bombing schools, libraries or museums is a HUGE no-no with me, cause while I am not altogether happy with the bent that civilization has taken, I sure as hell don't wanna return to barbarism neither - which is essentially what these assholes want.

I still say we strip em naked and pitch em out sans tools and supplies on a desert island somewhere, if they dislike civilization and its limits on their behavior so damn much - see how they like it when all the shit they take for granted, provided by civilized people they hate so much, isn't THERE no more...

Again, the cruelest, meanest thing you can do to anyone is find out their hearts desire, what they really want...
And GIVE IT TO THEM, give it to em good and hard.
Frankly, there's few more deserving of *that* treatment than fundamentalists of any stripe.

Amen sister, Amen.

I pointed this out BEFORE we engaged in that stupidity - other means are not only less destructive overall, they're surprisingly cost-effective and do not feed the cycle of revenge.

So what if the war machine starves, it's nothing but one more threat to us anyways.

Are you opposing the war in general or the strategy.

I note for the record that these girls were poisoned by the guys Obama invited to the table as partners for peace.

These girls are who we should be fighting for, evn if it takes a hundred years and countess lives and treasure.

Murdering dozens of girls isn't even a big deal to them. These girls want a life of meaning and substance, for that they are condemned. It's shocking to us, horrible, unthinkable...for them it's Tuesday. We disagree on so much in this world, Signy, surely we can agree to kill the monsters and save the girls.

Wasted money, not one dime, not one drop of blood wasted until January 20, 2009. The cause was just, it's the ending that needs work.

It's funny to watch "Hero" here try to talk about defending and caring about women and girls, when he belongs to a party that is waging open warfare on women's rights here at home.

So your support for the wars stopped the day a Democrat took the oath of office?

That is really awful. I wish we could find a way to make sure that our efforts over there are helping these sorts of things get better. I know our soldiers like helping the people, everyone I hear from who has been there says that's their favorite thing/the only good thing about being there, helping average people. I wish we were having more of a positive impact as opposed to having issues and misunderstandings.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.

Right on, Sig. The billions of dollars that have gone to corrupt government people in Afghanistan could have been put to SO much better use--there AND here--and we could have been rebuilding the country, instead of continuing to destroy it. I weep for the days before the Russian invasion, when women were coming out of the chadri, going to university, getting professional occupations, etc. The shah was the last person to do anything good in that country; the Russians started the downward/backward slide, and we've only helped it along.

If only Dubya hadn't taken our eyes off Afghanistan for his own reasons starting a new and unnecessary war and we'd continued what we began there, maybe we'd have done a better job. Then again, maybe not...

But what's happening now is, yes, nothing new over there. It will be a very long time before women get even a chance again at what the shah was trying to give them. Their history is too ripe with the old ways, even if the Taliban weren't forcing them back into it. It took the generation that was alive when I was there dying off before things really would have changed, and now it's going back to that. My heart breaks for them, especially knowing we're not helping (hell, our guys have enough of a time just staying ALIVE over there!) and what's coming.

Part of the problems you folks have is perspective.

You are saying that my desire that women pay for their own contraception is the same as the poison and murder of several dozen children because they were learning to read.

By linking the two arguments you've manageged to diminish the importance of both. While I think most American women can probably handle your poor treatment of their minor health concern, It's a terrible disservice to these children. You should be ashamed.

How about we put it back in the box and tag your it: President Obama and Kwicko support an end to the war, therefore supports the murder and enslavement of innocent women and children. My argument is equally offensive, but a far more defensable position then yours.

My support for e war is as strong as ever. It's not politics, it's about killing bad guys and saving girls from being murdered. in fact the day our last soldier leaves I'll support an invasion to liberate and protect all those women.

I support the war, in fact I support more war in Afganistan. Let's declare war on the Taliban, make a commitment of say...however long it takes. In fact Afganistan would be better off if we just quit screwing around and conquered the place. 51st state, let's call it 'Middle Eastern New West Virginia" or Michindiaho or something. Move a baseball team, the Kabul Marlins and Afgani Jaguars football team. Put Afgani State University in th SEC.

Give those women civil rights and guns and make Oprah the first governor.

Bush: Invade Iraq, send as many troops as they needs, stay till the fight is done.

Obama: We're leaving and we'll make sure you know exactly when we are leaving. We're leaving regardless of the conditions on the ground, but its ok because I won (not the Bush-surge strategy).

Bush: Invade Afganistan, send as many troops as we can given other commitments, stay till the fight is done.

Obama: We're losing and you need more troops, think about it for six months, don't meet with commanders during that time, take a poll, send half what they want, long after they're needed, bring them home before they can accomplish their mission, then make sure everybody knows we're bringing everyone home regardless of victory.

Bush: Capture the bad guys so we can get information to find more bad guys and especially THE Bad Guy.

Obama: Kill the bad guys...with drones so we don't have to make hard decisions about waterboarding and learning about new plots. Use Bush's information to kill Bin Ladden...up close and personal making sure to position yourself to take the credit for the gutsy call if successful or to shift blame to some Admiral if failure. Then leak classified information to Hollywood producers so they can make an election year movie about it...even though the leaks have resulted in the poor Pakistani fella that helped us going to prison for and very long time. Then make sure I use the word "I" as much as possible and talk about how dangerous it was for "me" if something went wrong. Award self the Medal of Honor for sitting in my chair aboive and beyond the call of duty.

Bush: Gitmo is a good place for bad people. Sun, sand, watersports...

Obama: Close Gitmo, move everybody to America, take a poll, leave Gitmo open but have trials in New York, take a poll, have trials in Gitmo.

Bush: Do what it takes to kill bad guys and win wars.

Obama: Do what it takes to get reelected and preserve legacy.

As you can see the Bush and Obama administrations have distinct differences.
