Just read this on Buffy.nu. Sounds like some good news.

"On the flip side, good news for fans of "Tru Calling" and "Arrested Development" as both series have begun staffing for the 2004-05 season, a sure sign renewals are around the corner for each. No news yet on the rest of the network’s plans. "

I know Tru Calling wasn't the most liked new show of the season, but I for one liked it and am glad to see it looks like it's coming back.

I never watched Tru Calling last year, but I may have to check an ep or two next year when Jane Espenson joins the staff.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

OBJECTIVEASSESSMENT

From what I've seen of Tru Calling (we're only a few episodes into it in the UK) it seems very formulaic and predictable. I'm pleased for ED that it got renewed but her talents her wasted on that show. It also rankles that this show can get not only a full season but renewed as well while Firefly and Jake 2.0 (still to see Wonderfalls so that may come into this category as well) get cancelled.
However, I've only seen a few eps of TC so I could be very, very wrong and if I am I will eat a virtual hat.

I didn't really have strong feelings one way or the other about Tru Calling this year. One thing I can tell you UK viewers is that it does improve as the season goes on - so, if you like it at all, keep watching - it gets better. In fact, it was getting pretty interesting toward the end of the season, but I had a hard day at work the same day as the two-hour season finale and fell asleep 3/4 through it. So I don't know how it ended!

I watched Tru Calling as fluff entertainment. Then I started to read the recaps on Television Without Pity:

http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/show.cgi?show=120

They pointed out oh so many plot holes and writers' gimmicks which I had willingly ignored. It was hard to watch more episodes without imposing my own running commentary in my head. I stopped watching, and TWoP stopped snarking.

Then they added Jason Priestly to the cast, and I had to tune in to see if it was a desperate attempt at a ratings grab. I found that the writers had put a bit more mystery into the show, and fleshed out the characters more with backstory. It was no longer painful to watch! And then the season ended.

I'll probably give it another shot if it does return in the fall.

I've only watched Tru Calling once or twice, and I've both loved it and been 'meh' about the whole thing, depending on the episode.

However, I saw that Buffy's Jane Epenson is moving to Tru next year as a writer - seems like a good thing, no?

Yes, Jane is mostly a humour oriented writer. Since humour is something currently lacking in the show, that means they are probably going to broaden the scope and tone somewhat. That's a good thing because the scope of the show was pretty narrow right up until the last few episodes.

The main reason I kept following it was because of Eliza as well. Just keep in mind that it does get better as the season goes along.
