Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

Just thought I'd share this with other Browncoats (we have at least that much in common...).

Went to the nursery the other day wearing one of my Serenity t-shirts. A guy who works there said "I love that movie..." and away we go. He's a Browncoat--not involved with others, just loves it "that" much. Says he buys five boxed sets every Xmas, gives 'em out to friends...and voila! Five more Browncoats every December! I sent him here (with appropriate warnings about RWED) and told him about the annual benefit screening, and we yakked a while.

So today, I went looking for some other place to hang out on the internet--this place has gotten to boringly toxic and I've been sick of the "playground" battles for a long time now. Thought I'd look for others who are husky-owned, and found a forum for same. Introduced myself and immediately got five welcomes--it's a reeeely busy site, which is good. I had mentioned I was looking for some place to hang out since I needed a break from the only other site I was on, a Firefly fan site. Second welcome read:
Quote:

Welcome, you'll quickly come to realise this is no ordinary forum.
You get lots of replies.
Lots of info.
Lots of fun
aaaaaaannnnnnnnddddddd. . . .
best of allll. . . .
we're mostly, slightly.. . . just a tad. . .
Nuts about huskies.
( and there are a few Browncoats lurking in here too.
You can't take the sky from me. . .
)

We really, truly ARE everywhere!

You'll probably see less of me, which I know will please some, at least until the election is over and maybe, for my mental health, from now on. It's a damned shame--to me--because there are great people here and the potential for some great discussions/debates (which we have had, don't get me wrong). But I'm pretty sick of the same deliberate stupidity on the part of some, and the willingness to engage in ridiculous battles over the same things again and again, not to mention the personal nastiness. Doesn't mean I won't be around, but I'm gonna make a serious effort to be here a lot less.

Enjoy.

I've also cut way back for the election season, its just not interesting to me to watch everyone go round and round in squircles over the same boring things. I reckon things will get better after election day and the furvur of the results. I'd guess once Dec. 1st comes around things will be a lot more sociable and less toxic around here, that's my plan anyway. I don't blame you for cutting back during this time. But I hope we'll still see lots of you once the election is over, I'd miss you if you weren't here to chat with a chara. Oh, and have lots of fun on your new husky forum, I think you'll really have a good time over there meeting new friends etc. I've been considering finding a faire forum to join, but I haven't done it because I don't really have time for more computer activities at this time. I wish there were more hours in the day.

PK, you're very sweet. I don't think I'd be terribly missed if I completely disappeared, to be honest...and hey, YOU'RE not here that much either, y'know. If some of you "kinder and gentler" voices were around more, I probably would want to be around more, too. C'est la vie.

Riona: "squircles"...I love it...and how appropos!

It's an interesting site, and VERY active (wow!)...and it's global, members from all over the world, many UKers, which I like. Wish I could discuss other things with them, but there's no RWED, which I will definitely miss. There's only so much you can "converse" with about huskies...

And... your point ?

Looked for a pic of Max, btw.. .no such luck. If one does turn up, I'll try to remember to post. Kills me, as there was one where he literally looks as if he's posing for the camera... oh well.

My point was that I enjoy discussing lots of things, and since the site has no RWED, there's really only one topic. Frustrating as this place is, there are at least myriad topics posted (when people can pull away from politics, that is!).

Yes, please DO post them if you can find any pics. The other site has photos--frequently BIG ONES--as signatures for virtually everyone (makes scrolling a chore! ;o) You know how it is with people and their beloved pets? Well, it's worse for husky owners (along with no doubt some other breeds). They're not just "pets", or even "babies" as so many make their pets (guilty as charged). Huskies truly are a breed unto themselves (as I have no doubt numerous other breeds are), and those who love them REEELY love them (you wouldn't have guessed from the way I post, would you?) ;o)

A standing joke (to be found on many t-shirts) is that huskies are like potato chips, you can't stop at just one. I understand the conundrum, I already want a third! They're just so unusual in so many ways, much closer to their wolf forefathers, and have so many unusual mannerisms, are such adept con artists (few things can look as innocent and cute as a husky when he wants to), that they wrap you around their paws pretty effectively. Given all the negatives, there has to be a reason so many love them. You either love them or hate them, there is no in between!

Just went over there because I'd asked if there were any other Browncoats on the forum. In one day, numerous replies (most asking if "Browncoat" meant the color of Tashi's fur). The score so far is three serious Browncoats (one who said "If that's what you mean, count me as one!"), one who could call herself a Browncoat if she wanted to (owns the DVDs and loves it), and two others who loved the show. That's about what I expected, now that I've been one for several years and run into them EVERYWHERE. Just makes me smile.

I love it when my shirts start Firefly lovefest conversations too, its a great icebreaker when meeting new people. Because Firefly appeals to people from every background, its such a wide ranging show that emcompasses so much, people from all lifestyles and experiences seem to identify with Firefly.

Yeah, I get a kick out of it. My t-shirts pretty much fall into two categories: huskies or Serenity. I wish to shit Fox had allowed Firefly t-shirts, 'cuz I'd prefer that over the Serenity ones, but since they didn't, I have Serenity t-shirts in about four colors and wear them often. That's how I meet so many Browncoats, and I always enjoy bumping into them.

Thank you NewOld, you're sweet! At present I'm bouncing between the two--there are actually some interesting threads going on here and not quite as much bickering. And I don't know anyone on the husky forum (at the moment, 127 members on line!), so it'll be a long time before I do.

That said, it's well past time I got off the damned computer, so I'm outta here. Being on two forums is even WORSE when it comes to dragging myself away...sigh... shees.

I have two CSTS shirts from my local browncoat group, we get new ones every year, a sweatshirt that says "Love Keeps Her in the Air When she Oughtta Fall Down, another sweatshirt that says "There are some River's You Don't Want to Cross", a longsleeved T shirt that says "Love Keeps Her in the Air When She Ought to Fall Down" and has Firefly (not Serenity) written in big swirly letters, and I have a shortsleeved shirt that says "I Can Kill You With My Brain". I also have a carved copper bracelet that says Browncoat on it and a box with River standing in that pose with her weapons in front of a sunrise. So yeah, I've got some way cool Firefly stuff to start conversations with. I try to avoid blatent Serenity stuff since I don't prefer the movie and would rather advertise the show, but the CSTS shirts are kind of cool inspite of themselves. Firefly is a big part of my life and it is a part of how I define myself, I'm a Browncoat. Things would fall apart for my understanding of myself if Joss screws up Firefly in future material, so here's hoping it doesn't happen. My career and stuff was so inspired by River and Firefly, I mean I knew I cared about touched folk, was developing my philosophies and conceptualizations related thereto, I knew they interested me, but Firefly helped me cement what I wanted to do professionally and set a lofty future goal for my ambitions in this world. So there's a lot hanging on it for me.

Yeah, it's almost poetical.

Quote NewOldBrownCoat, "We need ya 'round here."

The board doesn't totally need Niki ... nor any of the folks
who come in here to offer an informed, fair & balanced view,
sans zingers.

If the Sane Folk leave, they are the losers should they lose
touch with each other.
As for RWED, doesn't look like it wants
to be fixed.

Myself am mostly a lurker now. Inevitable as I'm pretty apolitical.
(Will the new SockPuppets please stand up!)

I agree, doesn't need me. I all too often get down in the gutter too. For me, it MORE needs the civil people, the ones who can express their opinions without resorting to nastiness. That kinda leaves ROOM for people who want to be here and offer informed, fair and balanced views. Maybe "need" is the wrong word, but shore would improve things.

And yeah, you're right; I know that's part of what keeps me here, not wanting to lose the people I like and/or respect (the two don't always go together, but that's okay by me). Unfortunately, sticking around here doesn't mean I don't lose them... And I'm sad to see you've joined our lurkers, or even semi-lurkers.

I have (yet again) determined to TRY and keep my tone at least semi-civil...again. For me, being reminded helps put me back on track.

I got a thrill the other day: Went to Cafe Press, where I get the majority of my bumper stickers and t-shirts, and noticed they have a "make your own" category! So I made MYSELF a couple of Firefly t-shirts, with those lovely graphics of the whole crew, etc. Can't wait for them to get here!

I like your stuff, Riona. I'm a pushover for "message" stuff. There ARE a few bumperstickers out there with Firefly sayings and I had a couple of those...I especially liked "Tailgaters will be fed to the Reavers".

Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.
