America loves a winner!

Anyone watchin' ?

I happened across it by chance, and was vaguely intrigued.

Now, I'm not much of a Con person, and certainly won't be playing dress up myself. But I do respect the effort and thought which goes into their work.

I'm skeptical , though, that what's being portrayed as real life 'drama' isn't slightly to heavily edited and or scripted to make things look more chaotic than what really takes place.

But then, what reality show doesn't do that ?

America loves a winner!

So, the season has come to a close. Series finale ? Dunno. But I did get sucked into watching every episode.

It's clear that some put more of an investment or have different talents for their costumes. For some, it's almost a form of elitism, where as others seem to be all in for the 'fun' of it. Save for the very dedicated, there does seem to be get a bit blurry at the line of demarcation between 'fun' and entering into actual competition.

I got a bit annoyed, by all cosplayers, at their general attitude though. Whether contrived for the show or not, it seemed , across the board, each was pressed for time, shocked by how much time it took to make their costumes, and THEN were hit with some sort of calamity. ( something wrong w/ the costume, a physical ailment of some sort, ... something )

The Cons , I'm guessing, they aren't sprung on them mere weeks in advance, but from the reaction I see from the cosplayers, you'd think that was the case. If they were SOOO serious about getting something done and having the right prep time for all tha tneeds to be put into a CONTESTANT piece, freakin' pick 4,5, 8 or how many events you want to attend and budget accordingly! Man, it was so annoying to see ( one player in particular ) time and time again, come up w/ an idea that was far too ambitious, only to fail miserably, in some form or another.

By their finished work, and by what they've done before the sseries, it's clear all are generally capable, bright and driven. And yet... it was the same " issues " over and over again.

Forget the girl's name, but she came up w/ the idea to be a 'comic book' hero, by making her outfit almost entirely out of - comic books. Clever. But the skirt she designed just didn't come off too well. It looked to me as if the comic book pages were too stiff, and the skirt stuck out, instead of downward, not covering all that she really hoped to cover. One simple solution I think she could have done was to work the paper, making it softer, and more fabric like. But she scrapped the whole skirt idea, and went w/ a look far more basic and bland, which took away from her original idea greatly.

I don't have any costume making experience, but I wonder if she even thought to at least try something like that. If so, I didn't hear it mentioned.

Just wanted to vent a bit

It's quite the look into the fan subculture, and for that I did find the series interesting. Just not sure how these folks make real life decisions, after seeing some of their antics on here.

Cosplay is the next level of geekery, and anyone who does it well has invested a good amount of time into both their talents and honing their outfits.

That said, there also seems to be ungodly amounts of drama at times. I'm particularly saddened by the whole "try hard" and "fake geek girl" concepts. It's cosplay and geekdom, if you're not trying hard, you're doing something wrong. Also seems to be a serious double standard about whether it's okay for guy geeks to dress up for attention and whether it's okay for girl geeks to dress up for attention.

There aren't exactly a whole lot of girl cosplay options that don't involve catering to some fetish or another simply because of how character design works in the various industries. Calling girls slutty or fake because of that is really cruel.

I also see a lot of fat shaming regardless whether the costume is well made and they look good in it.

I haven't watched this show. Just thinking about things I read on the internet.

I DO love me some bad cosplay too though. The more eyebleeding the better.
