Contrast that with Trumps 'press conference' the following morning.

It wuz hiz standard media manipulation attempt, complete with props, showboating and empty proclamationz, all intended to distract us from the mounting problemz.

For one, brief, shining moment in the farewell speech Obama stopped being polite and started being real: “If every economic issue is framed as a struggle between a hardworking white middle class and undeserving minorities, then workers of all shades will be left fighting for scraps while the wealthy withdraw further into their private enclaves.”

It does not take a genius to understand who is whom in this parable. Donald Trump, who was born rich and lives in a gold-plated tower, is a wealthy person who can withdraw further into his private enclaves. So is his son-in-law and senior advisor Jared Kushner. So is his billionaire education secretary Betsy DeVos. So is his billionaire commerce secretary Wilbur Ross. So is the Goldman Sachs executive he’s tapped to run the National Economic Council and the Goldman Sachs trader turned hedge fund manager he’s tapped to run the Treasury Department. This crew is laughing all the way to the bank as white working class votes install a new regime based on regressive tax cuts and bank deregulation.

I beleev that iz going to be rekugnized az Obama'z big mistake by future historical analysts - too polite. He haz been making excusez for the GoPs from the beginning wen he shoud hav been ripping them to shredz like an angry pitbull.

Hiz stratejy pasified and demotivated hiz supporterz with no similar effect on hiz detractorz. Meanwile, the GoP leaderz were doing everything they coud to fire up their sheepl, no matter how bad for the nation.

We are there now. Been there for decadez.

This iz the beginning uv the next staje.

Give everybody gunz and motivate them to shoot az often az possible. Clear out the surplus humanz by cleverly tricking them into doing the job themselvez.

And thanks to the Democratic Party with its endless emphasis on "identity politics", that's exactly what happened. The only reason why Obama is griping is because the DNCs bet on blacks, women, and Hispanics didn't pay off. Except for that one minor hiccup, he's all for dividing people by race and sex. What a douche.

Okay, I listened and I'm underwhelmed.

"My conversations with you, the American people, in livingrooms and schools ..."

Wait, Obama had extensive conversations with the American people???

Our nation's call to citizenship ... led pioneers to trek west ...." I had to listen to that five times just to figure out WHAT Obama was crediting with all of our shining examples of choosing "freedom over tyranny", the westward trek, the flight to freedom on the Underground railway, the flow of immigrants from the Old World and the New, the sacrifice of our soldiers' lives in Iraq etc. It turns out that, in his speech, it was "the call to citizenship". I can't even figure out how that figures into all of the above. Of course, destitute poverty and the promise of free land* might have had something to do with the mass migrations tho.

Nice-sounding speech but, like most political speeches, 90% bullshit. I have to wonder: Does Obama actually BELIEVE what he's saying???

* natives notwithstanding
