I feel strongly that the worst part of this movie is the title.
Maybe those unfamiliar with Naval terms might find it informative, but I found it terribly bland.
Likely the 2nd worst thing about this movie was the ads, trailers, teasers - at least the ones I saw.
The combination of those 2 should have provided some indication of how good this would be. But I got no idea about what it really would be.

Going in, I thought it would be some lame work like Crimson Tide or K-19.
But for most of the film, I felt like this was Hunt For Red October remake or sequel. It is not, but the facets of production were wonderful, and I think they even did a better job of depicting the 3D spacial action underwater than HFRO did, which is not an easy feat. But subs don't really have viewing Windows or video screens to look outside with.

This is probably a top 10 film of the year. 2nd Billing goes to Oldman, but you can disregard that. Cast was well suited, and I think this was the last film for Michael Nyqvist.

I do recommend this. The title refers to the Subs, but it is much more than just that. The book authors were not Tom Clancy, but the story and action seem like it.

Not quite as all-out frantic as MI:6, but the excitement level was pretty close. One part of the story was well-worn, but overall very good. I think they even got the Time Zones figured out, with night and day (not sure).

I'd give 4.5 or 5 Stars. Not sure how they could have improved.
Oh, wait. They could have swapped out Oldman.

Thanks for the head's up. HFRO is my all time fav sub movie, followed by Crimson Tide. But I think I'll wait for this to come to video.

The marine-centric scenes might hold up on small screen, but I don't think the Special Forces scenes will.

How do they handle the claustrophobia angle, or do they even bother with it at all?

That's probably my biggest fear in life. I wouldn't last 5 minutes underwater on a sub without being thrown in the brig with a straight jacket.

Did you ever see The Descent? I watched that going into it fully blind and even though I was severely disappointed that it turned out to be a crap horror flick in the end, the first half of that movie while they were going through those caves was absolutely terrifying to me and had my pulse rate up. I loved how uncomfortable that movie made me in the first half before they jumped the shark and put the "scary" trope underground mutants in there.

Do Right, Be Right. :)

What claustrophobia?
All of these submarines are in Navies. The crew aboard are sub sailors.
