What does the kid do for a living? These guys, they play video games

They earn thousands sometimes millions playing games where the prize is big and of course another culture gambling bets are high.

A top-tier professional video gamer sometimes pays off as a 'job', travels the world, and can pull in over $4 million annually in tournament winnings. Yen, Dollars, Pounds, Euro ¥ $ $ £ $$ € $ $ ... Brazil coins BRL R$ South Korean WonCurrency, Russian ruble or rouble, Mexican peso, Swiss franc, Indian rupee Bitcoins... Video games ...its all the same corruption?

Prize money in video game tournaments are in the millions of Dollars, the game contests now go across the world of Nintendo, Xbox, Playstation tournaments
that put the “esports” into the area of big corruption and match fixing

I'm not sure what the prize for Japanese games like Mario, or games Tetris and such games were but The prize for StarCraft II was $2.4 million
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive the cash money $22.7 million
The International 2011 tournament offered winnings to group teams, the team in 1st place $1 million, while it only offered $250,000 to those who came in second place, meaning the stakes were raised significantly. In 2011, the title was claimed Natus Vincere, an Eastern European team comprising of five Russian, Estonian and Ukrainian gamers. The LoL (League of Legends) Season 2 World Championship took place in LA. Comprising of 12 teams (60 players in total), the prize pool totalled almost $2 million. The final was watched by over eight million people at the time of broadcast, which made it the most watched eSports final ever at the time. Out of the prize pool, $1 million was awarded to those in first place. The winners were the Taipei Assassins, a five person team hailing from Hong Kong and Taiwan. The Taipei Assassins are known for their highly organised and coordinated gameplay.

In games, match fixing occurs as a match is played to a fake pre-determined result, violating the rules of the game and often the law.

First suspicions of match-fixing in competitive video game StarCraft II came to light on January 20, 2015, when PinnacleSports, an online betting website, released a statement about voiding all bets on the 2015 ProLeague Match-fixing in professional sumo is an allegation that has plagued professional sumo for decades. Due to the amount of money changing hands depending on rank, and prize money, there had been reports of yaocho (corruption, bout-fixing) in professional sumo for years before it was finally definitively proven to exist in 2011. Match fixing has also beenthe act of tampering with the outcome of competition by giving one of the competitors an unfair advantage or disadvantage. The Counter-Strike match fixing scandal was a match fixing scandal involving two professional Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) teams, iBUYPOWER and NetCodeGuides, which resulted in the banning of 4 North American players by Valve after an expository article by esports journalist Richard Lewis. The scandal has been cited as "the first large match fixing scandal" in the CS:GO community.

In organized sports, match fixing occurs as a match is played to a completely or partially pre-determined result, violating the rules of the game and often the law. The most common reason is to obtain a payoff from gamblers, but teams may also intentionally perform poorly to gain a future advantage, such as a better draft pick A or, on paper, a less eminent opponent in a play-off.[ B ] A player might also play poorly to rig a handicap system.

Match fixing, when motivated by gambling, requires contacts (and normally money transfers) between gamblers, players, team officials, and/or referees. These contacts and transfers can sometimes be found, and lead to prosecution by the law or the sports league(s). In contrast, losing for future advantage is internal to the team and very hard to prove.

Match fixing generally refers to fixing the final result of the game. Another form of match fixing, known as spot fixing, involves fixing small events within a match which can be gambled upon, but which are unlikely to prove decisive in determining the final result of the game.

Other names for match fixing include game fixing, race fixing/race manipulation (especially in motorsports), sports fixing, or hippodroming. Games that are deliberately lost are sometimes called thrown games, especially when a team has nothing to play for (aka already qualified to next stage of competition or eliminated). In contrast, when a team intentionally loses a game, or does not score as high as it can, to obtain a perceived future competitive advantage, the team is often said to have tanked the game instead of having thrown it. In pool hustling, tanking is known as dumping. In sports where a handicap or ranking system exists and is capable of being abused (including various racing, grappling, and cue sports, and golf), tanking is known as sandbagging.

Cheating has been going on a lot longer than 2015. Nobody took the medium seriously until recently, so nobody cared.

Some of the OG record holders in early arcade and Atari home games who lived a life making money off of that status were cheats.

Look up a game called Hanboo Hotel and see the amount of straight up financial crime had been going on that site for nearly two decades now. Though you can't trade back any in game currency for real money in the game, there has always been a thriving black market for the in game currency.

My guess is the only reason the government is looking into this now is because it has to do with gambling and they know they should be making money off of it but they haven't figured out how to yet.

Imagine the hypocrisy of a government who will allow businesses to card people to get a job or buy groceries, but won't card people to vote in elections and gives millions of non-citizens free money from taxpayers.
