Kaseya gets master decryption key after July 4 global attack

BOSTON (AP) — The Florida company whose software was exploited in the devastating Fourth of July weekend ransomware attack, Kaseya, has received a universal key that will decrypt all of the more than 1,000 businesses and public organizations crippled in the global incident.

Kaseya spokeswoman Dana Liedholm would not say Thursday how the key was obtained or whether a ransom was paid. She said only that it came from a “trusted third party” and that Kaseya was distributing it to all victims. The cybersecurity firm Emsisoft confirmed that the key worked and was providing support.

The so-called supply-chain attack of Kaseya was the worst ransomware attack to date because it spread through software that companies known as managed service providers use to administer multiple customer networks, delivering software updates and security patches.

President Joe Biden called his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, afterward to press him to stop providing safe haven for cybercriminals whose costly attacks the U.S. government deems a national security threat. He has threatened to make Russia pay a price for failing to crack down, but has not specified what measures the U.S. may take.

P.S. There really aren't very many US code-writers these days.

Most of that shit's been outsourced.

They all have American sounding names while they're punched in though.

It's been a slow and gradual decline for sometime Code is outsourced, your software, your programming, your tech guy it is all outsourced overseas to Brazil, some guy on a keyboard in Vietnam or some Hindu Street Shitter who is jealous of and secretly hates America...even companies on the level of Boeing were doing this shit. The global panedmic and lockdowns might have got some to think different buty do you think biden and Kamala will realy change any of that H-1B is a visa stuff? I guess an amusing one was seeing the HuffHuffpo and Buzzfeed complaining a few years back after they supported more global divcersity in the worldplace only to see their jobs fired and their tech skills placed by some H1B guy, a system that Continues to Displace American Workers...so what can Biden and Komrade Kammy Harris do? The global company brand is going to get rid of that US programmer the second they are done, by any means necessary to save money. The system bought, owned, sold and prostituted and bought again, traitors infesting corporate systems. India has their system set up, trains them in tech caste, hammering code into their head in a region for 6 months, then calls them software engineers and ships them stateside, they arrive California, Florida, Oregon, NewYork. Trump wanted an "America first" yet surrounded himself with globalist swamp creatures and got stabbed in the back? their spouses can work freely in the US, the bigger compnaies will have an offshore office and factory in India and other places because it is less cheap to pay the USA's worker, a thought crime to Hire Americans!??

At the last good job I had, I worked for a few years with "Harry". That's what everybody called him. His actual name was Harish, and that's what I called him.

He was actually are pretty good guy, despite the fact that his job was learning how we did our jobs and making bank in the US so he could go back after 5 years and make peanuts to teach the people in our Chennai branch how we do our jobs.

I got to know him pretty well over the years we worked together, since he was one of the only people on my shift that smoked. He'd talk about how crazy the cost of everything was here, and that even though he was making 10 times as much here than he did back home he was on a tighter budget than he used to be, but it would be worth it because he'd be getting a big pay bump when he got home. He said that you lived like a king over there if you were making $8,000 per year. (This would have been before the housing market crash here in 2008... Not sure if that is still the case or not). He said you could buy a new car there for $5 or $6k. A pack of Marlboros were $0.25 when they weren't on sale.

What was I going to do? Hate the guy for doing his job and learning how to speak English well enough that he was one of the chosen ones to come here and speed along the process of stealing our tech jobs?

Hate the game, not the player.

Our Government sucks all the balls.

Software company's unveiling of decryption key comes too late for many victims of devastating ransomware attack
https://edition.cnn.com/2021/07/23/tech/kaseya-encryptor-ransomware-vi
ctims/index.html

On Thursday, the software company Kaseya announced that it could help unlock any of its customers' systems that were still inaccessible following a devastating ransomware attack early this month that took down as many as 1,500 businesses worldwide. Kaseya had obtained a decryption key, the company said, that could release any file still locked down by malicious software produced by the criminal gang REvil, which is believed to operate from Eastern Europe or Russia.

(T)he announcement ... opens a new chapter of scrutiny for Kaseya as it declines to answer questions about how it obtained the key and whether it paid the $70 million ransom demand or another amount.

(And i)n order to access the tool, Kaseya is requiring that businesses sign a non-disclosure agreement, according to several cybersecurity experts working with affected companies.

... (S)ome companies successfully recovered from the attack on their own.

But for many victims (the announcement) was too little, too late. (They) struggled for weeks to no avail. The problem was compounded when REvil's websites vanished, making it impossible to contact the group to make ransom payments or seek technical assistance. (And though the) announcement this week will likely mean the eventual restoration of these victims' data ... that doesn't change the resources they had to spend ... during the long stretch of time between when the attack occurred and when Kaseya announced a decryptor that the victims did not know was a possibility.

Most firms in (that) position have chosen to eat the costs of recovery rather than pass them along to customers ...

So the software company is coming in for some scrutiny. But I'm guessing what won't be done is an examination of Kaseya's code, to look for vulnerable shortcuts or below-standard work; or, alternatively, OS-based vulnerability.

I also want to point out the mendacity - again - of the m$m. While the original story didn't claim RUSSIA!!! RUSSIA!!! RUSSIA!!! was to blame, the only country mentioned was RUSSIA!!! RUSSIA!!! RUSSIA!!!, in an obvious attempt to propagandize us, instead of providing complete - yanno - NEWS. But now Eastern Europe (no country mentioned by name, and presumably meaning we should think 'former Soviet bloc') is being hauled up as an assumed target for our hostilities.

They think we're cattle.

I won't even bother explaining why to anybody who doesn't get that.
