Chris Murphy on Saudi Arabia: 'There's got to be consequences'

The United States should "rethink" arms sales to Saudi Arabia, following the kingdom's support for Russia in the war against Ukraine, Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) said Sunday.

"For years, we’ve looked the other way as Saudi Arabia has chopped up journalists, has engaged in massive political oppression, for one reason: We wanted to know that when the chips were down ... the Saudis would choose us instead of Russia," Murphy said on ABC's "This Week." "Well, they didn't."

He added, "There's gotta be consequences for that."

Murphy's comments followed a decision announced last week by OPEC+ countries, including Saudi Arabia, to cut production by 2 million barrels of oil per day starting next month. That move is seen as favoring Russia, which is largely using its income from oil production to fuel the war against Ukraine.

The United States could restrict arms sales, reconsider the OPEC+ oil cartel's immunity from lawsuits, or rethink its troop presence and security relationship in Saudi Arabia, Murphy said.

"I think it’s time to admit the Saudis are not looking out for us," he said.

Democratic fucks like Murphy pretended that none of that shit was happening until just right now.

Because of this...

...and how it hurts Democrats even more than they've hurt themselves.

Translation: "We don't care how horrific and barbaric the Saudi Royal Family is, as long as they look out for OUR interests."

But why should the Saudis, or any nation, look out for OUR interests? Looking out for OUR interests is the job of the USA President, is it not? And part of our President's job is to negotiate deals with other nations that take into account the interests of both nations, not imposed by our military, and therefore won't be wriggled out of as soon as our military is distracted.

BTW, the Saudis had a pretty even-handed deal with us, but we broke our end of the bargain by a) not being able to protect their refineries from attack by Iran and b) weaponizing and over-printing the petrodollar, which made their dollar reserves less secure and less valuable.

I love how low-info/low-intelligence Democrats like Ted are all of the sudden against Saudi Arabia.

You couldn't possibly get any easier to lead around by the nose than our resident dipshit, can you?

I wouldn't be surprised if 911 was a joint project between Mossad and America's PNAC neocons, with Saudis as patsies.

It's true the Saudis funded ISIS. OTOH we also funded, trained and armed jihadi fundamentalists in Afghanistan (mujahideen, "freedom fighters") and in Chechnya ("separatists") and Syria ("moderate rebels") and Libya ("freedom fighters").

You're confused about good guys and bad guys.

And at the risk of repeating myself:

The reality of spending $500 billion to build a city in the desert is starting to hit home for Saudi officials

Saudi Arabia's vision for its sprawling Neom project has always been hugely ambitious — and costly.

The financial realities have started to cause concern within the government, Bloomberg reported.

Amid alarm about costs, the kingdom's sovereign wealth fund has yet to approve Neom's 2024 budget.

Saudi Arabia's plan for its $500 billion futuristic city, Neom, is as ambitious as it gets.

Saudi Arabia Scales Back On $500 Billion Neom Project Amid Financial Concerns

Originally envisioned as a sprawling city contained within mirrored skyscrapers stretching 170 km along the coast, The Line's projected completion by 2030 has been scaled back drastically. With expectations now reduced to completing just 2.4 km of the project by the same deadline, at least one contractor has begun dismissing workers.
