Quote:Nine times out of ten, you should be skeptical that the fall of a bad guy means that the people who ousted him are the good guys. The world rarely works that way, which is why I am more than a little confused by the celebration of the fall of the Assad regime in Syria.

Because you think engineering an al Qaeda takeover of Syria is a SUCCESS... then you're either STOOPID or evil. But, we all knew that. ***** Quote: 'Al Qaeda Is on Our Side’: How Obama-Biden team empowered terrorists in Syria Aaron Maté, 2/20/2022 Jake Sullivan: "AQ [al Qaeda] is on our side in Syria" https://www.clintonfoundationtimeline.com/february-12-2012-an-email-from-jake-sullivan-to-hillary-al-qaeda-is-on-our-side-in-syria/ BTW, if you review Russia's and Iran's actions in Syria back when ISIS was in the process of taking it over, and since, what you'll see is that they were fighting terrorists, not supporting Assad. For example, they did nothing to stop Israel from bombing Syria. I found this very fine parsing of military support puzzling, but apparently neither Russia nor Iran were "all in" on Assad. Seems they were ready tonlet Assad succeed or fail on his own.

Quote:Originally posted by THG: This belongs in every thread so it shows up whenever someone pulls up a thread concerning this topic. Russia's and Iran's big Middle East fail. Israel answers the butchers who attacked it. What's the score so far? Well, let's see. Syria fell, why? Israel destroyed Hezbollah and Hamas. Literally, Isreal destroyed Hezbollah and Hamas. Isreal showed Iran It can blow its missiles out of the sky. That Israeli F-35's can take out any target in Iran they want, whenever they want, almost with impunity. With Iran losing its proxies, Hezbollah and Hamas, i.e. its disruptors in the region, they've lost their bid to be the dominant force in the Middle East. That's over for them. Who's the biggest loser? Russia Russia Russia. Putin jumped into helping Assad to gain influence in that part of the world. And, to stop a pipeline running through Syria undercutting its oil dominance of Europe. Russia's sphere of influence in the Middle East is over, puff, gone. They too are collapsing. The world is changing causing a dramatic power shift. Authoritarian regimes are dropping like flies, i.e. Türkiye and China aren't fairing much better. Brics, Putins' small sphere of influence is now short on appeal. Those countries are going to quickly rethink their choice to align with Putins' Russia. They can see it is soon to be a failed state. That's not to say those who control much of Syria are the good guys. The Kurds and most of the Syria people are, but not so much anyone else. We need to hope for the best, while helping to shape things when it is in our interest to do so. Poor comrade signym. Her world is falling apart as well. All her posts were shown to be bullshit in this and other threads. Years of telling us here how Russia controls the Black Sea and is such a fighting force. For her too, that is over. The satisfaction that it brings, the vindication, makes it well worth the wait. Too funny... T

I assure you, THUGR, I barely give you any thought. The fall of Syria is a tragedy for the people of Syria. As I'm learning more, it appears that Assad fucked up. He trusted his newfound Arab buddies/ western leaning ME monarchies ... Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan et al ... to keep Syria safe. He REALLY should have taken Kissinger's statement to heart (read below).

It seems to me that a more legitimate accusation would be that Assad's army was targeting civilians. At one time, I did try to estimate the number if civilians killed from the numbers available. A widely quoted figure was that 200,000 people were killed. But half of those were combatants, and half of the civilians that were killed were killed by ISIS/ al Qaeda. But that was very early on. I'm going to look into that again.
