QUICKSAND

I started the opposing thread to this back in July, cuz I was bored, and it's now November, and it WON'T DIE!!! 152 replies and counting, Gee Whiz......

Let's show we're not negative people and talk about the GOOD Sci-Fi in the world. And yes, obviously, "Firefly" is at the top of the list. What else ya got?

I can point out a few books my own self, but movie-wise I want to toss up "Metropolis" (the silent 1929 movie), with a side of "2001" and polish it off with "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" for dessert. I mean, did it ever get any better than this?

Oh, and I'm apparently also King Nerd.

Quicksand, I haven't the slightest notion who/what you are, but my respect for you has increased by an order of magnitude or two.

Metropolis: also my choice as number one.

Heavy political message... uh, whatever. I work in the flim biz, get access to hunnerds of free posters. Ain't got a one on my walls but for a dearly bought Metropolis, the helmeted girl with green shaded skin, bright red lips, the whole humanity eroded by roboticism motif.... Ah, none of it means a damn thing, eh? Bring on the space westerns.

Some of my favs in no particular order:

Star Wars Trillogy(new ones waste of film)
Aliens(lost count how many times I've seen this)
Matrix(and I even liked the other two o.k.)
Wrath of Kahn("No...you can't get away." love it)

as for tv...

Farscape(just loved the concept)
Space: Above and Beyond(had a good visceral feel)
Firefly(of course)

There are others, but these are my favs.

Doesn't mean it can't be done again!

Here's to positive thinking. I like the first two Terminator movies. They hurt my brain with time travel conundrums, all while entertaining me with violence. But not that last one. That was a piece of complete crapola.

Babylon 5 gets a mention, of course.

A few years ago, I would have said Stargate SG-1, but it's stagnated to the point where I can't say that anymore.

Firefly, duh.

And, a newcomer to the list:

Battlestar Galactica 2004 rocks so far.

Galaxy Quest ranks right up there for me hehe :)

It takes all the bad sci-fi and mocks it in one fell swoop.

Speaking of parody, I want to kind of flail Shaun of the Dead onto the list.

I know it's not, like, EXACTLY Sci-Fi, but what the hell. It'd make a good double-feature with Galaxy Quest.

Babylon 5, Blake's 7 and Red Dwarf I'd rate the highest for watchable sci-fi. As far as the readable stuff goes, I can never go past Philip K Dick's writing.

Although, "Brimstone" was not specifically sci-fi, I really dug the concept and loved Glover's portrayal of 'Asmodeus, Beelzebub, Father of Lies, The Dark Prince...the Devil you ninnies!' Not to mention the show was just getting really good when they canned it.

Re: Brimstone. Gee, that sounds like a familiar story. Wasn't that show originally aired on Fox?

In response to the previous note, the directors cut of "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was quite superior. It seems a shame to leave that off the list, but include "The Search for Spock." Eh.

WORDSMITH

Best SciFi Ever:

TV Based
(1) Sapphire and Steel (David McCallum and Joannah Lumley) - creepy time travel / supernatural chiller series.

(2) Firefly - obviously.

(3) Babylon 5 - equally obviously.

(4) Doctor Who - not for the sets (which were a running joke) but for the variety of story styles attempted and managed.

(5) UFO - inventive, daring and Gerry Anderson's vehicles.

Film based
(1) Metropolis - agree with all the comments above.

(2) Star Trek: First Contact - Entertaining, not too many plot holes, and stunning visual effects which helped to tell the story rather than existing for their own sake.

(3) Star Wars: A New Hope - makes you wonder why Lucas bothered trying to fill in the back story.

(4) Bicentennial Man - not the same as the book, but Robin Williams made this one watchable as a story in it's own right.

Book Based:
(1) Vorkosigan set by Lois McMaster Bujold.

(2) Honor Harrington set by David Weber.

(3) Dragon's Egg by Robert L. Forward.
