I cannot believe this. I loved xXx with Vin Diesel. The acting wasn't that great but it was a good action movie. Now they've released a sequel and it stars Ice Cube instead of Vin Diesel. I hate it when they do that. They did it with 2 Fast 2 Furious and that wasn't as good and now this.

I'll sew your skin into my clothes.

NEEDLESEYE

I just read an interview, can't remember the site now, but V. said that he had to choose between all his various sequels and made a choice. Just couldn't do them all. I guess theres not enough Diesel to go around. Even if his acting isn't the best, seems theres a sequel to all his major films.

He does have a bit of presence about him.

I really dislike when a major film character is replaced or substituted with someone else. It's kinda hokey. Do the film execs think we won't notice?
Sorta like Jack played by whatshername in Chronicles of Riddick, that dissapointed me.

Near as I could figure. . .

XXX went from being the callsign of a single agent, and became the callsign of the "project" that takes 'last chance losers' like Xander Cage was in the first movie and turns them into blunt instruments for the cause of King and Country.

So it's not a matter of us 'not noticing' that it's a different star, because it's a different character entirely.

No, Vin is not the best actor out there, but I really like the way he plays his characters. I was looking forward to seeing him in a sequel, but at the same time, I'm pleasantly surprised at Ice Cube's ability to play someone besides the guy from "Friday". He's shaping up to be a halfway decent action hero. I think he'll do okay.

Semi-related note: Ice Cube is not the only rapper-turned-actor who's tapped into hidden talents. Ice-T's character on "Law and Order: SVU" is very compelling and powerful.

QUICKSAND

Okay, there's "cheating" -- creating a new story with a new character, but keeping the franchise alive..... and then there's just the all-out Diss, a la Darren on Bewitched or April O'Neil in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles I & II (those movies ROCKED, shut up!)

A rare third category would be "To Continue the Longevity," like with James Bond, but that doesn't count. If Tom Cruise gets so old they have to find a new Ethan Hunt for Mission: Impossible 7, I'll eat Jayne's hat.

Anyway, "XXX2: State of the Union" falls into first category, even retaining Samuel L. Jackson as the Head Honcho. This is in keeping with the original concept, unlike 2 Fast 2 Furious which just followed around Brian Spilner, and who the fork wants to see a movie about Brian Spilner? Insert Chinese Swearing Here.

There is a Bond tie-in, though: "XXX2" is directed by Lee Tamahori, who directed Die Another Day.

It could be a decent dumb-action movie, but it could also easily be one of those that opens on a weekend with something infinitely more interesting, and gets missed. It's not like we're all twitching for the next Ice Cube vehicle. (Torque 2, anyone?).

Ummm, oh yeah, the new girl in "Riddick" played the electric chick on "Angel," so we're not allowed to root against her.

Meanwhile, Diesel is playing an FBI-agent sent to protect children in suburbia, in "The Pacifier." So at this point Ice Cube has more stock than Diesel. Who knew?

I enjoyed Chronicles of Riddick. I suppose xXx2 could be worse. There are worse actors out there. I quite liked Torque as well. It was better than 2 Fast 2 Furious.
