I'm a bit leery of a "Christmas Special" but I suppose the more Doctor Who the better. As long as the Doctor doesn't have a Christmasy adventure at the North Pole.

But it's great news that the show gets renewed after only one episode has aired, it's wonderful statement of support. We haven't seen that kind of support of a Sci-fi show in a long time. Go BBC!

Unfortunately, Christopher Eccleston has announced that he will only return for the Christmas special, and not another series. They are looking to cast another Doctor right now....

Haven't yet seen the new one (airs here Tuesday), but I'm pleased it's done so well and the Who legacy can continue...

But man, they're running out of regenerations.

My thought exactly, they only have 12 doctors and if we use up one a season it's going to be a short revival. I'm suppose the writers could change the rules, the Master has already gone beyond 12 reincarnations I think.

Mostly thought, I'm sads that we're already discussing who will play the 10th doctor when we haven't even seen more than 1 episode of the 9th doctor yet. I blame the tabloids for breaking this news too soon. I'm sure the 13 episodes will be good, but I'm used to my actors staying around for more than a season.

It's as if (in alternate reality) Firefly got renewed for a second season, and then Mal said he wouldn't come back? Don't get us all excited about a new actor playing the Doctor and then tell us a week later that he's leaving and we should starting getting excited for another new actor.

Not only could, but should. I think Eccleston's decision is right and brave. There is no reason the character of the Doctor can't evolve continuously - this is SciFi, not a soap-opera about a District Nurse. OTOH I would have wanted Serenity to be re-crewed for each season of Firefly, so I'm probably in a minority again.

Well, obviously I'm sad about CE not returning as the Doctor but as has been said, the show has always been bigger than any cast member or producer. Someone mentioned the example of what if Firefly had returned without Mal. Well, NYPD Blue came back without its big breakthrough lead (David Caruso for those with short memories) and managed to get by for another ten seasons or so.

So, in conclusion, a second series is good, it being without CE is bad, a Christmas special is good, the timing of the news is bad, Richard Basehart is good.

Isn't it 13 doctors, their first incarnation followed by 12 regenerations?

I'm not sure it's the same thing, with the Mal-less Firefly scenario I mean.

I think FF was about the ensemble more than anything, and though Mal is an important part of the dynamic I don't think it would kill the Big Damn Heroes.

Whereas in Doctor Who much of the focus is on... well, you know. Which is why the news of Eccy's early departure worries me a tad. How will the audience react at having to make such an adjustment so soon?

For the record, I could have sworn Paul McGann's VO in the TV movie stated a Time Lord has thirteen "lives"...
