Kaylee:

I was outside our bunk, Simon was locked inside. He had been locked inside since he snapped out of his crazy trance he was in. I shuddered at the thought of what he almost did. I knew I was gonna have some nasty bruises and I was already starting to swell up. Inara tried to coax me away from the hatch with a special sweet brew of one of her teas, but I was so afraid to leave Simon alone I told her to bring the cup to me.

“Kaylee, I know you love him, but he’s dangerous right now, we don’t know what he’s capable of,” Inara said putting her arm around me. I shook my head.

“You stood by Mal, when we all were scared about him running after the New Browncoats, so of all people on this ship I expect you to be on my side,” I said, my voice was horse and squeaky, but it didn’t matter. I loved Simon, and I knew he wasn’t himself. The Simon I know would never harm me. I told Inara and she took out the round little compact mirror, she used when she wanted to check her lipstick. She showed me the bruises around my neck. They were already starting to turn from red to black and blue.

“He’s already hurt you Kaylee,” Inara sighed.

“He’s lost everyone’s trust, Nara, I won’t let him lose mine,” I said and she shook her head in defeat.

“I’ll bring you that tea,” she smiled and I tried to grin back and grimaced when I swallowed. I watched as Inara left me alone. I sat on the floor of the corridor.

“No matter what Simon, I still love you,” I whispered with my eyes closed.

“You should leave Kaylee,” I heard him say from behind the hatch.

“Never,” I squeaked painfully.

“I need you to stay away, Kaylee… I’m not safe,” he said and I closed my eyes. I could barely feel the tears that were falling from my eyes.

“I forgive you, Simon, you don’t need to hide from me…open up I want to see you,” I pleaded.

“I can’t look at you Kaylee, I hate myself for what I did to you,” his voice was thick with tears. “I don’t know what they did to me…I don’t know how to stop it.” he cried and all I wanted to do was to hold him.

“River said she knew,” I told him. “She even knew the safe word to stop you! I know what the safe word is so I can stop you if you try to hurt me!”

“You can barely talk, bao bei,” he protested.

“Let me in Simon, you need me,” I said and I could feel him nodding on the other side of the hatch. He opened it after a few minutes of contemplation. I went inside and found him standing in the middle of the room. I went to him and wrapped my arms around his waist.

“No matter what Simon, I love you, never forget that, ever,” I said and I felt his tears hit my forehead.

“I love you so much Kaylee,” he whispered. He was shaking with emotion.

“It’s okay,” I chanted and held him close. “It’s okay.”

Mal:

“This is not okay.” I said to Inara and Zoe pacing the common area like a mad man. “Simon’s our doctor for Ye Soo’s sake, what hell is the reason he’s going all bat shit crazy?”

Inara and Zoe wisely remained quiet letting me rant, they were almost done with cleaning up the mess the fight between my merc and my doctor made of the common area. They both had filled me in on that happening five minutes ago after I came in from the cargo bay. I was down there setting some simple ground rules for our six new passengers and a part of me wished I was still down there and not dealing with this go se.

River had managed to sneak behind me, “I will tell you all what you need to know, I want to get Simon first,” she said, going towards the bunks.

“He goes out of line and stops responding to that safe word of yours, I won’t hesitate to shoot him, dong ma?” I yelled after her and she nodded.

Five minutes later, River returned with a very downcast Simon. Kaylee was next to him hold his hand and I nearly lost my calm when I saw what he did to her neck. I thanked Book’s God that Jayne intervened or I’d definitely would have lost my little sister and the verse’s best mechanic. I glared at Simon who refused to look me in the eye. Inara grabbed my hand as she sat at the table I slowly sat down with her.

River stood up in front of us, “I apologize for Simon’s behavior,” she began and I stopped her:

“He needs to do the apologizing not you,” I said and Simon put his hands on his head and sighed.

“I am truly sorry for all of this,” he said looking at all of us and I grunted. “I never expected for this to happen, I swear,” he said and I shook my head in disgust.

“Enough speaking from you! River,” I prodded her to continue and Simon put his head back down on the table with a forlorn sigh. Kaylee rubbed his back. We were going to have to discuss their living arrangement after all this.

“Simon began picking up people’s thoughts on the way to Persephone, the closer we became to the planet the more thoughts he heard,” she began.

“So Simon is a reader,” Inara said and River nodded.

“He’s a reader like me and his powers were blocked by the Blue Hands. I felt their presence in his mind,” I said. “Simon is a part of a Alliance sponsored project, Project Ares. He was their first prototype.”

“Prototype?” both Kaylee and Simon said at the same time.

“You are the alpha prototype of Project Ares, Simon,” she took his hand.

“How do you know this?” Simon asked her before I could.

“I didn’t at first,” she said. “The man you brought in on the stretcher told me. I had went into his mind while Zoe and Mal were on Persephone,” she said. “When I tried to read him he sent me a bunch of images. I collapsed from the sheer quantity of information he was trying to give me. He whispered something to me. Project Ares. I believe he’s Ares 16. The 16th try by the Alliance, at making the perfect genetic weapon.”

“So, I don’t only have one weapon on my boat, I have three? Wo de ma,” I looked at Inara suddenly worried. Serenity was no place for her to be having our baby. I looked slowly back over to Simon who was pale as a ghost, and then River who was nervously playing with the bottom of her dress.

“I’ll leave,” Simon stood up and Kaylee pulled him down. Frantically looking at me with those big brown eyes. I closed my eyes and ran my hands over my face.

“Shut up, Doc. I ain’t tossin you off this boat… yet. We need to know what the hell is going on in that head of yours, though,” I sighed. “River?” I asked and she looked nervously at Simon.

“No,” Simon stood up and said, angrily before she could open her mouth to speak. As they glared at each other, I surmised they were doing some mind chatting we weren’t privy to.

“He’s the only one who would know the full story, Simon,” River finally pleaded.

“He’s the one who sold you to the Alliance!” He yelled. “And now this, go se, is happening to me! He did this to us, River, and you want to run to him of all people for help!”

“You want to contact your father?’ Zoe asked River and River nodded.

“I don’t want to contact him, I want to help Simon and he’s the only one who can piece this all together. He can tell us why Simon’s powers are suddenly coming back on and he can tell us why the walls that were constructed in his mind are failing now,” she explained.

“What about the kid in the stretcher?” I asked and River shook her head.

“Jared only knows bits and pieces of what was done to him and the others after Simon’s project failed. The one thing he knows for sure is that was that Project Ares 1 was failure,” River closed her eyes concentrating. I suspected she was talking to our little comatose friend down in the cargo bay.

“Why was it… was I a failure?” Simon asked, curiously.

River said nothing she just stood there with her eyes closed. Her eyelids fluttering. I wondered what she was begin shown.

River:

Blood, everywhere, red. It was all red. Simon…Simon as a little boy, no Simon as something else. Something terrible. Blue. Hands of blue. The pictures flashed through my mind. I couldn’t slow them down. I couldn’t stop them.

“Project Ares 1, is a failure,” I heard a man speaking.

“Kill the boy,” another voice. “Kill him.”

One little boy shot in the brainpan, blood splashed the wall little boy falls down. They all fall down. Ares 2, 3,4,5,6… Another failure. Another bullet to the brain pan…7,8,9,10. Ares 11 asks for his mommy. Bang! Blood on the walls. 12,13,14,15, blood splatters…no more boys just death. All in the same room. The stone room…with the drain and the steel door.

“Stop,” I cried out. “Stop, Jared! Stop showing me those things!” I cried. I could vaguely feel Simon cradling me in his arms. I must’ve collapsed, but I couldn’t unlink my mind from Jared’s. He was holding me with him, begging me to hear his story.

I saw a little three year old boy with curly blonde hair and big green eyes being taken from his hysterical mother. Then I saw his mother being slapped away as she clung to her child. She was pregnant. Alliance soldiers throw her to the floor. She curls into a ball to protect her unborn child as she cries for her toddler son.

“He’s no longer yours,” A soldier says and kicks her. She screams. The little boy cries out, screaming for his mother over and over. My heart broke for him.

The scene changed again. I saw the little boy. He was older now around six years old. He’s being tested, tortured, beat. His arms are bruised from multiple blood test. His hands are black and blue from banging on steel doors. That only open to give him more pain.

“He’s a success,” I heard a voice.

“What changed? Why now? Why after all the other little boys? I want to know why he’s special!”

“Yes sir.”

Suddenly I was seeing through his eyes, he was strapped down at an examination table. My heart was racing, I remembered my own experience… at the Academy, being strapped down like an animal. I looked down at my bindings. I realized looking down at my body, that it was his body. Jared had to be ten or eleven now. I watched as two doctor’s talked.

Listen, Jared whispered.

“It’s the mother, sir. The mother is the reason why he’s special. The mother’s brainwave patterns are twice as active as a normal human females. Such patterns can mean that she can have a range of different extraordinary abilities. These…abilities have been past down along with the genetic manipulation of the Project.”

“Just like Ares 1, but unlike Ares 1… this child… he is in control,” the older doctor said.

“No, he’s nothing like Ares 1, he’s no way near that power.”

“What is power without control?” the older doctor said.

“You may be right about that, old friend, but remember it will take years for Ares 16 to come close to what Ares 1 did on the Space Station 623-64 at the age of two. What is a weapon that doesn’t effectively kill its target?”

“Not much of a weapon…I see your point. Is there any way to effectively speed up his progress?”

“There are ways…”

“Then do them…” the older doctor order.

“They’re dangerous, sir, we might lose the subjects cognitive abilities.”

“Do what needs to be done, we need results ASAP!”

“Yes sir,” the younger doctor said. And then he placed electrodes on Jared head. I knew this procedure well.

“I’m sorry, son,” he said, going over to the shock machine.

“Please,” I whispered mentally begging him not to let me relive that particular torture.

Talk to Jeremy…, He whispered then released me and I gasped awake.

“Thank God,” I heard Simon say above me.

“We need to… talk…Jeremy,” I whispered and then everything went black.

I'm not much of a Zayne fan, but I like the other little plot twists you've added here with Simon and the new gens of Browncoats.

...oh and the conflicts between the crew
and Jayne saying he wasn't Wash...and of course Mal's determination to protect his growing family...good stuff

Certainly makes you wonder if Simon did have something wonky done to him when he was little, since River's got freaky powers of her own that appear to be genetically-related:(

Spectacular work here, Nailani:D

Ok if you didn't know I'm kinda hooked. This has taken an interesting turn with this whole project Ares. But I'm kinda missing the Zoe-Jayne storyline.
