Furcation

-----------------

Her father was a quiet man.

Quiet and steady.

Quiet in a dead way.

Took a joke well.

He had traveled the world...

... in the galley kitchen.

Present, absent, beloved, irrelevant.

Her mama ruled with a velvet fist.

She was born deaf and independently wealthy.

The first thing she learned...

...was watching her face. The first thing she said...

...was "Yes, ma'am."

The first thing you learn when you live in the jungle...

...is that family and duty...

...and core and veneer...

...and love and sacrifice...

...and beauty and truth...

...and watching and wisdom...

...and word and sign...

... are exactly the same.

...can diverge quite profoundly.

A woman's strength, my dear, is in her iron spine.

That and her hips, sweetness. And her heart.

Nothing is as capable and reliable as her own two hands.

Which can be taken metaphorically, of course.

What you lean on is what you know.

What you know is what your mind can...

...tear from the 'verse or have it torn from you with all the might of a roaring...

...loving, forgiving, liberating Buddha. You are an ocean.

You are too vast to be swallowed up by one abysmal hell.

The journey's first step might be the one over the edge...

...and some point, saying "yes" is even harder than the other thing.

You took yourself here, you'll take yourself further.

And don't forget when you pass one another...

... to nod in greeting.

Quiet aknowledgment.

Quiet in a good way.

"Her mama ruled with a velvet fist.

She was born deaf and independently wealthy." daniel clowes!

"A woman's strength, my dear, is in her iron spine." such a fantastic line:)

the BSR is really missing this kind of experimentation...
