There was a capture their mother had once, of River. In it, she is dancing in a sunbeam, twirling on her toes, her dress a flower, her hair a parasol, and she is laughing. Her face is so lit up with sun, it’s though the light comes from within her, and not from around her, like she’s creating it.

It used to stand on their mother’s desk; Simon must have seen it every single day, growing up. He couldn’t excise it from his heart if he tried. And he has tried.

For he knows he’ll never see that girl again.

I totally wanna say this is the essence of Simon, but I don't think that's fair to him really. He wants to have the old River back - the unmarred and untraumatized teenage super genius - but he knows that things can't be changed. That and who knows what River would have been by the time she reached her current canonical age if she hadn't ended up at the Academy.

This drabble really catches Simon's struggles well, NancyBrooke, through the vivid imagery of River's happiness being something Simon SHOULDN'T want to forget but has to in a way to keep his sanity relating to River and what supposed colleagues did to her in the name of "a better world."
