Slated for a 2006 release, Unholy will star Nicholas Brendan and Adrienne Barbeau as, well... I wish I could say more, but it seems the Department of Defense has put a Cease and Desist on the movie's official website.

Our government doesn't want this movie to be shown, so naturally, we must see it! (It's our duty as free citizens!) (And because it has Nicky in it)

(Before people start thinkin' I've got some kinda brain injury, I'd just like to say that, yes, I know it's a publicity stunt, but hot damn, if it's not a good one, I don't know what is)

I thought "cease and desist" was a phrase reserved for second rate Victorian melodrama. You poor people really are living under Big Brother are'nt you?

I would be more intrigued by this movie if there wasn't a complete plot summary on IMDb. Still - it sounds like a cool movie that I would see even if Nicholas Brendon wasn't in it.

Hmmm... love horror films. Hope it's a good one.
The D of D thing on the site looks like a stunt to me too. Excellent!

It's legalspeak, the document issued is actually identified by a string of numbers or some such (Form 34-A, section 14, subsection 3-C, etc, ad infinitum). It's usually referred to as "A cease-and-desist order" just for ease of understanding. It basically translates to "stop" (cease) and "never do this again" (desist). A "Stop order" or a "Don't-do-that order" just don't have the same ring of formal legal authority being brought to bear.

They're issued all the time in fandoms, since technically, most of what fandoms do is "illegal" (taking other peoples' work and altering it). This is why fanfics have to have that disclaimer about how the writer doesn't own any part of these characters or universe, all rights belong to Whatever Inc. Some fandoms are, obviously, worse than others. We have the advantage that Joss is both a fan himself, and just plain good people, but there are still things that Joss can't be seen taking too close a look at (lest he be forced to shut it down in order to defend copyrights [to make an example of it, lest other corporations who are not fans try to steal Joss's intellectual property and point to the fandom as precedent]).

Star Wars (the words "Star Wars" and all subject matter relating to them are the sole property of LucasEmpire, used here without permission and for no profit, please don't sue me, Lord Lucas, as I grovel at thine feet) fans have it particularly tough; the LucasLawyers are prone to attacking people caught whistling the Star Wars theme as they walk down the sidewalk.

Hmmm...
I'm pretty sure that the Oxford English Dictionary has the copywrite on the words "Cease" and "Desist". I shall be contacting the U.S. government to inform them of their mistake forthwith.
(Actually, I'm joking. Please dont sue me).
