I work in retail near two major colleges, and the amount of knuckle-headedness is astounding.
At eight o'clock when our pharmacy closes, people come up to me and ask, "Can you open it up for me?"
Professors leave their important class notes on the counter when they leave.
Customers frequently leave their credit cards behind after swiping them.
The computer programs we're using seem like they were written by monkeys, always changing, never better than before.
Obese folk buy tons of cheetoes and snickers...AND a diet Coke.

And away from work,
On the road, I always have someone in front of me doing 13.5 MPH, and someone behind me waiting to do 60 in a 30 zone.
At least 30% of America thinks GW is doing a swell job.
When I call my cable provider (or almost any other company), the menu is clear, the music is clear, then the live person is barely audible AND has a thick accent.
Blade Runner: Special Edition STILL isn't available.

Do I live on a Hellmouth, and am just not making that connection?
Does anyone else see a lack of smarts swirling around them?

Or am I alone here Chrisisall

I make a lot of really stupid mistakes like that. Sorry I'd probably bug the hell out of you but I'll let you in on my little annoyances. I work for an internet provider however that does not make me a computer technician. I write the damn number for tech support on the fracking box point it out and even write the numbers again so that folks don't even have to figure out where the letters are on the buttons of their phones. But still I get calls as to how do I...... what does this mean? Plug the box into the wall and then into your computer or router! How fraking hard is that. Oh and make sure your computer isn't trying to dial a connection. What makes people think that I will go to their house on a satuday night at 10 pm and fix their damn computer for them... for free?

A customer comes in to have her car's brakes inspected, for free, at a nation wide business that both services cars and sells autoparts, I won't say who you can figure out who it is yourself. The mechanic looks over the car and reports what found: a axle that should be replaced before it falls off, a dirty air filter that is robbing the engine needlessly of gas mileage, brake linings that are so worn down they are about to destroy the rotors, a clear and present safety issue, and severe oil leaks that left unrepaired will cause the engine to destroy in time. So what does the customer choose to spend her money on? A set of hubcaps. Unbelieveable!
It happens every day! A car rolls in barely running and with brakes so bad the car shouldn't even be on the road. The customer can't afford to fix the car properly and who wants to compromise on a safety issue like brakes? But if you look inside the car you will find a brand new stereo worth over a thousand dollars.
Yes, this country is stupid. There are a lot of potential immigrants who would like to move here who are a lot smarter, honest and harder working than some of the natives. I vote we deport the idiots that are holding our country back to make room for those who can make a difference. We can start with my supervisor.

SASSALICIOUS

YES! THERE ARE WAY TOO MANY STUPID PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY!!!

I work in a deli/ice cream shop. Everything is very clearly labelled and our store hours are clearly posted. But still I deal with people every day who don't understand that I'm really not going to serve them at 10:20 pm when we close at 10 pm. Yes, please call my boss and report me. I dare you because he'll agree with me.

Average conversation I have when serving ice cream:
Me: Hi. Can I help you?
Them:What flavors do you have?
Me: All of our flavors are posted over there (points to really big sign on wall)
Them:*brief look at sign, then starts pointing to various flavors that are also labelled* What's that one?
Me: Ma'am/Sir, I don't know what you're pointing at.
Them:That one! The one in the back corner.
Me: That's _______
Them:Ok.
Them:Give me a single scoop.
Me: Of what flavor?
Them:Mint (or whatever)
Me: Cone or dish
Them:Cone
Me: What kind of cone
Them:I already told you. MINT!
Me: I know that. What CONE do you want. *points at cone selection*. We have sugar, wafer, and waffle.
Them:Oh. Wafer
Me: *starts scooping into wafer cone*
Them:That's not the one I want. I wanted that one *points to WAFFLE cone*.
Me: The waffle cone?
Them:Yes

Transaction finished.

After 8 hours of that, I'm not a nice person. Sometimes my customer service goes way down and I end up very snarky (such as: The flavors are all labelled. I'm not going to stand here and tell you what each and every flavor is), which isn't good. And I know people are thinking that I'm a disrespectful bitch, but I don't even feel bad. Because what people fail to realize is I have to deal with that all day every day and you know what? Just because I'm on the other side of the counter serving them, doesn't mean they can treat me like crap either.

Grrrrr.

I also hate the fact that we have to label Butter Pecan ice cream as "contains nuts". I thought that would be obvious.

Ahhh yes the wonderious joys of customer service! I'm so glad I don't serve food anymore. I worked at a pizza place for a while I should have been fired within hours but for some reason they loved me too much to let me go. Aparently I provided some much needed entertainment. Honestly I should have quit just out of pity I was plain awful at my job. But even then I had the most incredably dumb people asking me questions. How much for....what is on?
SEE THAT SIGN!? CAN YOU EVEN READ?! I try not to judge but some people are just plain stupid. And yes if you know me you're probably giggling to yourself for all the times I've done stupid stuff like that to poor people who have to provide me with customer service.

It's not so much little things that irritate me, I mean everyone is entitled to have thier off days. When I worked in retail I just took.

The one thing that irritates me are smart people that act dumb.

Day One: "We have like no money. We couldn't afford to take Ethan (thier one year old son) to the doctors for a check up after he got over his cold. (Believe me whn I say, when my nephew gets sick, he gets really sick!)

Day Two:
(Same person mind you, from above) "Hey look at my new razor phone!"
Me: That's nice, how much did it cost?
Them: Ninety-seven dollars.

This woman is a fairly bright person and it frustrates me to no end at the decisions she makes.

After wasting more than half of my life interacting with the public in various meaningless jobs I would have to say "YES"

I served 15 years in a pet shop. I sent animal after animal to their doom at the hands of mouth breathing ape things gone wrong.

Try catching a specific tropical fish out of a tank of identical ones for a mother and her 3 cubs.
"No, no that's not it.No, no that one. No, that's not it. Oh, you just missed it."
I was elbow deep in the tank trying to pin "their" fish in the corner with the net, while
was using my free hand to hold a flashlight. Did I mention it was during a blackout??!?

They could not believe I did not feel like helping them after they said,
" we bought this at walmart, can you show me how to set it up?"
or "we'll just buy that over at walmart."

I could continue with my current job. Now I work at a firm lobbying my state legislature. The comparisons to the pet shop are endless. I can even think up at least 20 right now that do not involve feces.

I tried to explain to a friend the lack of intelligence among the masses. He thought it was just a level of ignorance that could be fixed through education. Then he took a call center job.

Now he realizes the only education that would fix the problem would come from a hammer to their skulls.

I too worked at an ice cream place, once upon a time. I had someone call one night to ask how much our stainless steel was. Hello! Did you not listen when I answered the phone with the name of the shop?! I also had someone call to ask if I knew the recipe for chocolate chip cookies. WTF? Or the woman( when I worked at a bookstore) who wanted to see a book with a picture of a fetus... because she thought she'd just had a miscarriage. Go to the freakin' hospital!!!!!

We need a new way to measure smarts. A IQ only tells you how smart you can be. Common sense is not common in fact it's endangered. The U.S.A is populated by people who are mentally lazy. CYBERSNARK

Canada's even worse off: we get the best (worst?) from the US and England (and everywhere else, it seems).

I proofread essays for University students, and I've started to think that Business, Administration, and (God help us) Engineering students don't actually talk, they just point at things and grunt.

[Actual excerpt from a 2nd year Admin student essay]
Quote:

By eliminating trade tariffs between Canada and China, Canadians can consume higher quality goods and services that imported from China at lower prices. Canadian workers can specialize in the products and services that they have higher productivity than Chinese workers and exchange for goods and services that China has a competitive advantage to product. For example, Canada has less competitiveness in manufacturing industry but exporting forest and agricultural products, which China has insufficient materials. Canada can import textiles, foot wares from China and exports agricultural products, benefited from producing more efficiently and consuming higher quality goods at lower prices. The wages of the Canadian workers would increase as a result of specialization and free trade.
[/excerpt]

I appreciate that a good number of Ottawa U's Engineering/Business/Admin students are foreign, either recent immigrants or in country to study before returning to their homelands, but if they're taking the course in English, there really should be some higher standard. (Or just offer the course in Chinese, Indian, French, or any of the other native languages I've encountered in this work.)

The faculties should really make it a point to put them through some kind of linguistics course. Most of these essays appear to have been written in other languages then translated in Babelfish.

English majors have to go through non-English courses (philosophy, political theory, history, etc), why can't Business students be handed a few English courses as pre-reqs?

The UK is very stupid.

I worked in a car park for a while, and the number of moronic drivers I had to deal with was rediculous.

*Disabled badge holders that demanded I move other disabled badge holders so that they could park there... thier reasoning being - "Im more disabled."

*People routinely asking me where there are free spaces. I can't keep my eye on five thousand parking spaces and tell you where there is one.

*People asking me for the entrance. It has a BIG. Im talking easly a metre high/two wide sign that says "Entrance" over it. It can be seen from the other side of the car park. Im stood under it when people ask me.

*People pointing at a parking space and saying "Can I park there?"

*And the best one - People parking on double-yellow lines, on "Do not park" signs and in front of fire exits and then saying "I thought that was a parking space..." morons.

I think its the general populace of the world that is stupid to be honest.

ROCKETJOCK

My own favorite sign of the oncoming mental apocalypse:

On the sides of a case of beer or soda, right next to the two cut-out holes that are obviously there to function as handles, are the words "Not to be used as a handle."

Huh? What the hell are they there for then, improved airflow at high speed?

Well, the reason is, some idiot let a case sit at the bottom of a cooler all weekend, until the ice melted, and the cardboard got sodden; then he lifted it out--it tore, natch, and fell on his foot, breaking a toe or two. He then sued the company. And won.

So the company covered their assets by making it clear that those holes aren't intended as a handle, Hell no.

The problem with making anything foolproof is that fools are so damned clever...

Every country is full of stupid people there is no doubt, look at our leaders what fine examples they are.
I work part time in a chinese noodle box/bar/canteen (whatever you want to call it) after school and some of the questions i get are not only dumb but infuriating especially when the customer is serious. Questions such as:
~Do these prawn crackers contain real prawns? WTF?!
~How hot is hot? Ok yeah not so bad but how r u supposed to tell some one how hotsome thing is??

Unfortuantly even some of my friends arnt the brightest crayon in the box, one recently asked - after viewing a black and white picture for Studio-
"Oh wow Was it black and white that day?"

BSCPANTHERFAN

It has been like this for a while. I worked at my college library back in the 80s. It was a private liberal-arts college that is regularly rated as one of the top 50 in the country. The exit to the library was two large, very heavy glass doors. The hydraulic arm on the right hand door broke, resulting in a jarring slam whenever someone used it. We put a sign on the door reading "Please use other door", and an arrow pointing to the left door(conveniently located less than two inches away from said sign). People who scored in the high 20s to low 30s on their ACT would go through the anti-theft arch and turnstile, stop at the double door, then come back through the turnstile, usually with some difficulty since it only turned one way, walk up to the counter and ask us, "Where is the other door?" When we pointed it out to them, they would leave, only to do the same thing the next day! Finally, I put a sign on the left-hand door reading "This IS the other door", at which point the very same people who had asked every day would get to the doors, read one sign, read the other sign, and turn around and say, "DUH! We knew that."

Be very afraid knowing that most of these people are in middle-to-upper management somewhere in America.

So who is he?
He's my husband.
Well who in the damn galaxy ain't!

I teach special education at the middle school level so I have a couple of words about this:

Be afraid, be very afraid...the future does not look bright if students are any indication of where we are headed (and I work in an upper middle class kind of NYC suburb)! Of course, the middle school aged child is an exceptional being. Maybe I should teach high school...

The apples don't fall far from the tree. Trying to enlist parent support is often a dead end b/c they aren't willing to put in the work required in parenting. Children are often a mirror of their parents' behaviors and opinions. (Okay, I'm being harsh. Not all parents are like this - it's just been one of those weeks! - but really, parents come in and act, or dress, as stupidily as their children!)

The amount of misinformation in the general public is astounding. One more student tells me that the US is in Iraq b/c they bombed the World Trade Center and I'm going to put my head into the over head projector and turn it on! I agree with the person who said (about Bush) "keep 'em scared and stupid"! It's working...

Okay, it's May and by this time in the year I'm short on patience and acceptance and hope for the future. Ask me again in September if the US is full of stupid people and hopefully I'll be full of the fresh optimism of a new school year!

If there was some great move akin to peer preesure working it's way to a gestalt to get people to constantly think harder, more and smarter we would be much better off. Sometimes the developementantaly idsabled are smarter than the public. I used to drive a schoolbus once upon a time. The "slow" kids weren't that bad, I have no problem with them, but the people who have perfectly good brains and choose not to use them I have a problem with. I blame television for a lot of it. The public is too obsessed with their reality shows or sports teams to give half a care about the state of the world, their government and what is really happening around them.

the fact that people go to a pizza buffet and eat 4-5 plates of pizza and chug two glasses of Diet Pepsi still amazes me... if you didn't understand that, see the original post...

anyhoo, the fact that Arrested Development had such poor ratings solidifies as fact that most people can't understand a joke unless you explain it

oh oh, and the fact that everyone is bitching about the gas prices but the sidewalks haven't gotten any crowdier... shit, that's not a word

Here's a basic physics lesson as applied to automobiles that I see every day and I seem to be the only one who gets it.
Every second spent at a red light is a second that your engine is burning gas that isn't aquiring mileage. The fuel burnt while waiting is wasted. Every time time brakes are applied all the kinetic energy of your car in motion is converted to heat by creating friction. If you bring your car to a stop you have to burn more fuel to bring it back up to speed again.

I'm driving down the road and I see the traffic light I'm approaching has turned red. So I take my foot off the accelerator and slow down and coast into a stop at the light. The guy behind me, driving a Hummer moves into the other lane and speeds up, passes me and then pulls back into my lane and jams on the brakes so he can be first.
So this guy has burned extra fuel to get ahead of me so that he can sit and burn extra fuel for a longer amount of time. Then final twist of the screw is that when the light finally turns green he is too busy talking on the phone to notice and wastes not only more of his time and money but mine as well. I have friends of mine over in Iraq being shot at to secure oil reserves so that this moron and thousands more like him can burn them up thoughtlessly. I guess that you could say that there is a tax for this guy's stupidity in the form of more money that he has to pay at the gas pump, but that money isn't going to the government to be spent on something decided on by our congress. It's going into the pockets of a bunch of greedy oil executives.
Anybody reading this has the power to make this situation better. One, don't drive like a idiot. Two, don't let your friends drive like idiots. Three, get my friends out of Iraq while they are still alive. Four, if you don't like the way congress is run tell your represenatives what you want them to do, they work for you, it's their job to represent your interests. If they don't represent your interests vote for some one that does. If you can't find some who does then run for congress yourself.

Okay so I got off of physics and into politics, it's a free country, for the moment. I said it now because come monday I might not be around to say this.

I can't speak for anyone else but when I had my first job I lived 30 miles away on top of a hill, I'm not walking that. My second job is much better, I still live on top of the hill, but now it's only 15 miles...

P.S. I live with my parents and don't have any money (yet) which is why I am on the hill, I intend to remedy that situation but it is slow going.

I live in a busy little town... I don't have a car so I walk to everything in this town... 20 minute walk to the movie theater... 40 minute walk to Wal-Mart... 15 minute walk to the library... 5 minute walk to Giant

I guess that I wasn't really speaking about the entire country... most small towns aren't blessed with two Wal-Marts and five grocery stores

I was only saying that 90% of the people on the road in this town need to go live on the North Pole... I hear it's getting pretty nice up there.

What would you do with all your extra time if you got a bicycle? Very soon the north pole will all be open ocean.

Its humanity my friend, it has little to do with this country. I hate quoting the bible but:
Judge not less ye be judged...

this is more my speed:
Only a fool is astonished by the foolishness of mankind.

Only the half mad are wholly alive!
