Mattie,
Il est toujours bien a vous voir (I know that's incorrectly sentenced...). J'espere aussi que nous avons les temps pour parler aujourd'hui!

Wow, rusty, rusty, rusty! I promise that I speak it much better than I type it!

I took a course in Irish language/lit/culture in University. I've forgotten most of it (bar one phrase: "Is mise Canadeach" = "I am Canadian"), but I still have the course materials so I can look it up. Teacher said there were also a couple of Irish-Celtic radio stations.

I've even managed to find a couple of Celtic pop songs (I was burning a CD for the kids I work with; a bunch of songs in various languages, just to see which they could identify).

I also took a semester of Latin (voluntarily), a semester of Old English (not so voluntarily [whose dumbass idea was it to make a third-year linguistics course a prerequisite to students who haven't had the previous two years of linguistics?!?]), and a semester of Middle English (involuntarily, but I enjoyed it). Plus what was effectively a full year of Shakespearean English (pretty much a language unto itself).

Shiny!
Being a student of the medieval period myself, I have had a chance to study several older versions of modern languages...not to say I can speak or read them with anything approaching fluency, it's mostly been pattern recognition and noticing how words evolve. That, and how Latin neatly ties several of the languages together. I have self-studied Latin, but it was more of a pursuit than anything...mostly so I had a better understanding of the occasional Latin I came across in my studies. Apparently some of it took, because I can usually work out the gist of a phrase in Latin without too much difficulty.

I also self-studied Irish Gaelic ("Teach Yourself" series), but never got around to serious study. Nowadays, I pick up interesting tidbits in other languages to add to my repetoire. It's a real hit at parties!

Cybersnark, these Celtic pop songs you speak of...where did you find them, if I may ask?

I have a difficult time with conjugations in the passe compose and futur. Aargh! I can never keep them straight. And then you have to know which ones have take etre. Yeah, I also struggle with all of the du's and du la's. Most of the time I just say what makes sense to me, and then bear the correction from either my dad, or the person I'm speaking to. Haha! Ohh, I'm almost hopeless.

Now that we've watched Buster Keaton (was it this floor or the Nook? I get them confused) I'm in the mood for Benny & Joon.

I got 'em through Filesharing Revolution, so they're probably drifting about the P2P web as we speak.

"Rithill Aill" by Karen Matheson
"Lain Ghllinn'cuaich" by Capercaillie
"A Neansai Mhile Gra" by Cherish the Ladies

(By "pop" I mean "catchy beat, modern instruments," they both sound fairly folky [like someone took traditional ballads and backed them with modern instruments], though "Rithill Aill" has a danceable beat.)

Fans of Celtic music would be well-served to google the Afro-Celt Sound System --they're an African/Celtic fusion band. At least three CDs out ('cause that's the number I have). Really cool sound (and one of the disks has a CD-ROM "mix your own beats" DJ setup).

yes i have read Good Omens, funny funny book, need to read it again actually. I used to be a huge Pratchett fan, so gave it a go, now I'm a huge Gaiman fan as well!

And that wasn't quite the senario I had in my head, but yours is better, can you imagine how funny The Omen would have been had his parents been total hicks? I would go and see that film.
