Did you know that Japanese is read right to left. Their books all begin at what we would deem the back page and go to the front. I did not know that until a professor of mine brought some Japanese scholars to class. They brought some anime books with them--these fat, paperback novel sized comics. SO cool!

I used to read Piers Anthony. Xanth. I read a lot of those when I was younger. Never really got into a lot of his other stuff, though.

I write in all of my journals from back to front. It seems to me to be the best way and the rest of you are backwards.

It's another reason why I think I would very much enjoy learning Hebrew. Everything's written right to left and back to front. Fantastic.

Welcome to the fun and exciting (and sometimes really tedious) world of manga!

Manga is usually published in magazines with multiple different titles. You may have seen Shonen Jump, a manga collection that has gained popularity in NorAm. Eventually, these anthologies are compiled into manga digests (which is what you describe, so we can buy them by title without having to get a bunch of other stories). The digests are kinda like "DVD comics," and include "extras" like editorial essays and comments by the artist/writer. Of course, manga creators are very busy people, so sometimes they get distracted by other paying gigs (paging Anno Hideaki, wherever he is).

The manga "style" (actually a wide variety of styles allowing just about anything) is really catching on, and TokyoPop has started running a bi-annual contest called Rising Stars of Manga, for aspiring manga-ka (that's what manga artists/writers call themselves) to submit their best work, get published, and maybe hit it big.

Past winners include Van Von Hunter ( http://www.vanvonhunter.com/index.html). Unfortunately, I can't find the Rising Stars webpage, and I'm unable to get the manga until a year or so after it's published ('cause I'm living in the centre of a cultural black hole).

Pretty much any animé series has a companion manga, usually going in a wildly different direction. Typically, stories start out in manga form, and are then adapted into animé (Sailor Moon is an example: it started out as a really cool manga, and was then dumbed-down into an anime series, which was then further dumbed-down as it was translated into English --the manga is surprisingly dark). Animé production usually tends to go faster, meaning that the animé ends up out-pacing the manga and having to make stuff up. This happened to Hellsing, which is why they're releasing a new Helsing Ultimate OVA, which does follow the manga storyline.

Other times, an animé series is adapted into manga, as with Evangelion. Both Eva series are written by the same guy, but he explains that he was "in a bad place" when he wrote the animé, and it shows. He's less angry "now," and the manga is a bit. . . healthier (well, less insane). Unfortunately, we've been waiting for volume 10 for over two years now.

WOW! You're right, what they brought in was manga, not anime. I was just too lazy to look it up in my brain. I never really knew the difference between anime and manga, and so I just supposed it was one in the same. Obviously I was wrong!

So, to make sure I've got it. Anime is gets pumped out like there's no tomorrow and as a result is kinda cheap and the story lines aren't very deep. Sometimes they are ripped off versions of manga series, but due to production, things get left out.

Manga, on the other hand, is like the souped up version of anime. Pretty much the opposite of what I just described above. Right?

Well, animé isn't necessarily cheap or shallow (Firefly aside, the best American TV can offer is on par with low-mediocre animé). There are cases where the animé's better (a lot of manga uses this etherial, floaty art style that looks really pretty but isn't very easy to figure out), or adds completely new characters (like Ayame in InuYasha). In fact, animé can often go into greater depth, by taking a one or two-part story and stretching it out over a half-dozen episodes. (Again, Sailor Moon is an example; the entire first season/series/year of the animé [up until Rini appears] accounts for only one or two manga digests.)

(The main thing to keep in mind about Japanese [and, I believe, British] TV is that they don't use the American model. In America, one of the goals is to try to keep the series going [staving off cancellation] for as long as possible. In Japanese and British TV, deals are made for "series," which run X number of episodes --and [barring spectacularly bad ratings or other uncontrollable circumstances] you get the full set, then it's done. If it's a runaway success, networks may ask the creator/studio for another series [or studios can take the initiative and try to sell another series], which is similarly planned out. Beginning, middle, end, all set out [or at least considered] before penning the first ep. I've yet to hear of an animé series getting cancelled. Manga, from what I can see, runs more like American TV, continuing on either until fans or creators get tired [this isn't to say manga-ka don't plan things out, it's just that they don't have to count how many issues they've got left]. Even then, there needn't be a real "cancellation," but their stories just kinda trail off and new manga are slipped into the magazines).

Just thought of another (extreme) example: Ghost in the Shell, which has three distinct continuities:
-The movie 'verse (Ghost in the Shell and GitS: Innocence).
-The manga 'verse (GitS, GitS: Man-Machine Interface)
-The series 'verse (GitS: Stand-Alone Complex [series 1], GitS: S.A.C. 2nd Gig [series 2], and GitS: S.A.C. Solid-State Society [OVA])
Each of these universes is self-contained, but with similar characters and events uniting all three. Personally, I prefer the series (the movie characters aren't really that likeable, and the manga borders on Rob Liefield-ism (Masamune Shirow is mainly famous for drawing cheesecake in anatomically stilted poses, but S.A.C. watches like a cyberpunk version of the A-Team).

Yeah, I'm left handed. And I don't read them front to back, I automatically open them from the back. It just makes more sense to me, and since I've had to spend my whole life doing everything backwards because the whole world is backwards to me, I decided one day (sometime back in HS) that I didn't HAVE to be backwards when it was just me, and started writing in all my all my journals from back to front. And it's a habit I've kept ever since.

And there you go. Now you all know one of my biggest quirks.

Of course, none of you will ever get to see any of my amazing backwards journals because another habit I have is of burning them after I finish them. I don't want my diaries published post mortem and people making them into movies and plays and broadway musicals. Not that my life is that interesting, mind, but it's MY life and my thoughts and they're gonna stay that way.

oooh, i'm away for... weeks. And it all get interesting!

The cutest europeans i ever saw were the spaniards, or the catalunians, to be exact, in barcelone, but then the only other time i've been to europe was a small village outside of Calais where my friends parents had a house, and basically it was either the very old or the very young.

But i am definetly, really really up for a trip to italy.

After D*C has done its best to suck my bank account dry not just now but for the rest of my life, i'll attempt to squirral away funds. and maybe, one day, one far away day, i may be able to consider holidays again.

Manga - i owe everything i know about it to a brit sci-fi magazine called SFX - truly one of the greatest magazines ever written by geeks and shakespears monkeys. They did a 'welcome to the world of Manga' artical a few months ago that i actually understood. And something of it to my brother, who is currently working his way through the GITS S.A.C series. Jeeze, i hope no one tries to recreate her costume for D*C *shudders*

The ones im really interested in are the studio Gibli (sp?) films - howls moving castle etc, but are they even anime? or are they something different ?

Well as I understand it Manga is an artform that traces it's routes back hundreds of years culminating in the 'comic' books we see today. Anime grew from Manga with Japanese experimentation with western animation techniques. Many Anime series are taken straight from manga, but you are right, Anime is the word the Japanese use for any animated film.

Plus there's her 2nd Gig costume, complete with Spike-like billowy leather coat.

Strangely, Motoko's one of those women who manages to look even sexier when she's fully clothed. I can't find any pictures of the new Section 9 cold-weather uniforms (with turtlenecks, fleece vests, and trenchcoats), but they look hella cool.
