GOAT

not very imaginative, I guess but goat was a nickname that I was given while working on an engineering team. I had a goatee at the time and was thus dubbed goat.

the username that I have for my main email is a little more interesting. when I signed up for it, I had to use a minimum of 5 characters and since goat is 4 and I had just started learning Japanese at the time, I looked up what goat was in Japanese. Unfortunately, yagi (Japanese for goat) isn't any longer, but I added the suffix sama (implies that the person is of much higher social rank; a lord or something like that) and came up with yagisama which roughly translates to "lord goat". Sometimes I can tell whether or not someone can understand japanese if they look at me funny after telling them my email address

CAPERCAILLIE

Mavourneen - do you know the song Kathleen Mavourneen? It has been a favorite of mine for years. Now I know more about it. Thank you!

My online name is a nickname my husband came up for me when we were on our honeymoon in Scotland. It is gaelic for "woodcock". It is not very romantic but at least it is better than the other choice, Killicrankie, which is the name of a battle site and which for some unknown reason, it caught his fancy.

Back to the woodcock story, I grew up in a city. However, I married a man from the whillywacks. My family sort of views him as a Neaderthal man. He and his father and brother actually own guns and go hunting every fall. What do they hunt? Little birds with long skinny noses. I was initially bothered by this until I discovered that the birds are winning. Those little birdies are toying with their fragile male egos. Actually, I must admit, I love to go hunting with my husband. It is the most gorgeous time of year and it is fun to watch the dogs on scent. Who woulda thunk it?

Capercaillie is also the name of a really great Scottish band. Their songs are wonderful. The lead singer is a soprano with that high haunting sound that only the Gaelic singers have. I think they were featured in Braveheart or Robroy. (I'm a greycoat and my memory is failing!)

RUGBUG

Mine has nothing to do with Firefly, but I use it almost everywhere because it is rarely taken (if it is, I add the three letters of the town where I live). I hate nothing more than thinking up internet names. I came up with the name because:

I swing dance (lindy, balboa, shag, charleston). I use to swing dance A.LOT. Like every night of the week. Until the wee hours. Rugbug is a combination of Rugcutter and Jitterbug, two terms from swing dancing's past.

I like how Rugbug sounds in my head...makes me smile. It's a happy handle. Although, after meeting some people IRL, I've realized it is very odd to introduce yourself as Rugbug. :shrugs: Oh, well.

I've been a huge Star Wars fan for a long time, so when I started using the internet when I was 10, I simply combined my name with my favorite Star Wars character's name. And the name stuck, so I've used it everywhere on the net (not just on Star Wars-related sites).

TRAVELER

I like to climb on my bike and go. Have ended up in places I didn't start out for. Like they say, it's not where your going but how you get there. I usually get there soaking wet and tired. I picture myself as a Bilbo Baggins, huffing and puffing trying to catch up with the dwarves on the first day of their adventure and wishing I hadn't forgotten my handkerchiefs. So I see myself as a traveler.

JUTS

I have had my name for most of my life. Juts (rhymes with boots) was bestowed upon me by a hockey coach way way back, just after the dinosaurs had walked the earth. Jut being the first three letters of my last name, I am guessing it was easier to just scream Juts instead of my entire last name.

It has followed me ever since. So instead of ignoring my destiny of having a forever lingering nickname, I have embraced it and now use it for just about everything.

RYCE

I have a last name that is not pronounced as it is spelled, and most people do not get it right on the first try. Many moons ago, my high school calc teacher (who was a riot and gave everyone nicknames) called role on the first day of class and came up with "Krispies" as my last name (it was either that or Kleenex). So he decided to call me Rice Krispies for the next two years. I like my spelling of Ryce better. It could have been worse: another girl was called Tarantula.

No power in the 'verse can stop me!

PONYXPRESSINC

I was indoctrinated into Westerns and sci-fi as a nipper and I was always fascinated by the idea of the pony express.

When I was trying to come up with a screen name, I had a plot bunny kicking around about the Firefly verse version of the Pony Express, (Very small ship, comparatively huge engine, perfect for smuggling black market beagles).

Anyway, the story never went anywhere but it was the first thing I thought of when I joined up.

So, one day there may be a story about the Pony Express Incorporated and that's where PonyXpressinc came from.

It's really my mild mannerd alter ego, I have other names elsewhere Bwah ha ha ha ha!

DREAMWALKER

When I was a bit younger (up till I turned 18, 5 years ago) the Church I used to belong to had a camp that was a combined archaeology/Native American culture camp. I'm not Native American but I find the culture fascinating and I'm an Anthropologist. The woman who ran the camp was a Seneca Elder named Grandmother White Wolf and she gave all of the campers Native American names. We each got a younger name and an adult name. The name I was given during my last year at the camp (when I was 18) was Dreamwalker. I've always thought it was beautiful and I've used it on a couple of message boards and it's my AIM screen name (Dreamwalker2415 if anyone ever wants to chat).

HUGHFF

My first name is Hugh, you'll be stunned to read. My last name before I married starts with an F. The woman I love also had a last name which began with an F. When we got married, we decided that we wwanted to share our names rather than one person changing to match. So we became the hyphenated FF, the firefly link is just a marvellous co-incidence.

PS in NZ at that time, the woman could change her name when she married but the man had to change his name by deed poll, so to do what Mrs FF got for free, I paid $88.

it's just a screen name now...and the only way i sign emails/cards/letters to her.

SIKKUKUT

Mine is the name of one of the bad guys from C.J. Cherryh's superlative Pride of Chanur novels. Rather than the villain, though, he's the protagonists' untrustoworthy and dangerous ally. He is, of course, nonhuman; he is kif, a treacherous, brutal race with the all-pervasive drive to save face. Kind of like me, except the exact opposite.

I've used it on numerous message boards, mainly because it's never, ever taken. In chat rooms, people sometimes call me Sikk, which sort of amuses me.

On the few occasions it has been taken, I switch over to IssekOfTheJug, a reference to the best piece of short fantasy fiction ever written, Fritz Leiber's "Lean Times in Lankhmar."

I don't think anybody's ever actually gotten it.

Still active, relatively speaking, although I just checked and unless I blinked at the wrong time while scrolling I haven't posted in this thread yet. I know there was another one in which I did, or else I'm thinking of other boards.

E. C. Gordon is the main character in Robert Heinlein's Glory Road, a part for which Nathan would be well suited if anyone ever makes the movie. He used his initials only, since his parents saddled him with the awkward name of Evelyn Cyril. He answered to various nicknames over the years, including Easy, Flash, Scar and Oscar. To understand those last two you'll just need to read the book.

Karel was the name of a D&D character I played decades ago. When I finally joined fff.net after lurking for about a year and a half, I needed to come up with something, and Karel popped into my head.

JustShiny and I are still in touch and she still calls me Karel. I really like that.
