We lost another great soul. A fantastic example of someone who lived life passionately and enthusiastically.

I had to find out what happened. Here's what I found.

Steve Irwin killed in freak accident
05 September 2006

By DAVID WILLIAMS, LOUSIA HEARN and AAP
Sydney Morning Herald

Television personality and environmentalist Steve Irwin has died from a stingray wound while filming off north Queensland.

Friends believe he may have died instantly when struck by a stingray as he filmed a sequence for his eight-year-old daughter Bindi's new TV series.

Irwin's friend of 20 years, Ferre De Deyne said Irwin had been struck by the stingray while filming. "The stingray just happened to be swimming around and out of the blue whacked his tail at him," he said.

"It is absolutely tragic. I have dived so many times with stingrays and they are usually very placid things," he said.

Known worldwide as the Crocodile Hunter, 44-year-old Irwin was famous for his enthusiasm for wildlife and his catchcry "Crikey!"

Irwin had been filming a new documentary called Ocean's Deadliest with friend and manager John Stainton at Batt Reef, off Port Douglas about 11am.

"He came over the top of a stingray and the stingray's barb went up and went into his chest and put a hole into his heart," Mr Stainton said.

"It's likely that he possibly died instantly when the barb hit him, and I don't think that he ... felt any pain.

"He died doing what he loved best."

Irwin was pulled aboard his research vessel, Croc One, for a 30-minute dash to Low Isle, where a Queensland Rescue Helicopter had been summoned, his Australia Zoo said in a statement.

The crew of the Croc One performed constant CPR during the voyage to Low Isle, but medical staff pronounced him dead about noon.

"It became clear fairly soon that he had non-survivable injuries," said Dr Ed O'Loughlin, who treated Irwin at the scene.

"He had a penetrating injury to the left front of his chest.

"He had lost his pulse and wasn't breathing."

Dr O'Loughlin said it appeared Mr Irwin had suffered a "form of cardiac arrest" but a post-mortem examination would be conducted in Cairns.

Sooo sad!

Here's to the man who, (during my still on-going childhood) taught me to always be careful, but daring, to test yourself, but within your limits.

And who had the whole gang saying crikey.

For you, Steve. Always for you.

Mr. Irwin will be remembered as a man who lived what he believed. His legacy to the animals of Australia will not be forgotten.

Condolances and prayers to Terri and the children. This must be devestating for them.

I'm a mite tentative about suggesting this... but maybe we should make Steve Irwin an honorary BDH? Sure, he wasn't in Firefly or Serenity - he may not have even heard of it, but he did what he did because he loved doing it, and didn't care whether or not society in general thought he was stupid at some points or not. He's always been a hero to me, since when I was four years old and first saw him. For me, the way he lived his life... it seems to me he has all the qualities to be a BDH; recklessness, passion, humor, and a need to do what many people wouldn't have the nerve to.

Just a thought...

Now I am learning about scary.

This news has made me so sad. I've spent a day or two trying to decide why, since I hadn't seen his show for a while. What I finally decided is this: so often these days we see fake enthusiasm everywhere. You know, the celebrity who acts thrilled to be on yet another talk show, a pitch person who just loves that product, the politician who declares that THIS is the best crowd ever. Rarely do we get to see overwhelming excitement and joy from someone who is actually sincere, but we got to see it in Steve Irwin. He really did love that snake or lizard, even if it bit him in the hand. I'm sure he loved that stingray, even after it stung him. I'd like to think he probably said, "Crikey! Heaven's even better than I thought! It's a real beauty."

We'll miss you, Steve.

I think that's a mighty fine idea, Shrouded. While Mr Irwin popped up well past my childhood, I enjoyed watching him on TV and think fondly of him in the same way I do Marlin Perkins and Jacques Cousteau, who brought a wealth of information of the natural world to me and my siblings when I was growing up (about a third of what I watched as a kid was "nature" programs--National Geographic's Explorer, Wild Kingdom, etc.) and they were definitely heroes to me.

So...yes I second naming Steve Irwin as a BDH!

me too.. he was a BDH in his own verse.. a truly amazing man... and I agree about the genuine love and enthusiasm. What you saw was the real man. And he was a real man. Loved his family and his work.

And I hope he does find heaven a real beauty...

Here is some new info I read from the Associated Press: "Steve Irwin was videotaped pulling a poisonous stingray barb from his chest in his last moments of life, officials said today as tributes poured in for TV's Crocodile Hunter." "It shows that Steve came over the top of the ray and the tail came up and spiked him here (in the chest) and he pulled it out and the next minute he's gone," John Stainton, Irwin's manager said."

This whole thing is just so tragic that it makes me shake my head everytime I think about it. But as others have said, he died doing what he loved....so how tragic can that be? I guess the really tragic part of all of this is the loss for his family. Especially his children.

I'll agree with that. I've watched his show many times and I can't count the times I yelled at the screen "WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING YOU CRAZY LOON!!!!" His enthusiasm for his work was infectious and always could make you smile.

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

As a true blue Aussie Chick I would like to vote Steve Irwin an honourary BDH too...

In fact I thought the world of him - he inspired millions around the world to look at their prejudices against non-cute, so called dangerous animals and he changed the way kids think about the world around them... Believe me I know - I am a nanny and I've been dealing with the disbelief that kids have about death all week so far...

An amazingly commited hymanitarian who loved wildlife with a passion and lived life as he believed it should be lived. His dedication to his kids was palpable and you never heard him mention or saw him look at his wife without the deepest love! My thoughts and prayers are with Terri, Bindi-Sue and 'Baby Bob' (Robert)

Sorry - I think I've got something in my eye....

Yep - BDH - highest honour one could bestow...

I was saddened by the news as well ...

He kept me amused and interested for many a day ...

Family members and i used to sit around and watch his various shows on Animal Planet

ahh memories .... memories

I posted this item on another thread talking about Steve here at fff.net so for those who saw it there, I apologize

A few years ago I bought the Red Dwarf Role Playing Game and at some point I decided to try my hand at designing a character .. I racked my poor brain and came up with a waxdroid character based loosely on Steve ...

Hope people here enjoy the item

And throw in my vote to give Steve a honorary BDH tag

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!

He touched the world. I remember my reaction to one of his first shows. I thought "must continue to watch! This fool is going to get ate!". Then I just fell in love with his show.
The passion that he shared with the world. HIS passion. The animals. He was not a fool, he was a genius. He hooked half the world with my response and the other half because they loved animals. After a few shows I wished him a long life but continued to watch because of his passion.
Steve Irwin was a great man! BDH for sure!

I was always so comforted by his fear of parrots:) I had a bad parrot experience and those things give me the willies and it was always nice, when people would give me a hard time about how harmless they are, to say " yeah well if Steve Irwin is wary of them ,they are obviously the most dangerous creatures known to man" So let's give a rousing cheer for our BDAH( Big Damn Aussie Hero)
