You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Seems some folk have the idea that we're a very tight-knit clique and they don't wanna intrude. Most of us our very close, but we welcome any new Forsaken with open arms!

See? Just a cuddly little phoenix, me

Forsaken history and thread list can be found here:

I agree with jossisagod, very shiny phoenix pic.

Any early risers in here? How about folks that haven't gone to bed yet? People from overseas?

I am still learning where in the world everyone is from. I myself am in Warner Robins, GA, which would place me square in the middle of the Eastern Time Zone. Stuck at work at this early hour (one benefit is that I get to go home at 2:30) and lookin for some shiny folks to talk to.

That's simply because the Forsaken are usually so loquatious that being first is nigh on impossible. I have thought that there should be a new measure of time for the shortest instant measurable, the time bewteen a thread starting and being bombarded with posts! Still it depends on the time of day! Seems pretty quiet now.

It seems to me that most folks get on at night (US time) and stay on until the wee hours of the morning (sometimes until some of us have to be at work :P ). I am not on except at work due to two little boys that demand my attention when I am at home so I usually miss the bulk of the posts until afterwards.

Over here in my part of Australia, it's still earlyish evening, so unless the real world intervenes (as it has a habit of doing), I tend to be on around this time. Plus I'm sometimes on during the US night time, so I'm usually no more than an hour or two away from replying to stuff.

Yeah, I am glad that there are a few folks in here, because there is no one in chat this morning.

Graveyard shifts suck, but I guess they would just take some getting used to. No traffic on the way to and from work would be one boon I suppose.

When I first got into Firefly (March of this year) and found out about this site I was on all the time, but at that time my wife and I were living apart and she had the boys with her in Oklahoma. Now, I am lucky if I get to check my e-mail at night (though I am not regretful about it at all and wouldn't trade it for anything in the 'verse).

What do you do on your graveyard shift job (I might have asked before, but if I did, I forgot) ?

I answer phones; it's a service. I get to take a lot of emergency calls and talk to some very weird people.
Sadly, as the shift is ten hours, there is some traffic when I'm going to and from work. But when I'm off (like tonight) I can go places really late or early and there's nobody out. It's great!
I'm trying to get out, but there's just nothing available right now. The job market is luh-suh.
But did someone say party?

A thousand apologies, though the Photoshop certification does sound promising.

Yes, very much so. I adore the English language (but hate English classes) and writing, graphic design and Photoshop art, and I would like to study those as well as things I'm interested in but have no training in yet such as finance/investing, advertising, religious studies, human sexuality and psychology...
But the thought of studying any of those things for YEARS with all the attendant BS it takes to get a degree makes my skin crawl.
And MrT, I don't make any emotes. Sometimes I can fix them to show up against the black, assuming they're stationary. Penguin is the same way; he just plays with emotes, but he can fix and play with animated ones. He mentioned the program he used once, but I can't remember it right now.

Yeah, I spent 6 years getting a 4 year engineering degree (what can I say, I had a good time) but there was no way I could support my wife and boys without it (I am not good enough to be a bartender anywhere besides a casual dining restaurant, well, at least not yet) so I am glad that I was able to finish it. I can definitely feel you not wanting to spend 4 years getting the degree PhoenixRose, especially because a lot of people I know don't even use the ones they have to do the thing the degree is for.

Well, the duck feeding is not mine originally. Pver on http://www.stargate-alpha.com/command/ people tended to take things too seriously, forgetting that a- it was just a website, and b- it was based on a tv show (a work of fiction). It got to the point that people were being banned (some temporary, some permanent) with the instructions "go feed the ducks". This of course lead to lots of jokes about people bbqing ducks etc, but the main point was that even if there were no ducks nearby, people were better off going outside into reality, than sitting on a website griping and whinging.

It got enough notice that in the Stargate SG-1 episode Avenger 2.0 , one of the characters is found feeding ducks to relax (on a bridge that has no ducks in sight).

Anyway, I seem to think it fits here, and sums up my views as a forsaken.

Very funny indeed Nicodemus.

I especially like that they included it in an episode, kinda like Jayne's Lux in the BDM (the retardedly large gun that only gets off a few short bursts [irritation that Vera was not returned for the movie]) and 'I'm the Juggernaut, bitch' in X-Men 3.

Morning all! Or afternoon since it's almost 3pm here.

Ah, naps. I should be napping! I started teaching at 9:30 this morning and finished at 1pm. I'm back at 4:30 and have to work 'till 10pm. I didn't sleep well last night so I really, really should be at home having a snooze before I get back to work. Not gonna happen.

PR - there are loads of degrees out there that don't focus on any one thing! You could do something like multimedia that would cover things like photoshop, graphic design, web design, digital photography and all sorts of cool things most of us can't do I know degrees cost loads of money Stateside, but you might want to have a look at the options. It could be well worth it.

Plus you could always do a degree over here - we're much more reasonably priced! I'm sure I could clear some space for you here.

That's an idea! Never thought about trying to go overseas. Honestly didn't think I'd be able to get into a European University because the school system over there is, well, better. I'm not stupid, but there's lots I haven't learned, ya know?
But I shall have to ponder that
And multimedia; another good idea! I heard about an English degree called 'rhetoric' too, thought that sounded pretty good as a minor maybe. Might have to do the finance stuff as a minor, though.
I really need to do some intensive math review before I even consider trying to go back to school, though Bother.
You'd clear space for me? That's so sweet

Well, I studied English Litt for three years (not that you'd know from my spelling, or my grammar when I'm tired or posting in a hurry) and I absolutely loved it. You'd think three years of English would be pretty boring, but there was so much to explore: I ended up specialising in Old and Medieval language and literature, although my final year minor dissertation was on the representation of motherhood in contemporary Irish women's poetry. I love exploring the role of women in all kinds of media, created by both women and men. It's part of what drew me to Buffy.

...and I'm wandering off the point. Sorry, I do that. At the IT centre where I work our Digital Photography teacher is studying multimedia, so that's what made it spring to mind. There are oodles of courses out there that specialise in one particular field but cover lots of different topics. And you could always start with something shorter and earn credit towards a degree. Lots of places do that.

It's a new site and kind of rough in places, but have a look at www.courses.ie for information on studying in Ireland, or just for a taste of the different courses we have available.

Of course I'd clear a space for you! Although my rooms kinda tidy so I may have to charge you rent for another one... aw, heck! We'll squeeze in! *starts stacking the piles of books taking up most of her floor*

I'd be willing to help with that, if you like. I really miss doing math just for the sake of math. Distance learning may be an issue, but I just wanted to throw in my offer.

Going to school in Europe would be a really neat experience, IMHO, and I hope that if you decide to that you are able to make it happen.

Plus you don't need math skills for every course. I've never been terribly comfy with numbers - I have to concentrate to add anything - but I still do just fine teaching computers, and have done during all the courses I've had to do so far. I even love Excel! People think that's crazy since I don't like math, but they keep missing the point. It does all the math for you! I'm only just hitting a bump with Excel expert, since that has a lot of financial and logical functions and, well, I'm not financial or logical!

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Wow, a tutor offer! Thanks, RIMG! I hope you have vast patience! (although, with the whole distance thing, you can't hear me rage and scream when I can't figure something out...)
It's good that not all courses require math, but getting a degree does require math courses, which of course require math. I sure wish I'd inherited my grandfather's prowess with math and scientific thinking!
I'm browsing through the site a bit; not laid out all that well, but I'm getting the gist. Of course going to school in Ireland would require being able to afford to fly there and then pay tuition (even if it's lower there) and not having parents to lean on. Still, I think it's about gorramn time I had an adventure! I'll just have to figure out how to go about it...

Hey, do you think everyone would get it if I called the next thread "If You Are a Dreamer..."?

I have plenty of patience PhoenixRose, I have two young sons and I wait tables several days a week. I would be very glad to help you in any way that I could.
