SAVEWASH

Now I am learning about scary.

Basically, this is an event where people attempt to write a 50,000-word novel in one month. Am I completely nuts for even considering this?

If you want more information, go here: www.nanowrimo.org

There was a mention of this in one of the threads on this site (I'm sorry I can't give credit to the poster because it was some time ago and I've forgotten who it was--if you know who you are, feel free to take credit on this thread) so I went to check it out. Now a friend of mine and I are actually considering it.

If you've ever tried it or know someone who has, please give me feedback. That seems like a LOT of words to write in 30 days, especially since I don't have a clear idea in mind.

Thanks for any advice or words of wisdom you can give me!

No takers?

(Yes, this is a shameless bump, but I'd really like to hear from somebody!)

The student paper at my university did a story about NaNoWriMo last year I think. Basically, to get to the 50 000 mark you'd have to write 1667 words per day, about 5 and a half pages. That's actually quite a lot since most people who participate say they don't always get a chance to write every day.

I say do it if you're interested. If you don't make it this year, there's always next year and so on.

Personally, I don't think I could do it. I mean, I love writing but I'd hate to be under that pressure. But I'm always up for giving support.

Personally I would NEVER do something like that. I suck at just writing five pages in a month let alone a 50,000 word novel!

But, I also say, if it's something you're willing to commit to doing, MORE POWER TO YOU!

My boyfriend (who has written two novels) tried to do it acouple of years ago and didn't even come close. He said it was fun though. He wanted both of us to try and do it last year but we didn't. Honestly I think it is worth a try if you don't take it too seriously. From what I hear most people don't finish but have a blast trying.

You were busy trying to get yourself lit on fire. It happens.

I've heard people say that it's about quantity, not quality. The entire story (you kind of have to have some sort of plot, and you can do a basic outline of the story - no actual writing, I'm afraid - before November) can totally stink, but as long as you make it to 50,000, you win! And, these people also say that if you take your writing too seriously (like the perfectionist im me does), then it's best not to do it. The entire month would be agony.

They also said that it's kind of fun just seeing where the story goes, because they have to automatically write down whatever ideas pop into their head.

I was thinking about doing it, but... my muse is very sensitive, and shy, and hyper-perfectionist. It would be such a waste of space (in my opinion; go right ahead and do it, if you want).

So, if you're gonna do it, then good luck! :biggring: I'll be rooting for you.

Thanks, everybody. I'm pretty sure I'm going to give it a shot and fail, but that's better than not trying and wondering ever after if I could have done it.

My muse is a little hit-and-miss so I doubt I could write that many words every single day for 30 straight days, but it might also open me up a little and make me a little less inhibited about writing. It's a good thing it's not quality that counts here!

Thanks again for all of your encouragement. If you don't see a lot of posts from me next month, you'll know why. On the other hand, I might spend time here just to unwind from trying to write so much. Who knows?

Anyway, thanks.

You know, I've considered trying it this November! Except writing non-fiction instead of fiction. But I may give up and write faniction instead

I think I'm going to try it. I signed up for it, anyway, hehe.

I just joined a writing group at work, and several of us will be going for it, supporting each other as we go. I used to write a lot, but have been in a big slump for the past several years. It'll be like jumping from the hot tub into cruel Arctic waters, and I'm absolutely terrified, since I haven't so much as finished a short story in years. Should be fun!

Ha, ha, that's how I feel: terrified. How cool it must be to have a writing group at work, though! I can't imagine that.

I have a friend in Iowa who said he'd try it, too, so I'll have to check to see if he's really going to do it. Meanwhile, I think I'll try to get signed up this coming weekend.

Good luck to all who are trying it! I think in November we should start another thread and post our progress or lack thereof or general insanity or whatever. What do you think?

Sounds good. I think there's also a way to sort of "friend" people or something at the official website, but I haven't really looked at all that stuff yet. I'm using the same screen name there as here.
