you know... a box of latex gloves at the drug store isn't horribly expensive. And I think they're a great idea for anything involving glue or hot peppers.

you know...... That's not where I was going with that, but it gave me right chuckle. It's true. 'less you're alergic, or someone else is... then trouble.
anyway...

So now the trick-or-treating is done. I hope everyone got some nice treats, and not too many tricks... 'less you were out looking for tricks, then we get back to the latex being your friend.

Next Holiday: Here in the US we have the upcoming "Thanksgiving" wherein we're supposed to recall the things in our lives that we're thankful for.
I'm not going to get overly mushy, not that drunk, but I am thankful for all the good people here. The fine folk that haunt these two threads on a regular basis have kept me from dipping too far below the sanity line on more that a few occassions. Of course there's the occassional contribution to the dipping low too, but that's to be expected anywhere that you care about the people around you. So thanks to those that kicked me in the butt when I needed it, those that hoised a glass with me when I needed it, and those that extended a hand and pulled me from oblivion's gate when I needed it. to all of you.

What's the next big UK holiday? or Canadian Holiday? Do we have regulars from anywhere else?

I am going to make a coat, a Captain's coat, ala Captain Hook. But REALLY pretty and feminine. There was one in a shop that looked very much like my skirt, except in red and it was sooooooo pretty! I NEED one.

And, I might acquire a hat.

Remembrance day (AKA Armistice day or here in the states Veterans day) which in the US at least is being observed on the 10th. Dunno how big it is abroad actually. Here it's only a holiday for banks and the government. Canada of course has already had their thanksgiving and the UK just cellebrated Guy Fawkes day. After that I think it's just the religious observances that more or less coincide with the changing of the callender.

Same in Canada.

After that, there's nothing but Christmas. Well, technically, Solstice comes first by a few days, but Christmas is basically a big, co-opted Solstice party anyway.

yeah, we have Rememberence Sunday, but thats not a public holiday so much as an observance, than its christmas.

It occured to me that i don't know a single jewish person, so i've no idea when hanne... honn, their holiday is. Or even how to spell it.

Thats even with a synagogue ? somewhere in liverpool, and the fact that we get families of jewish and Hasidic(sp?) jews in the museum all the time. I think i live in the only cultural vacum in the wirral.

Did you know Daniel Craig (the new Bond) is from the wirral? yeah, he went to a school in Hilbre.

Why can i not find out about the presence of these guys BEFORE they leave and get all famous?

OOH! I had an idea last night about costumes for D*C next year.

Pirates was way fun, and I'd like to do it again, but I thought it'd be fun to have something else, a common theme we can all do. And I came up with this: Greek gods.

Everybody could pick a different deity. The costumes aren't that terribly hard. Toga, sandals. We could be our own Pantheon.

I could see TheRealMe being Zeus, with a lightning bolt. And LMD for some reason makes me think of Morpheus with his night blanket he drapes over the sky. I've always loved Athena, so I could get a helmet and an owl.

What do you all think?

I think it sounds like fun.

Being taurean and female i'd claim Venus, but how do you do Venus dressed? You'll have to put up a list of all the gods and goddesses, and i'll go off and find that 'new fashions in himations' page i found one time (tips and ideas for wearing of chitons and himations (the greek version of togas n whatnot) i know its around here somewhere.

I believe the court jester of Olympus was Bacchus. It involves a lot of wine, if that helps.

My patron Olympian is a woman (Athena). The only patron I have that looks vaguely like me (male, caucasian) is the Puck, and he's not welcome on Olympus after the "incident" with the shaved satyrs (which was totally Hermes' fault, but I digress).

I guess I could get on good terms with Hephaestos. . .

Yup. I have four patron spirits:
-Athena (goddess of wisdom/learning, invention, and strategy)
-Bastet (goddess of protection [especially of children] and cats [and thus, of the occult and being able to see/travel the Dark Places where others fear to tread])
-Coyote (the Trickster/Teacher/Guide, and another Walker-Among-Spirits)
-Puck (the Trickster, Mischief-maker, and Storyteller)

I am a modern man, a citizen of the world, and see no reason why I should be bound to a single pantheon.

But how about Demeter or Athena if I do Artemis? (But that would depend on me getting Ath to be Apollo. He doesn't like dressing up except for Halloween. And, it would be kind of ironic, vegetarian me dressing up as goddess of the hunt. lol.)

the three fates:
Clotho - spun the thread of life from her distaff onto her spindle. Her Roman equivalent was Nona, (the 'Ninth'), who was originally a goddess called upon in the ninth month of pregnancy.
Lachesis - measured the thread of life with her rod. Her Roman equivalent was Decima (the 'Tenth').
Atropos - was the cutter of the thread of life. She chose the manner of a person's death. When she cut the thread with "her abhorrèd shears", someone on Earth died.

My first brush with religiosity came after reading the Odyssey so naturally enough I chose Athena as well; she's the only one of the whole bunch that doesn't come off as a total twit. Later in life though I must admit that I've been a more faithfull devotee of Dionysus the god of getting drunk and going to the theater.

As for Aphrodite, i think what made me squeek is that as well as romantic love it said she was the goddess of fertility and intercourse.

So how are you meant to incorporate that into a costume? (I vote for ignoring that element entirely and slapping anyone who brings it up in a comically priggish manner)

Anyway, moving swiftly on, looking for those tips pages, will post them shortly.

Clotho was the one I was thinking of. Usually she's depicted as a young woman, Lachesis as being middle aged, and Atropos as being an old woman. (Where we get the word "atrophy" from, btw.)

She'd be easy. Carry arround a spindle or a rod and reel.

There are so many interesting goddess to choose from, though. When you get a minute, peak around!

I'm glad everyone seems to like my idea. I've always been interested in mythology and went through a phase when I was younger when I was obsessed with Greek mythology. So interesting!

No, he's a king, it's in the job description. Just one of the things about being a King, for most people putting it about is frowned on, for Kings it's not only expected but encouraged.

Least he didn't chop his wifes head off so he could remarry.

As for Ares:
"The son of ZEUS and HERA, he turned out to be a swaggering bully boy and yobbo God. He had the hots for APHRODITE and even after being caught in a net by HEPHAESTUS in full flagrante delicto this did not diminish his adulterous activities. The only thing he enjoyed more was war." Though I doubt Aphrodite would touch me with someone elses colloseum...

More insane ramblings by the people who brought you beeeer milkshakes!
No one can see their reflection in running water. It is only in still water that we can see.

CALLMESERENITY

PLEASE! Stop with the self deprecation! She was the goddess of sex, it's her MO!

And have you ever SEEN Hephaestus? Not very good looking, and lame in one leg. No wonder Aphrodite had a wandering eye. (Not that I condone cheating!)

I think you'd stand a pretty good chance.

CYBERSNARK

Hephaestos: high school geek. Smart and inventive, but not winning any beauty prizes.

Aphrodite: high school cheerleader. Beautiful, sexy, and not too bright.

The Norse knew these three as the Norns, Urd (the oldest), Beldandy (or Verdande, the middle child), and Skuld (the youngest). They've appeared under those names in an anime series called Ah! My Goddess (or Oh My Goddess, depending on how old your copy might be), which might serve as cosplay inspiration:

Here they are in casual-wear:

And here are some variant outfits:

I couldn't find a good pic of all three in their "normal" garb (lot of Beldandy, not so much the other two), but some searching should turn something up.

It's as simple as that

Roll me up and breathe me in
Come to my madness
My opium den
Come to my madness
Make sense of it again."
