I don't know if I have the authority to do this but I'm doing it anyway. The old thread was getting too long.

Hey, Whim. Anyone of the Imponder-ers can start a new thread, but I like to wait until at least 100 posts. And when we do a new post, it's nice to put a link to the previous one in your first post, and put a post in the old thread pointing the way top this one. I'll do that now:

When I grow up, I wanna start an Imponderable thread.

Here goes folks. BabySis and GND may be leaving tomorrow for a short vacation at her grandparents in Cali. They weren't supposed to leave until Thursday but there may be change in plans. DANG!
Just thought I'd put that out there.

Ah, the imponderables. I'm never sure where to look for us anymore...General Discussions or Talk Story.

I don't have enough time to catch up, so... hi everyone! I've missed you.

Personal quote? Oddly, it's an Emerson.

"Finish each day and be done with it;
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can.
Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense."

Oooh, missed the personal quote thing!

Being an English Litt grad and a pretentious, bookish type I should go with something obscure, philosophical and weighty from a famous author. Someone medieval, or possibly 19th century.

But since I haven't found anything that applies my life motto comes from a song by Dido.

Quote:

If my life is for rent
And I don't learn to buy
Well I deserve nothing more than I get
'cuz nothing I have is truly mine

I first heard those words when I was going through a really horrible time in my life. It jolted me into making some serious changes. I even wrote the words in my work diary so I could look at them when I needed reminding why I was going through so much crap to change things. Now whenever I hear that song it always makes me smile - even last week when I felt very crappy and sorry for myself!

Too many to even remember... here's the first four that came to my mind:

"Men are haunted by the vastness of eternity. And so we ask ourselves: will our actions echo across the centuries? Will strangers hear our names long after we are gone, and wonder who we were, how bravely we fought, how fiercely we loved?" - Odysseus

"When one has made a decision to kill a person, even if it will be very difficult to succeed by advancing straight ahead, it will not do to think about doing it in a long, roundabout way. One's heart may slacken, he may miss his chance, and by and large there will be no success. The Way of the Samurai is one of immediacy, and it is best to dash in headlong." - Yamamoto Tsunetomo

"Have no heart for approaching the path of love." - Shinmen Musashi

"As long as there is man, there will be war." - Albert Einstein

On the reverse side, it was actually recommended to me to read the Kama Sutra as a book pertaining to strategy. All is fair in love and war, because apparently, they share the same fundamentals.

evenin' Imponderables.

As a quotation that I try to at least live by, the new one in my tagline just about says it all

from the last thread:

CMH - on the question of feeling jealousy and/or rage and/or killing thoughts, I am completely with you on that one. I have actually though about the details of how I would go about torturing and killing a person based on the forensic shows I have seen. I am trying to do away with my jealousy presently, because it causes way too many issues for me. So far I haven't acted on the killing/torture thoughts though. So far. I think it is natural to have the thoughts and the person who told you to ignore/get rid of them, well, I would have some not-nice things to say about them that I will not subject y'all to.

As for my book collection, it is nowhere near what I want it to be. I am like a kid in a candy store when I go into a bookstore, but I never act on it because I know that I will not have the time to devote to reading the books I want to.

Truer perhaps than one might imagine. Pursuit and conquest, plotting and evasion, surrender and submission: the Battle of the Sexes. Politics and strange bedfellows. Yin and Yang. Kama Sutra as strategy, huh? Hmm. Seems more like a tactical manual to me. Tantric Sex would be more of a strategic view...

I'd say it's actually a culmination of strategical, operational and tactical. In that essence, it's a book on the grand strategy of romance, that is to say, it outlines the grand strategies of sexual conquest, short-term flings, and long-term relationships.

These being the grand strategies, it goes on to detail the points of lesser/operational strategy:

Identifying potential targets by body type and/or mentality, depending on your grand strategy.

Reconnoiter, standard S.A.L.U.T.E. format. A couple of these could reveal strategic gold; a pattern.

Target acquisition, make a final decision. Next two phases are optional and require discernment,

Scope potential allies to gather intelligence and aid you in the Operational phase (friends, family). Consider employment of spies. Match personal observations to background intelligence.

Of course, all of this could take anywhere from a long damn time to a couple of seconds, depending on your grand strategy.

You move on to the Operations, put yourself in the right place at the right time with the right equipment (dress, cologne, hair, money), maybe more than once. Utilize any beneficial allied relations, if there are any. Perform multiple engagements if necessary, but refrain from protracted warfare.

Tactical strategy: know where to look (Eyes, not chest), how to act (Stop fidgeting!), and what to say beforehand ("Nice dress", not "nice rack"). Battle gaming (practicing) is not ill-advised.

Tactics, employment of tactical strategy, and ability to re-act to the unexpected (Oh, you already have a boyfriend? Oh, you want to go out right now? Oh, you're a trans-sexual?) intelligently and with as little incident as possible. Knowing when, where and how to break contact.

Good hunting, soldier.

Damn, son, you sound like you should have the enemy crawling all over you. I don't get it. Basic problem must target acquisition, that is, finding the worthy opponent rather than a bunch of expendable cannon fodder.

Didn't realize how deep the Sutra got into the strategies that much--never got past the pictures myself--but, not having a whit of military knowledge, the operational aspect espcaped me entirely. Yet it all seems viable when put like that, doesn't it? Who's your favorite Firefly female character? I asking because what might seem obvious isn't always.

EDIT: Scary, isn't it, NVG. Might be something in the way this younger generation gets things done...

At the risk of leading my Firefly family to think I am completely obsessed with all things sexual, I want to chime in here with a counter-example or two, either to prove the rule or the exception.

In my gut I completely agree that as long as the thoughts don't become reality, all is well. Just some "harmless" internal venting. But not eveyone has the ability to draw the line so clearly between what's in my mind and what outside. I guess it's the now and then quality as opposed to the obsession that I'm referring to. The vengence angle of Columbine comes to mind as one example and of course all the subsequent incidents.

My second example is the one that prompted my disclaimer. How far removed is the pornography addict from the rapist? How many serial killers had seriously messed up sex thoughts before acting out their fantasies and then their meticulously planned murders?

Actually, CMH and myself are pretty much the same age. But I never thought that the tactics were interchangeable. Needless to say, they are the same. But I guess thats what happens to those of us who are just shooters. No need to make decisions, just shoot.

I always liked outwardly strong and elegant women. But they all seem fitting in Happy Land. Well, except for maybe YoSafBridge. I ain't one to strike a woman, but there are always exceptions to the rule. She might be it.

Before you guys get all up in praises about the breakdown of things, let me just say, I've never put any of it in to practice. In all likelihood, I'd probably fail, because I lack the most vital equipment: looks. It'd be like engaging in battle without a weapon. I've memorized a good deal of romantic poetry and other crap... hmm, you might even compare me to Cyrano de Bergerac in that regard, or you could just call me an Armchair Romantic. But I hear people giving advice on relationships emphasize lots of individual parts all the time. Like true strategy, I'm just guessing success relies more on proper employment of everything.

I actually picked out an unillustrated version of the kama-sutra, very specifically, to avoid those pictures. Also skipped the section on sexual positions. That's a little too "tactical" for me. But yes, the book suggests you to have a clear idea of what you want before you begin looking, and then what to look for based on what you want. After that, it spider webs down into different paths. You don't take the time to get to know relatives and friends of a person you're just trying to get in to bed. Likewise, you don't act overly intimate with a potential wife/long term companion. It also give several different body types for men and women, suggesting what's compatible and what's not, and the same with personalities.

It's a very in depth book, but I trailed off once it got into foreplay techniques.

Anyways, JQ, my favorite female character is River without a doubt. I got a knot in my throat the first time I saw her, and I can recall the exact place and circumstances. I don't know what it is... but my past two girlfriends were bat-shit insane, and I seem to be attracted to that for some reason.

What about you? Any female member of the crew that you find particularly interesting?

I don't have any quotes that I live by but here are some of my favorites.

"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."
H.P. Lovecraft - The Call of Cthulhu

"I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason, and intellect has intended us to forgo their use."
Galileo Galilei

"For with much wisdom comes much sorrow; the more knowledge, the more grief."
Ecclesiastes 1:18 (N.I.V.)

"Only two things are infinite - the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not so sure about the universe."
Albert Einstein

I've actually been compared to freckin Nick Cage on more occasions than I'd like to remember. Anyways, the picture's not very accurate. My hairline's off, I got crooked teeth, and the scar... it's not a pretty sight. I've suffered too much trauma to the head to come out looking pretty. It's not upsetting or anything, just the way things turned out.

Tristan - Mmm, wasn't meaning that to be funny, but you're not the first one to laugh at that analogy. I don't take offense to it or nothing, I guess it is ridiculous to compare everything in life to war. But really, war is just an extension of politics, and politics are (in theory) the process of solving conflicts and problems. The Kanji for "Bu" translates to "War" or "Martial", but it is made up of two separate kanji, "Tomeru" which can mean "Prevent" or "Solve", and "Hoko" which means "Conflict". I suppose I'm getting a little too philosophical and moving away from logic... but that's my opinion of warfare. It is a means to solving problems, and can be applied to any problem you have.

EDIT: Eh, and now I'm realizing you were referring to the post in it's entirety, and not just the opening line. Yeah, I threw some jokes in there. I still take the overall strategic approach seriously, though. Anyone who's actually read the kama-sutra outside of sexual positions should recognize the things I highlighted from it.

Lots of fiction in cluding Dickens, Austen, the 3 Bronte sisters, plays from Shakespeare to Pinter to Chekov, poetry & prose and lots of text books, mainly on history, theology, spiritual and drama/acting or photography... I keep all my theatre programs, travel books/guides... and some sci-fi novels and collectors books... but they are all in storage at the moment...

I think trust and love have an element of risk to them - when you really love someone you don't expect them to hurt you, but you usually invest so much of yourself in them that you are unintentionally hurt from time to time... it is how you deal with these situations and whether you grow from them and therefor have a stronger relationship or just keep muddling through with a few more 'weak points' in there, that makes or breaks a relationship IMO... But there are people who know what will ultimately happen to them as they repeat behaviour or put up with repeated behaviour - I think whey you are emotionally involved with someone you rarely use your head alone to make decisions so you are at risk of loving someone who will ultimately hurt you... I'd like to think I wouldn't - but I honestly don't know - I have ended relationships for lack of trust or inappropriate behaviour, but I'm not certain that I was ever really in love with those particular men... so... I'm not sure...

I think there was something else - sorry for what I've missed!

Hi NVG!! I have my fingers crossed for you Honey! Maybe she'll spill the beans to baby sis? (oh hang on - that could be dangerous...) But ... go you!!!! And let us know - those of us in the queue (yeah - it goes all the way to Australia...) want to move up a little.. OK?

Thank you Tristan It was an intense experience... but I came out of it wondering if this man and his family can live without hating... what excuse do I have?

Uh... RIMG - I adore your hat - I know I said it before, but I think it is worth saying again!!

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

I would go on a whole ramble about Tantra, but I think I explained some of the basics as well as I could last time I talked about spirit and sex, so I just won't.
I have kind of a ponderable; is there anything someone can do, in your first interaction with them, that just triggers a bit of a "You're dead to me" response? I've had it happen a few times, just wondered who here had a similar thing, and whether it depended on gender at all.

I'm pretty open minded and non-judgmental. I can't recall a "first interaction with them, that just triggers a bit of a 'You're dead to me' response?" I try not to make snap decisions about people. The one characteristic that I can think of that would probably give me that reaction is intentional cruelty. I don't like to be around anyone that is viciously mean to others.

You're implying that I, Christopher Sean Moorhead, have a gift for saying just the wrong thing? Surely, you jest.

Can you feel the sarcasm yet? Can you cut it with a butter knife, put it in your mouth and say, "Mmmmmmmm, it's so bitter!"?

"No power in the 'verse can stop me!"

PhoenixRoseI have met people to whom I have taken ian instant and intense dislike mei mei... and I have had 'friends' who have beocme so self absorbed that for the health of my own mind and soul I have let them vanish from my concience... but I have never actually thought - 'you are dead to me', especially about someone I had not met before - I do not think I could care enough to 'mentally kill them' in my heart if you know what I mean?

VerseExplorer!! my US Kaylee-clone!! I had overlooked yur ponderance... I love quotes and although I don't think I have one that sums me up there are a few I have collected lately that I would love to share because they struck a chord with me:

"May you live all the days of your life"
- Jonathan Swift

"Do something. If it doesn't work, do something else. No idea is too crazy."
- Jim Hightower

"Don't ask for a light load, but rather ask for a strong back."
- Anonymous

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much."
- Hellen Keller

Actually my friends and I have a little joke about Helen Keller being found in so many quotation books... I had to include one of hers!!

And my favourite Emerson:

"Write it on your heart that every day is the best day of the year"
- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I'd love to see photos of your kitchen cupboards!!

sorry Chris... butter doesn't melt in my mouth...

awwwwww.... I was just... I mean... oh darn...

Did you see the bit towards the end where it recommends rubbing all kinds of insects on your wedding tackle to make it bigger? Yeah, like I'm going to sleep with a guy who's done *that!*

Well, there have been occasions where I've been put right off a person the first time I've met them. "You're dead to me" is a bit extreme (and I get that you didn't mean it to be!), but I have occasionally made a mental note to avoid someone. It usually has to be something pretty big to put me off so strongly.

Generally, I get along with most people, which makes my life a lot easier. I come accross people I don't particularly like, but who doesn't? And after many years of being a chronic attention seeking people pleaser I've learned not to worry if everyone doesn't like me either. People clash. It's a fact of life. It's no big deal.

But you guys like me, right?

Ignorant people, especially those who are completely convinced that their ignorant ways are correct, trigger this response in me. Gender is not an issue. I tend to do my best to ignore them.

Awwww, DTH, of course we like you!

RIMG, I agree completely; I think that's what has really put me off before, too.

And just to clarify, the "you're dead to me" thing basically meant that you don't give them any attention and act as though they don't exist unless you have to aknowledge them. It was the best way I could come up with to put it.

You're quire pretty in all the right ways, Browncoat. See yourself that way, not with so much of a critical eye.

People look at themselves in a mirror from the vantage point of about 12 inches, while most of the public sees us at a distance of some feet, in normal settings. It's easy to see how the close up view we see ourselves can make flaws stand out like a piece of lumber rather than a splinter.

I would take you in a womanly fashion, and make sure we both got everything there is to take out of it. And so would many of us out in the 'Verse. Stand tall and don't stop test driving those females, staying away from the batshite ones, if you can. :0)
