ok, under construction,

this is where we can put any snippets of information we come accross, post interesting images we find for otheres, and basically discuss trims. (we'll warn those as get freaked out by that kind of talk before it happens, promise!) for the plan (which was a really good one Serenity) of going to D*C dressed as various members of the greek pantheon.

ok, in this one, i'll keep an uptodate as possible record of all thie different gods and goddesses we can find/think of and who has snaffled them (not that we can't have duplicates, but the owners of the Hyatt wont be too happy at having the lobby destroyed by thunderbolts)

Ok, so Far

Athena - Goddess of War and Wisdom -

Hades - God of the underworld - Jadehand?

Artemis - Moon Goddess of the Hunt - Serenity

Apollo - Sun God, patron of Artists - Ath

Zeus - King of the Gods, (Thunderbolts and lightning, very, very frightening!) -

Hera - Queen of the Gods, protector of women - Seryn

Hermes - Messenger god, patron of travellers and theives wore winged sandals and helmet and carried staff - reserved for Cozen

Hestia - Goddes of hearth and home (most widely worshipped, and most level headed goddess!) - VerseExplorer

Hebe - Goddess of Youth

Aphrodite - goddess of love and sexuality (mostly naked in every pic i've seen!) - Hells Kitten

Eros - god of love, had those arrows that made people fall in love (man did that ever backfire)

Eris - goddess of spite and mischeif -

Demeter - goddess of crops and grain -

Persephone - Goddess of Spring and (unwilling) Queen of the Underworld - Magdalena

Hephaestus (however its spelt) - crippled god of fire and patron of craftsmen, married to Aphrodite (the poor sap) - Tristan

Ares - bad tempered and violent God of War, is knocking sandals with Aphrodite (who isn't?) - Citizen

Morpheus - God of Dreams (apparently the ultra realistic one where you find yourself naked at an office party? check the link below!) - LightmeDark

Phobetor - God of Nightmares (Morpheus's brother) -

Phantasos - God of Dreams "Particularly the surreal ones where you're flying over a lake of custard and seventeen giraffes blow raspberries at you." (i like that guy, he's funny) - Simonwho

ok, now i'm just going to start copying them whole 'cause that guys much funnier than me)

HYPNOS: HYPNOS is the God of Sleep, which he induces with purest opium smoked through a horn. Obviously the God of Hyppies. - RiverIsMyGoddess

Hecate - up until now she was just a name i used to scare away jehovas witnesses. Ok "Goddess of Hidden Wisdom, Change and Darkness" (Queen of Witches) - Mai? or LittleAlbatross

Keep letting me know guys, and i'll add to these little profiles as and when i can.

OK, now, I want to see piccies!

you're an absolute star, thank you sweetie!

Thats a brilliant list, cheers.

But it does make me wonder, are we limiting this to the actual deities? and what about the humans that were made into gods? (Heracles?)

Or do we just throw limits to the wind and let folk go as whoever they want? (that gets my vote)

Quote:

HERA: Mrs ZEUS. Supreme Greek Goddess and the Queen of Olympus.

She's also a Goddess of Marriage and Birth, which is somewhat ironic considering that her notoriously unfaithful husband ZEUS produced an incredible number of illicit offspring with an entire pantheon of lovely ladies.

If he wasn't liasing with LETO and LEDA, he was getting friendly with DANAE, THEMIS or MNEMOSYNE — all behind HERA's back. He used every trick in the book to mislead and divert her away from his affairs. See our entry on ECHO for an example.

Although as regal as they come, HERA is not the most Godly of Goddesses. She can be spiteful, vicious and extremely jealous, but who can blame her with all the carrying-on ZEUS did? Their arguments and fighting make Mount Olympus shake to its roots. And when HERA starts throwing the Holy Crockery you know it's time to make a rapid exit.

Even ZEUS is scared of his formidable wife. After seeing what she did to his illegitimate son HERACLES we can understand why. The one time he managed to get the better of her by force, by chaining her to a mountain with horrifically heavy weights, ZEUS didn't hear the end of the matter for centuries. No wonder he spends most of his time delayed at the office.

We have to admire HERA's strength and determination. She certainly gives as good as she gets. And if you're lucky enough to be in her good books, she can be wonderfully gracious and charming. But she's best avoided at parties unless you happen to be carrying a sacred pomegranate in your pocket.

Ok, i'm definetly going with Hera.

Seryn,
OK, I think I should be Hestia. "Hestia - Goddes of hearth and home (most widely worshipped, and most level headed goddess!)" Being one of the oldest Browncoats, I figure it's a role that best fits my age. Also, I'm an Earth Mother type.

"HESTIA: She's the Goddess of Hearths and Domesticity. With fire the only means of cooking and heating, she kindled a lot of respect. The Romans re-introduced her as Vesta. She had a festival called Vestalia on 7th June. At the festival there were ceremonies that were conducted by extra-special Vestal Virgins who had taken vows of chastity lasting thirty-nine years. (And after thirty-nine years we suspect they were not inclined to bother.)"

I hope everyone remembers to celebrate with me on June 7th, and Vestial Virgins can apply at www.vestialvirgins.com .

Don't forget Thanatos, servant of Hades, and god of Death (that's "death" the verb, not the noun. Hades is the ruler of the state of death, Thanatos is the one who gets you there. A Reaper).

There's also Charon, the ferryman (who must be freakin' rich by now).

Ahem - why would she be particularly fitting for Mai, Jadehand?

Well not by that discription. She's not a witch. Try this info...
"Hecate was the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, moon, ghosts and necromancy. She was the only child of the Titanes Perses and Asteria from whom she received her power over heaven, earth, and sea."

"Hekate was a torch-bearing goddess of the night, the leader of haunting ghosts and inspirer of the night-time baying of hounds. She may have been a goddess of the moon or rather of moonless starlit nights."
"The gods Hekate, Persephone and Haides presided over the oracles of the dead and the art of nekromankia (necromancy), the summoning forth of the ghosts of the dead."
"The Oracle of the Dead in Thesprotia was a shrine dedicated to the gods Haides and Persephone. Hekate was probably invoked as the mistress of ghosts in the rituals."
http://www.theoi.com/Gallery/T16.8.html
http://www.theoi.com/Gallery/T16.7.html
"HEKATE was the goddess of witchcraft, the night, the new moon, ghosts, necromancy and crossroads.

She did not have many public temples in the Greek world, although small household shrines, which were erected to ward off evil and the malevolent powers of witchcraft, were common. Her most important cults were those of Eleusis and the island of Samothrake, where she was worshipped as an associate-goddess of the Mysteries. "

There is that whole 'no weapon forged by man' thing that folks go on about - does that work on god? Cuz, y know, i'm pretty sure most of the slaves making the guns in all those factories are actually women and children.

Okies on Artemis and Apollo, so, i shall go off and amend accordingly.

And also, Stuarts dibs on Phantasos. We do regard that as a contract you know - we let you have him and you HAVE to come to D*C - if you don't there will be penalties.

Yes, Seryn, love, it's definitely time to get on the ball with this. Because you know what's going to happen: You and I are going to end up making most of the costumes. The sooner we get started, the better. Because you have an Elizabeth Swann costume to make and I have a pirate captain coat to make and 5,000 Jayne hats to knit and goodness knows what else. I should go as the Blind God, haha...sure, it's not Greek, but it is from my favorite books ;D (Heroes Die and Blade of Tyshalle). Of course, I have no earthly idea how I'd pull that one off. Hephaestus was always my favorite, but I don't think I'm keen on going as him (and it looks as though our dear Tristan has his eyes looking thusly).

I'll just look to find which Greek god most closely resembles the Blind God...could be a tall order, though, but it could be fun.

-edit- i'm down with a drink with a name as cool as styx...i've been thinking of going as Charon. Not a god, but pretty flippin' sweet nonetheless.

I'll get you updated when I've had time to play, New Years should be fun.

You are going to have to PM me and remind me how to make it, I am not sure if I was sober and I definitely don't remember the recipe.

Good luck on the Styx water too. I think it needs a purpleish color, maybe some Chambord?

ok, so frim yess's and no's?

Little Albatross - Hecate
Hells kitten - aphrodite
Tristan -Haiphestos
RIMG - Hypnos
Mai - ? (I still think you'd make a wonderful Gaia, then you can queen it over all the rest of us)

Theres should be plenty of idea coming up, i think we agree'd to stick to greek clothing. One think i was going to do was work out and post instructions on how to make simple tunics with braid edges - either out of flat or crinkle fabric (the greeks did have crinkle fabric) that the drapery can be worn over, or for the more confident theres just the chiton and what not.

but i'll get on to that at some point.

I spent the weekend doodling designs for a whole carnivale of gods - with all these vetnetian masque styles and touches of modern stuf, even punk hairdo's and stuff - but i looked at them afterwards and realised they went straight against Serenity's 'simple and easy' idea.

ah well.

I will be any god in which my Jayne hat will be considered 'proper attire'.

I'm hoping to go next year and if I do, you can count me in on this.

CALLMESERENITY

Hey, we can go wild and crazy if you want to. I just didn't want to freak people out by being complicated. Any guy can take a piece of cloth and make a toga and wear sandals.

I've been thinking about Artemis and I've decided I want to wear a pale blue or aqua chiton, that fastens at the shoulders and upper arms, but then falls open. Silver trimmings. And I want silver sandals, if I can find them, and a bow and quiver. And, maybe one of those bracelets that you wear on your upper arm. Silver and blue and a shiny, cuz I'm the goddess of the moon and all. And of course, some sort of silver crown thingy in my hair.

What do you think?

Oh, and I'm still trying to convince cozen to be Hermes, so put him down as a maybe!
