Oh God. I just found out about it right now.

Ladies and gentlemen, one fo the last few filmmaking legends is gone. Robert Altman, who has made too many amazing films to mention here, had died at 81. Here's the story at imdb.com.

Legendary director Robert Altman, whose films included M*A*S*H*, Nashville, The Player, and most recently The Prairie Home Companion, and who received five Oscar nominations during his long career, died Monday in Los Angeles at age 81. The announcement was made by his film company, Sandcastle 5 Productions today (Tuesday). The cause of death was not disclosed. Earlier this year, he received a lifetime achievement Oscar from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Accepting the award, Altman said, "No other filmmaker has gotten a better shake than I have. ... I've never had to direct a film I didn't choose or develop."

This really shocks and saddens me. As a film geek, it would be blasphemous not to have known and loved his movies. From his most well known stuff to the the lesser known films in his career (SECRET HONOR being my personal fave) and his most recent flicks. I loved PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION. I was even eager to see the next movie he planned, which was supposed to be about a group of people in one of those car giveway contests where they have their hands on the car and whoever stays the longest wins. Was suposed to have Hilary Swank and The Rock in it. I don't know if it'll be made now. Wouldn't be the same without Bob behind the camera.

In a way, this is a fitting end to his life. A few months ago, he won a Lifetime Achievement Award and made PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION, which fittingly was a movie about death and the end. His career was in a third wind, I guess. So it's a bit magical, but still a damn shame that he's gone.

"You may say, that I ain't free, but it don't worry me." That's a lyric from the final song in NASHVILLE. I loved that line because it encapsulated everything Altman was.

Who here mourns for the loss of this cinematic giant?

"We have five million Cybermen. How many are you?"
"Four"
You would destroy the Cybermen with four Daleks?"
"We would destroy the Cybermen with ONE Dalek. You are superior in only one respect."
"What is that?"
"You are better at dying."

Trash talk between a Cyberman and a Dalek. It doesn't get any better than that.
