Well, even if I don't go I'll be interested in a vest. Keep me posted. I saw the G36 sniper version, but there was a sweet looking one I saw too (i'll have to get the link). I plan on having the G36 as well as my main weapon and the sniper rifle slung over my back. Again, all this is tentative, I probably won't make a decision until after the first of the year.

I was also throwing around the idea, if you guys like it, of having certain people with different positions in the unit, like the Medic, but expand to include things like snipers, greaderes, machine gunners, etc. Their equipment would obviously change depending on their position (details to be discussed). Or go one farther and have things like cavalry (most likely air), heavy infantry, etc. Just some ideas. Also, any idea how we're going to differentiate rank? They didn't by chance, give rank insignia in the visual companion did they?

Oh, and it won't do a great job of keeping the beer cold, but I have a bunch of ammo bandoliers (we called the Beer-doliers) left over from my Army days. I could try and find them and bring them out. Here's a pic of them in action (that's not me in the pic, that's my buddy Flemming)

(edit: sorry didn't notice the pin-up girl behind him until after I posted it. Uploaded the edited pic)

RIMG, well, depending on how many of those bottles you brew, we may have to run several tests to see how many would fit in a bag...sounds like a really good excuse for a road trip!
I had also thought of something along the lines of a bunch of coozy's stagger-stitched together, kind of like a bandolier of beer bottles. It obviously needs some thinking through for practicality, so give me a bit of time on that.
As for the pattern, not a problem. As soon as I get one together that everyone likes, I'll make it available via email.
I should have one gun by the middle of next week, and one a little while after that. Should be fun!

And here comes BWTP to answer our needs! RIMG, that is something like I was talking about, but with a bit more concealability for the beer...

BWTP, I am not sure how many of us are going to be there. I think the idea of different MOS's is great, but I am also not sure of the rankings, etc. I think there is something in the Companion showing one of the ranks, but I'll have to check it again.

Concealability could be a concern. If you want, once I find one, I could mail it to you so you can use it as a basis for whatever you might design.

I forgot to mention, I know their rank had to be similar to what we use today (at least somewhere in the universe) because Jayne's 'Maidenhead shirt', the one that had all the patches on it had an upside down Sergeant First Class. Maybe that's what we could do, just use Army Rank flipped upside down? (Obviousyl wouldn't work for Specialist, and Officers rank might have to be worked on too)

BWTP, I love the bandoliers, and would send you some cashy money if you sent me a couple. I think they can be modified, or the beer can be kept really cold until it is time to load them up. Either way, I want a couple to play with.

I am clueless on rank (as a civilian I was supposed to learn the ones for the AF but I never really bothered to, though I do know that more bars is better) but I think it might be a good idea to have it, though I can see it causing problems as well with people not getting to be the rank they want to (though we can be completely unrealistic in the representation of the numbers, as if the officers were marching while the rest of the men stayed behind [more for the taunting of the 501st than anything]).

Wow, I am rambling. Better cut it off now.

Oh, and here's another thing...our Brigade numbers...on the deleted scene from the pilot that I ripped the screencaps from, Zoe mentioned the 76th as having "lost another four" or something like that. The 76th were also at Serenity Valley, and they were mentioned, so I thought perhaps we could take that as our own?
Thoughts or other ideas?

76th sounds good to me. Question is, what will we be? Mal was in the 'Overlanders" which, if you break the word down (over land) I'm guessing is their version of ground pounders, infantry. Would we use the same or take something else?

Though it isn't Mal and Zoe's unit, I think using the 76th would be good, as having a unit that was in (or eventually will be in) the Battle of Serenity would be good homage to our BDHs.

The sleeve knitting aspect as I mentioned earlier is easy, just time consuming.

So far I have 6 inches on one sleeve and I like the effect even without the adding metallic of mylar, I will post a pic soon, without the mylar to get opinions, the cord did not dye as dark as I had hoped but it does have a nice mottled silvery effect.

If you are making your own, expect to spend $3 on knitting needles, $5 ish on the cord, $2-3 on fabric dye, 50 cents or so on glue, and I am still tracking down mylar though it cant be that pricey. Total project material cost $15 give or take a few bucks for both sleeves.

I could put together a package perhaps with simple captain dummy speak directions on how to knit a sleeve. Complete with knitting needles, directions, and predyed cord? If there is enough interest I think this would be the most budget friendly way to do this, aka I could buy in bulk.

If I am knitting and selling the price would jump quite a bit because of the time involved. the one sleeve so far is 2 hours and I am not making it full length to my shoulder either.

Do any browncoats own a knitting machine?

Thank you for the update, ArtCat! I would be willing to give the "kit" a shot. We'll need to figure some way to attach the sleeves to the undershirt, though...staples, duct tape...no, something less drastic, maybe.

I am dying to see how it looks!

they could easily be attached with some easy sewing to an undershirt, I would suggest they attach to short sleeves as opposed to a tank top for comfort, while the cording is much more comfortable than chainmail it is bulky and would still be uncomfortable in an armpit.

I've posted a link to this thread a couple of places. I figured the more the merrier.

I can knit a little, also. Not very well, but if the mail pattern isn't too terrible, with the help of artcat's kit, I may be able to crank a few out for those that don't knit at all.

I should have pics of the prototype sleeve up tonight ( I got an additional 4" done on my lunchbreak) so yall can see the pattern, some alteration will still be done on the coloration of it I think.

Wricked wren basically what I am doing is knitting a row, then purling the next row, and just alternating between the two stitches.

The knit/purl combo I can do. I'm fairly decent at scarves, so sleeves aren't totally out of the realm of possibility. Plus I know other knitters that I may be able to conscript for a few sets, as well.

...sadly, the only knitting I've ever done is of my brow when I see words like "purling"...**sigh** I blame an education system that REQUIRED girls to learn sewing. I naturally, rebelled.
Perhaps I could haunt the local thrift shops for loosely-knit sweaters? By removing the arms (sleeves) (which I think I can do)...use of strategic dye, etc. it could work..couldn't it?

Ok, if we decide to go with the 76th Brigade, is there anyone in here with image skills? I mean to create a badge for us to wear on our 'uniforms'...something that can be easily made into a patch. I know nothing of this kind of thing, and would not even know how to go about getting them made...

Every nerd who's ever nerded his way through nerdville wants to be a sniper.

http://www.vgcats.com/comics/?strip_id=2

But if you're gonna do it, for Lord's sake, do it right and get someone to be your spotter.

Concerning ranks: I've seen them use both Navy and Army ranks in the show. Actually, I believe the head agent in "The Message" wore the rank of Colonel. I'm not sure about how the Alliance's military is set up, but that might suggest that their military is interchangeable with their law enforcement. Anyways, anyone who wants a quick run down of rank just use wikipedia. Navy and Army are what you'll most likely be using, since i don't ever recall the mention of a Gunnery Sargeant or an Airman in the show or the movie.

EDIT: Also, I'm going to suggest that you pre-determine units beneath the Brigade level. I have several ideas of my own, but you're going to have to work around the fact that we really will not have a Brigade sized unit, so we may just have to skip a few levels like Battalion and Company. Technically speaking, before a Brigade that was short staffed was officially downsized, this would just mean that 1st Platoon, A-CO 1/76th could exist, just in the size of a squad or a small Platoon. Anyways, like I said, I have ideas of my own, but I'd at least urge someone (Tristan?) to make something official on the matter.

Evening, all.

ArtCat, that is very, very shiny! Wow, that looks good! Just....wow.

Sister, I like that idea. The number 76 superimposed on the Chinese symbol for brigade...I'm thinking in a square to be different from the Independent's patch.

And BWTP is already working on one....never mind the above...

CMH, my knowledge of the modern military hierarchy is about on par with ignorance. I would defer to you and other military individuals in this case. Please. I have no idea....

Oh, I took a few hours of my own tonight and started playing with the vests. I took the stripe pattern on this one from Mal's in The Message...screen-by-screen, and this is the closest I can come up with. I have also noticed at least two different types of vests (to add to the confusion)...the type Mal wears, with the horizontal and vertical stripes, and the type Tracey wears, with just the horizontal stripes (Zoe also has this type on in the deleted scene in the piot episode...am I taking this a bit too far?) This leads me to believe that the vests might also indicate rank...not sure how, though...again, I may be over-thinking this just a wee bit.
The one I stitched and pinned together tonight is of the horizontal and vertical striped variety. I'd like to stick to just one type for all of us involved, so I'd like to call for a vote on this. Y'all let me know.

Submitted for your approval, I give you two working designs.

My favorite of the two:

And the second:

As I said, there is no Chinese character for Brigade, that's Battalion, but a Brigade is a huge element anyway, usually comprised of 2-4 Battalions. Way I figure it, we could be a Battalion under the 57th Overlander Brigade.

Nice design for the vest Tristan.

I found a place, and it's about $190.00 for 100 (100 being the minimum we can buy). And that's for basic (i.e. no iron on backings, no metalic thread, etc). That makes it a $1.90 a patch, which isn't too bad. But are there 100 people that want them?

If not, I'm sure we could bring extras with and sell them there. It's something to think about.

BWTP, thank you for finding a place, too. I have no problem putting up a large chunk of that, if there are a few other people interested in doing so as well. It may take me a few weeks to get $100.00 or so together, but it's a possibility. If nothing else, we get an order of 100, split it amongst the intial investors, and sell them as we go. As you are the contact, BWTP, would it be better for you to arrange al this, and get the money from those interested?

I'll open correspondence with the company and work out the actual price. $190 is worst case I'm thinking, I might be able to get it as low as $150. The numbers I'm running off of are estimates.

Once I've talked with them about it, and we decide on a patch, I'll place the order and those that want to make an initial investment can send me the money and I'll send you a chunk of the patches to do with as you please. Then if anyone else wants any they can contact one of us.

Once I get details I'll let you know. But I might not get anything until a design is decided upon.

Well, I went ahead and sent and inquiry with the hexagon shaped patch, but it's a free estimate and there's no obligation to use it. I figure it'll be good to guestimate what it's actually going to cost.

Details of the estimate request:

75% embroidery - meaning the edge and the design in the center will be embroidered, the green area will be the cloth.

3" - The size of my unit patch from the army that's the same shape.

Standard backing - I figure it'll be MUCH cheaper to just sew them on ourselves or have a tailor do it than pay and extra $3 per patch for iron on.

BWTP - The patches look good, I think I prefer the oval to the hexagon. When you find out more, I might be interested in helping to finance.

Howdy all!

In speaking with my husband about how we could contribute to the Fightin' Independents, we've decided to offer up some special lanyards for your badges during the parade (they're so picky about making you where them EVERYWHERE). We'd like to make some that say "THE 76TH BRIGADE" on the left side (as your looking at it), and some other phrase on the right...WE ARE TOO PRETTY TO DIE, REMEMBER SERENITY VALLEY, WE WILL HOLD THE LINE...something like that. *shrug* Haven't really hashed it out completely yet.

If ya'll think you might like to add these to the uniform, let us know. We can all work together on a common phrase.

Neither of us will be in costume or the parade, but we're more than happy to back ya'll up. Oh, and if anyone is interested, hubby has done chainmail in the past and would be most happy to pass on any knowledge that he may have, should anyone feel like undertaking actual mail.

Edit: These would be limited edition lanyards. Only those actually in the parade would be able to buy them. Cheers!

I was looking through the screen caps, and I'm thinking the brown stripes on the vest denote rank. If you look at Tracy (Private) he only has two horizontal stripes, while Zoe (Corporal), though it changes between two scenes, has either three horizontal stripes or three horizontal stripes with vertical ones joining them. Just an observation, I could be way off.

That sounds great. Now I'm going to have to bust my ass and make it there. I've helped design a patch and you're making cool lanyards. I gotta start saving now.

I'm taking a very basic class on it now and I want to make some, but I don't know if it's going to cover sleeves or not. If your husband has any instructions/suggestions on sleeves it would be greatly appreciated.
