CYBERSNARK

I'm being fleeced here. My monthly Cable bill just came in and I'm paying over $100 for service that I don't want.

I'll admit, I might be a luddite. I don't want digital cable (since my TV isn't digital anyway, there's no difference in quality for what I watch, and I'm sure as Hell not paying for a new set, 'cause this one's only a couple of years old). I don't want Pay-Per-View presets. I don't really care about having an onscreen guide, or multiple time-shifted channels, or a DTV (or satellite) box crammed onto my TV shelf, or the option to buy another $300 piece of hardware (and $500 installation) to replace my perfectly good VCR.

All I want is (A) to be able to turn on my TV and watch my favourite shows, and (B) to be able to RECORD shows that happen to be on another channel at the same time (or when I'm out of the apartment, actually studying/working). In every other apartment in every other city I've ever lived in, it was easy enough to get cable piped through that little cable that comes out of my wall, into my VCR and from there to my TV.

Yet the only options in the Independent Republic of Toronto (pretty much a different country, from what I've seen) all appear to be digital cable packages that require at least two different pieces of hardware (one to receive the digital signals and another to actually be able to record stuff) and specialized installation (by the least highly-trained of non-english-speaking employees).

I'm going to f&$king Film School! I'm planning to work in TV! This is a dream for me! I don't want to choose between shows that I both like, and have to wait for DVD box sets to see what everyone's talking about, and I don't want to resort to downloading as my primary means of TV watching (on a small screen, while sitting on an office chair).

I'm asking all TO Browncoats: do I have any options at all here, other than chucking everything and watching torrents or plunking down more money that can't be spent on tuition or food?

Well that seems odd. I have basic cable with Rogers and I'm not using a digital box but looking at their website today it looks like they no longer offer anything without a box. (And the list of available channels seems a lot smaller.) Have you tried calling them up and asking them about service without a box? Depending on your location and what you want to receive an antenna would still pick up a fair number of channels.

Welcome to Toronto...

Honestly I don't think I can help that much for I have Digital Cable (yes I am shallow). I think the wisest thing to do would just be to call around different cable companies, somebody must have something. Sorry I can't really be of more help but good luck all the same.

Some things, man just wasn't meant to know, like how Wayne Static does his hair... It's the Devil's hair gel I tells you!
