Help! Firefly-inspired Recipes Needed For My First Shindig!

Folks, I'm planning a house-warming/Firefly-themed shindig to celebrate my new home and to introduce my un-initiated friends to Firefly.

I'm thinking Chinese lanterns, candles, tea... strawberries, of course. But what about other food? Anyone have any good ideas for dishes or drinks that relate to the show?

And do you guys think I should show just the movie? Or a few episodes? Maybe the Pilot and two others? Which ones would you suggest?

A while back, a bunch of us were posting recipes on the board, and Kaele posted this one. Hope it helps!

Fruity Oaty Bars

Ingredients:
1 cup unsalted butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup flour
1/2 salt
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup oats
1/2 cup raisins
1/2 cup dried cranberries
1/2 cup dried cherries

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350F.
Grease a 9- by 13- inch pan.
Cream butter and sugars together.
Beat in eggs and vanilla.
Add flour, salt and baking soda.
Stir in oats and fruits.
Spread in the prepared pan.
Bake in preheated oven 30 minutes.
Cool slightly and cut into 32 bars.

Oh, and by the way, I'd suggest showing "War Stories" or "Shindig". Besides being some of my favorites, I think they're fun episodes that anyone could like.

1. My suggestion. Start with the two-hour pilot episode. I think it is good to start in the beginning when possible. And then the Train Job. Joss put then in order for us.

2. Hot Cheese. Some drink you can call Mudders's Milk. Mystery dip. You can say somebody pulled the labels off the cans...so you aren't sure what is in it. Like a bean dip. Have a can with label pulled off nearby. Sliced tomatoes. Chocolate cake. Or at least you made it taste a chocolately as possible.

3. Centerpiece for table. The Serenity Collector's Edition DVD box. When you open it, you can make it stand up in a triangle. One side River. One side Mal and Serenity. One side the back cover. If you got the Dark Horse Serenity Ornament, that will look great too.

How about some fresh Bao?


Char Siu Bao - Chinese Steamed Pork Buns
Yields 24 steamed pork buns.
INGREDIENTS:
2 tablespoons oil
1 scallion, chopped fine
1 clove garlic, chopped fine
1/2 pound barbecued pork cut into small cubes
2 tablespoons light soy sauce
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch, dissolved in 2 tablespoons water or chicken stock
PREPARATION:
Follow Basic Bun recipe through step 3 (preparing the dough and letting it rest).

Heat 2 tablespoons oil in wok. Stir fry scallion and garlic 30 seconds.
Add pork. Stir fry 1 minute. Add soy sauce, oyster sauce, and sugar.

Pour in dissolved cornstarch. Stir fry quickly until pork is glazed. Remove to bowl and allow to cool.

On a floured board, knead dough 1 minute and roll into one long, sausage-like roll 2 inches in diameter.

Slice the roll crosswise into 1 inch pieces.

Flatten each piece with the palm of your hand and roll with rolling pin into 3 inch rounds.

Place 2 tablespoons of filling in center of each round.

Gather dough up around the filling by pleating along the edges.

Bring the pleats up and twist securely and firmly.

Place each bun on 2 inch square of aluminum foil on steamer tray. Cover with a towel. Let rise 1 hour, until dough springs back when touched with finger. Remove towel.

Steam over briskly boiling water 10 minutes.

May be prepared in advance. May be frozen. Thaw out in plastic bag and resteam 10 minutes.

Steamed Bun Dough
INGREDIENTS:
1 package dried yeast or 1 cake fresh yeast
1 cup lukewarm water
4 1/2 cups flour
1/4 cup sugar
2 tablespoons Crisco or vegetable oil
1/2 cup boiling water
2 tablespoons sesame seed oil
PREPARATION:
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water. Add 1 cup of flour. Mix thoroughly. Cover with cloth. Let rise 1 hour, until bubbles appear.

Dissolve sugar and vegetable oil in 1/2 cup boiling water. Stir well.
Cool until lukewarm. Pour into yeast mixture. Add 3 1/2 cups flour.

Knead dough on lightly floured board until smooth. Put into extra large, greased bowl in a warm place. Cover with damp cloth. Let rise until double in bulk, about 2 hours.

Divide into 2 portions. Remove first portion and knead 2 minutes. Repeat with second. Roll each into roll 12 inches long and 2 inches wide. Cut into 12 pieces (24 total).

Flatten each piece with palm of hand. Roll with rolling pin into 3 inch circles.
Brush with sesame seed oil. Indent middle of circle with chopstick. Fold circle in half so that it becomes a half moon. Crimp edges tightly with fork.

Place each roll on separate square piece of foil on steamer tray. Cover tray with towel. Let buns rise to double in bulk, about 30 minutes. Remove towel.

Steam, tightly covered, over briskly boiling water for 10 minutes. Serve with Peking Duck, Crispy Duck, or with any filling you desire. May be prepared in advance. May be frozen. Thaw out in plastic bag and re-steam 10 minutes.

In the town Canton the man Kessler wasn't rich by any means. He moved quite a bit of contraband but never filched any of what he moved. Recently he got his hands on an ice cream machine lifted from a core world. Certainly almost useless on the rim, he had hoped to find a core-world contact to buy it. After Kessler's untimely demise the machine became the property of the Canton Tavern to pay off his drinking debt. It was put to good use.

1 cup (240 ml) Cream, rich, well chilled
1 cup (240 ml) Milk, well chilled
2-4 packets Carnation® Instant Breakfast, dark chocolate
4 cups (1 liter) Chocolate Ice Cream (from the Canton Tavern)
3-4 shots (90-120 ml) Bailey's® Original Irish Cream, well chilled
3-4 shots (90-120 ml) Starbucks® Coffee Liqueur, regular, well chilled
3-4 shots (90-120 ml) DeKuyper® Creme De Cacao, well chilled
Whipped Cream or Whipped Topping
8 dark roasted Coffee Beans, rough ground
1 oz grated Dark Chocolate

chilled blender
chilled thick serving mugs

Notes on ice cream: Select a chocolate ice cream with predominately chocolate flavor, avoiding mint, nuts, chocolate chunks, etc. Ice cream should be brought out of the freezer for about 10 minutes to soften slightly to make the blending easier.

1. Add Cream, Milk, and Breakfast Drink to blender. Whip for five seconds to combine powdered drink.

2. Add Ice Cream in fourths, blending well between each addition. Add three alcohols and whip for ten seconds.

3. Serve in chilled mugs topped with a dab of Whipped Cream and a dusting of ground Dark Chocolate and Coffee.

To make a Virgin Mudder omit alcohol.

How fun! And WOW! Great recipes...i'm gonna buy that recipe book!!!

1. you can decorate your fancy drinks with cute little Kaylee Umbrellas

2. should have cutlery and chopsticks

3. when you bake those oaty bars...you can wrap them in foil and print the labels on a color printer :0)

4. fresh berries in a simple basket lined with a pretty pink napkin

5. you'll need cheap jug wine --- distilled using an engine of some sort

6. you can get inexpensive decorations at a local asian grocery if you have one. they sell fans, dipping sauce dishes, rice bowls (most for under a $1 each) chopsticks, and those fun little dresses that are wine bottle covers...

7. if you can find music to play in the background that is a good mix of "world music"

wow...i need to throw my own party...only wish i could invite all of you...no one around here would come...not yet. working on converting folks!!!!

Most of my food ideas have been covered --
'cause you're all so smart!

But I wouldn't call War Stories a party episode unless you're celebrating October 31 and serving un-set cherry Jell-O, among the other dainties.

Why not (along with the pilot, which is a pure necessity) Our Mrs. Reynolds? It's full of tasty lines, character delineation, and even some of the mentioned food.

I agree with FloralBunny, Our Mrs. Reynolds is always a good party epi.

You could have some mulled wine (a wassail recipe would work nicely). But beware of women bearing hats made from trees.

The bao recipe is a good one. We made it for one shindig and it was a big hit.

I've also made "ice planets" using cream cheese & crushed pineapple mixed up and rolled in coconut.

I once made a very tall cake that resembled Simon's birthday cake from Out of Gas. Even put emergency candles in the top. But I'll warn you that cuttint it is problematic. I would recommend running skewers from top to bottom before you cut into it or it will collapse. ** After the cake collapse, it occurred to me that they never show the cake being cut on the show. Hmmmmm **

Hot cheese dip was suggested. I made beer cheese dip and served it in a little crock to keep it hot.

The men in Shindig were feeding Kaylee chocolates in little gold foil wrappers. Herhsey makes Nuggets in gold wrappers. There may be other gold-wrapped chocolate but those were the ones I found.

The last show-themed food I've made was a basket of fresh baked rolls from my favorite scene where they're all sitting around the table and River steals Jayne's bread.

Maybe you could serve some "Ng Ka Py" (medicinal herb wine) which Mal orders in 'The Train Job'.

(In the Firefly Chinese translations I've seen it's "Ng Ka Pei" but I guess that's wrong. So if you want to look for some use the first spelling. Searches confirm this.)

Sliced tomatoes rolls and and beef tips ( call them protein cubes) thats what they had in the Pilot show. Show the 2 hour Pilot it's been the best way I have found to hook people on the show the movie just leaves out to much for the non-Browncoats. Go to the dollar store and get a few Dinosaurs ( they will get the Dinosaurs after the Pilot) for the table and hang some stars above the table and if you have it a model of Serenity.
