My favourite western is Westworld, however, that's probably more properly classified as sci-fi, so with that out, it's either The Quick & The Dead, or High Plains Drifter.

Important people don't do field work.

I'm torn here...But, I'm going to have to go with "Red River" with John Wayne and Montgomery Clift.

Of course, TGTBATU is in there, along with "The Fastest Gun Alive", "Tombstone", "3:10 to Yuma" (Remake), "True Grit", "Fort Apache", "Hang em High", and parts of "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" mostly the scenes with Wayne in them however. Ford let the ropes up a little on that one to ill effect, I think.

While I can't say it's my all time favorite I'll toss Silverado into the mix because no one else has mentioned it. Great cast and the movie transitions from silly to deadly serious as well as any film I've ever seen.

1. Little Big Man - big sweeping movie that was more human and honest about the tragedies of our history than most westerns up to that point. And it still had plenty of humor.

Very good movie and it launched Kevin Costner's career after being totally cut out of "The Big Chill".

I love it as he backs out of the saloon door (on a corner)and gets the bad guys, one on each side of the building.

I am a huge Sergio Leone fan.My personal favorite is Duck You Sucker!(not as stupid as it sounds).I love The Man With No Name Trilogy,especially The Good,The Bad,and The Ugly.Once Upon A Time In the West is also awesome.Henry Fonda as a cool villian.
Sergio was cinema.Watch one of his movies sometimes and pay no attention to the music or any sound.Check out the camera work.The close-ups,the way a character will just step into a shot,the wide open landscapes.Sergio could say more with one close-up than most directors could say in a page of script.You can see the dirt in every crease of the characters faces.
The cuts are always exciting.A good example is the three way shootout in GBU.Cut to the eyes,then to the hands,then to the guns,etc.etc.
