It intrigues me that you call Slipknot 'rock' and also that you mention them in the same sentence as Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Particularly Zeppelin.
Now, you're definitely allowed to like Slipknot (I'm not a fan, but I have friends who are), but I don't see how you could compare them in the slightest to a band like Led Zeppelin, in terms of genre OR how good they are.

Also, I'm not a Rihanna fan, so couldn't care less about 'Rated R', but I have heard 'Russian Roulette' and seen the video clip, and personally I thought it was pretty awful. Not my style of music though. If we're talking Russian Roulette inspired songs, I prefer 'Dangerous Game' by 3 Doors Down.

For future reference, when i say "ROCK", i mean ALL of the sub-genres in the genre. Now, insulting Rihanna, and SLIPKNOT is a plain way to get your motherboard's butt kicked by people today. I mean come on, your insulting the entire next generation, not to mention Diddy, Jay-z, Ludacris, System of a down, Linkin Park, Mudvayne, oh let's see whom else. Oh yeah, Soulja Boy, Hurricane Chris, Island Def Jam, and all the current recording artisits, and record labels for the last twenty years. And while i love, and i mean love Sabbath, Floyd, and all the rest, it's the next generations time, it's not the 70's, 80's, or the first two years of the 90's anymore, it's time to listen to what we as a nation listen to now, as in current. So i take a portion of T.I'S song,"Live your life", which is a deuet with Rihanna, (YES, YES, YES, YES!!! OH MY GOD SHE ROCKS!!!!!), and i'll tell myself to "Just live your life."

Listen to some Otis Redding, some Cream, some Mozart, some Journey, some everything. You might not like it all, but it's all still there. (I'm not saying they influenced Slipknot by the way, just mentioning some great old music).

Also, it's possible to like some of the acts you mention, and dislike others.

First off, i'm not saying not listening to them is insulting them. I'm saying, that saying that they suck, which i've heard from multiple people, is insulting.

Next off, there are no bigger dicks then Hidi & Spencer.

And saying i think that everone who doesn't listen to what i listen to is a dick, thast's wrong, i may sound like it, but if i call you a dick, then imma come straight up, and tell you.

And saying that i hate the older music is wrong too, i like me Mozart,Journey, Johnny Cash, SOME Elvis, not all. Arethra Franklin. I have a wide range of likes in the music industry, i just thinkm that SLIPKNOT, and RIHANNA are perfect for the times of today, they represent two extremes in the music industry, and frankly there music fits the moods that i'm in, AND THAT'S WHAT I MEAN, if you can't see peoples music from the moods, then you are just saying that people are waisting air.

And another thing, on the conformist issue, i'm a crazy, psychotic dude, man. So that's it, i'm nuts, yah happy, i'm as coco as as daffy duck ;)

I've heard of most of the people and groups you've mentioned, but probably have only heard complete songs by System of a Down and Linkin Park. To be honest, I haven't a clue who or what Slipknot is, so I guess I'm way out of the loop. For the rest, their style doesn't interest me so I don't pay any attention to whether they are popular or not. Just because they are currently on the charts doesn't necessarily mean they produce good music. Don't forget, Britney Spears was a headliner at one time too, and we all know how great she is.

Do you know who Steve Earle is, or Jesse Winchester, or Phil Ochs, Nick Cave, Grant Lee Philips, Gram Parsons, Taj Mahal, Charlie Parker, Mose Allison, Todd Snider, Jakob Dylan, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Shawn Phillips? Pleasantly surprised to see Todd Snider mentioned in that crew; I feared he was mostly a "local" act. Met him a few times, and hung out with him at a camp-out once. He's a friend of a guy I used to work with. Todd's a really nice guy in person. Very down to earth and unassuming. And I've actually run into Jimmie Dale Gilmore AND Joe Ely in the freaking Home Depot near my house here in Austin. I never know what to say to famous people, so I just leave 'em alone, figuring that's probably the best thing to do for them. :)

I've been working on building my library and discovering all kinds of great stuff at lastfm. Slipknot is not in my library. I have discovered quite a few metal bands there that I really enjoy, but the vast majority of them are female-fronted. Basically, I like metal music without the snarly metal vocals, so those soprano singers are, in my opinion, the best thing to happen to metal. if you think Slipknot is the best thing to happen to metal, then go right ahead. And if you don't like any form of metal, that doesn't make you a bad person, either. I don't care, and I'm not here to argue. By the way jameron, you've been acting like you're here to argue and scream about what you think instead of actually discussing anything. That behavior from you may explain some of the reactions you've been getting. If you scream the same thing over and over and over and over, eventually folks will get tired of hearing it and won't want to talk to you anymore. Something to think about.
So I'm going to cruise back to lastfm now, to follow complex chains of tastes to more great music from all time periods that I never knew existed, forgot about, or have always loved and just want to hear over and over. If music is an interest of yours, that might be something you would enjoy as well. And hey, guess what? They have discussion forums there. Specifically for music. Just saying.

Hey Phoenix, could you let me know some of the bands you've been trying lately? What you just described, about liking metal without the snarly vocals, is exactly my problem with it too. I like the music side of things, but the vocals put me right off.

Oh! I am happy to share! Nightwish is one of my first loves in that area. They have some gorgeous music. They switched singers recently, but they still have that operatic feel, and Tarja went solo, but pretty much kept with the metal, so look both of those up. Within Temptation is also gorgeous, with some of the lightest vocals I've heard paired with metal. They have the occasional song with the growls, usually exaggerated on the live tracks, but mostly they leave that out. And I have to mention Evanescence, because I think they have some absolutely wonderful metal tracks with some gorgeous vocals, no matter how many people say they're too mainstream

Lessee... After Forever is kind of hit-and-miss with the demonic vocals. Their female singer is one of the most talented out there, I think, but about half their songs also have a growler in them. Luca Turilli's Dreamquest, what I can find of it, is amazing. I mean, amazing in that way that can bring tears to your eyes. Edenbridge is wonderful, and so far what I've heard is all angelic female vocals. Just today I ran across Octavia Sperati, which I'm pretty sure is an entirely female metal band, and I am loving them. Stream of Passion, Nemesea, Epica, Chalice, Imperia... all good so far. Oh! And Dragonforce is awesome, with a great non-death-growl male singer. And Markize, if I remember correctly, is female-fronted metal in French, for extra sexiness. Plug any of them in as a station on lastfm or pandora and you'll get all kinds of goodies.

I'm pretty eclectic. I've discovered and re-discovered so much stuff on this site in the last week, I'm just making with the musical bliss right now, I gotta say.

Well now, you do know how to keep me rambling! Neo-classical is... instrumental rock, I guess, would be the best way to put it. Stuff like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Vinnie Moore... I know there are tons of others. Basically a bunch of really talented guitarists just going to town. I love it, I really do. I can get so picky about vocals, so it's nice to eliminate those sometimes.
Now blues, I started with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Clapton. Through them discovered Johnny Lang, who is a ridiculously talented young man. I also like what I've heard of Indigenous. And I gotta say that James Marsters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer fame has a couple screaming blues tracks in his mix; 'When I Was a Baby' and 'Birth of the Blues.' Man has some talent. And don't let anyone tell you I'm biased because I'm like totally in love with him, the talent is genuine

I used to live in Austin too so I'm familiar with a lot of the local people. I once ran into Jimmie Dale at Sun Harvest and encountered Pat and Barbara MacDonald (Timbuk3) in the emergency room of St. David's South. I could also have mentioned Ely, Lucinda Williams, Ian Moore, Jimmy LaFave, Dale Watson, Alejandro Escavedo, David Garza, Reid Wilson etc. Also could have listed a lot more jazz artists like Monk, Coltrane, Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, and on and on.

Phil Ochs is my favorite performer of all time, and The Band my favorite group. I'll listen to almost anything besides rap/hip-hop and Top 40 Pop.

One of the best things about Phil's songs is that you can change just a few words and they are as relevant as when he wrote them. Change Viet Nam to Iraq or Nixon/Agnew to Bush/Cheney and the songs still have tremendous impact.

Hey PR,love your new avatar. Then again I've been re-watching all of Buffy recently. Yes,the non-stop cute attacks over Willow are tough but someone's gotta do it.
So when it comes to Metal I think Rammstein does it for me,although knowing German helps. Of course some people might argue that Rammstein is technically Industrial.
Gotta check out your new music picks when I get a chance.

Actually, I've been thinking of updating the avatar once again, so if there are any Willow moments you think would be apt for me, feel free to speak up.
Rammstein is a little growly for me. They're kind of at the threshold of growling; not as much as some, but still a bit much for my personal taste. Also, I don't speak much German. They may be industrial, but no one ever said industrial music can't also be metal. Certainly not me.
Reminds me, I should search for some NIN to put in my library... I wish I didn't have so many memories associated with industrial music.
So far I have plans to be at the Con, with the usual tentativeness on how definite that will be, money being what it is. I certainly want to go again; I had so much fun this year, yet didn't get to half of what I wanted to do. It's also up to you to make it this time, mister!
