1. Any theories of why my email account (at hotmail) is emailing itself/other people without my consent???

2. Is there anyway I can fix it?

3. If I can't fix the problem, what email should I switch to?

4. If I switch, can I move my inbox/folders to the new place?

5. If I switch, can I keep my FFF username?

A few questions;

1. Do you use Hotmail on the web (just through Internet Explorer?) or do you have an email application (like Outlook or Thunderbird)?

2. Have you tried changing your password? Often that can help.

3. If you use the web, and you've tried changing your password, perhaps try logging out on your main computer, and then wiping your cookies/temporary internet files. This can be done through "Tools-->Internet Options-->Delete Browsing History"
After this, if possible, try only using your account on a different computer and see if it stops happening, it could be a virus specific to that one computer.

If none of these work, let me know.
Hope I helped!

1. I've never had hotmail, so I'm not familiar with this problem. However,

2. I would try what BigRichard said to try.

3. If that doesn't fix it, I'd switch to either yahoo or gmail (I have both, and I haven't had any problems as of yet)

4. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure you can't migrate your information from your current account onto another email server (but I'd ask a techno geek, they know more than I do)

5. I would definitely consult Haken on this one--I just went into "My Firefly" and clicked on Edit Profile", and it looks like it will allow you to update your email without changing your name (it would only make sense as people change email accounts for various reasons). I'd still pass it by Haken as he's the admin.

Sorry I can only be vaguely helpful on this one :\

Gmail is definitely a great idea.
I've used hotmail, gmail and yahoo at various stages, and I'd say my current favourite is gmail. I just haven't had a problem with it yet, and it's nice and easy to use.

As for moving all your emails, I honestly don't know if there's a way to do it. The only way I can think of is using an email program such as Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird, and sync it with your current account, which will make it download all your current emails and folders to your computer. You can then sync the program with your new email address, and you can keep all those emails in the program, but use your new email address.
But then I have no idea if that would sync them with the email server, so you'd just have to start using the program to check your mail, or at least to see all of your old emails.

Sorry I can't help more with that.

And yeah, I believe you can just change it under settings, so you should be all fine there!

Absolutely positively. I'm doing it now, and I've had this username under four different e-mail addresses. One or two of them have actually been my REAL e-mail addresses; others were blind links just to keep "internet stalkers" off my trail. :)

Thank you everyone for all of your input. Hopefully, I can put this problem behind me now. I'm now a proud (Pride = Evil, Oh nooooo!!!) Gmail account holder, dude, person

BIGRICHARD's Question's Answers

A1. Used just IE with hotmail (well not anymore). I never used Outlook (on purpose), it always hates me.

A2. The password is changed.

A3. Done, done, and done.

FREELANCERTEX

3. Switched to Gmail. So far me likey!

4. Gmail (when I told it to *hugs Gmail*) transfered ALL my old emails!

KWICKO

*facepalm** or

Many a time have I edited my profile, and I just completely forgot I can change the email (although, to fair, I haven't actually done it here before).

Ah, it kind of reminds me of WKRP....

Bailey: "Johnny, could you please tell me where you live?"
Johnny: "You been there."
Bailey: "Yeah, but I need the address."
Johnny: "Address. You know, I walk by that mailbox every day."

Sweet Yoruk and Holy Hungus! Fast (important for someone on dialup), simple enough for stupids, yet also customiziable (out the proverbal wazzoo) enough for me to run it "my way", and does right what Hotmail intentionally does wrong.... Gmail rocks, and haven't even sent anything, yet!

*We REALLY need a facepalm emoticon. *VOTES* I guess this can work, but we also need one with the little dude banging it's (I find "it's" gender neutral) head against a computer monitor, 'cause that would be real appropriate.

Psst... *nudge, nudge*

What's a good free virus scanner, that also works with win98?

I was using AVG 7.5 until it stopped supporting my OS. Gorramit. How's a guy supposed to keep an old rig running right these days.

Almost didn't finish reading your post, was just going to say AVG!

It seems BitDefender would work for you...I just checked and their free edition says it works with Win98...

(sorry about the aussie site, automatically redirects me..not sure how it will take a cut-paste link)

Unfortunately, that's the only one I've heard about (good things too!), other than AVG.
Best of luck!

ECGORDON

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

I am of the opinion that there was no problem with someone hacking into your email account. It only takes about ten seconds for someone to change the "From" designation in any account, whether it be Hotmail or any other type. I did it myself on one of my Hotmail accounts a few weeks ago when I realized I had it set with my real name rather than "ecgordon."

The main purpose for people to do that and make it seem you are emailing yourself or someone is posing as you is to get you to click on some link within that email message. The same scheme is used by sending out "Undeliverable Message" emails, phishing scams by posing as Ebay or PayPal, and lately for me as amazon.com concerning a canceled order. It is particularly obvious when it comes to one of my accounts that is not associated with those companies in any way (I have about six different email accounts, three of them on Hotmail).

possibly ecg, and they often do just mirror your email, but the fact that it had somehow accessed his contact list wasn't a good sign. It probably wasn't a hacker, more likely some form of bug or evil cookie, but the fact that it had information from his account, rather than just his email address, points toward something more than just an email spoof. I would've thought.

Rahl: I have Avast and it works pretty well. You have to register it after a time (no money required) because their free one is funky for some reason, but it's been pretty good at protecting my computer thus far.
