America loves a winner!

The show, for those unfamiliar, pits the best marksmen in a team competition, to see who is the best. Teams compete against each other, as well as eliminating members.

These are all world class marksmen. They're the best of the best.

Having next to no personal experience w/ guns, I found this an interesting show, for several reasons.

For one, a while back, I posed a question about which fictional forensics team was better, from the t.v. shows of NCIS or Bones.

During the thread, it was pointed out that both Jethro Gibbs and Seeley Booth were Marine snipers. At the time, and based on no real knowledge of snipers at all, my idea was that Gibbs was the better of the 2 snipers, being older, but also because he fit ( what I assumed ) the profile better.

( and yes, we're talking fictional characters here, but based on medals and awards.... I think Gibbs had collected more hardware. I may be wrong )

Now, after seeing a couple of episodes of Top Shot, and seeing the sorts of folks who are truly the best in their field..... I'm kinda having second thoughts.

They sure do seem to act a bit more like Seeley than Jethro.

So, who's the better sniper ? Jethro or Seeley?

I'm way more scared of Gibbs than Booth, FWIW.

Honestly? I would have to follow your first instinct and say Gibbs.

He's got more years and experience on Booth, and I can't recall 'Bones' ever showing off Booth's long-gun skills, while NCIS has proven that's there still is a lot of bite left in an old dog, what with Gibbs picking off the terrorists holding Ziva and Tony captive at the start of 2nd most recent or the most recent season from a seemingly insane distance.

They're both rubbish.

Martin Riggs or John Casey could out shoot them both, any day, under any conditions.

Just joshing y'all.

On a slightly more serious note my cousin Cheryl has been the female world champion for the last few years at clay pigeon shooting. Not quite 'sniping' but still bloody impressive. Not sure if she has it this year or not.

Never seen NCIS, so I couldn't say which fictional sniper was better, but it seems to me the U.S. is a little over-represented on Top Shot, being as how there's only one foreigner even in it (Iain, the Brit).

There's a couple of the guys there that I think I could outshoot, but some of them are SCARY good. That young kid on the US Rifle Team is amazing, so years and experience aren't exactly all that. Also, I think it's Blake, the pistol champ, who nailed the one shot dead center - while looking the other guy straight in the eye!

We haven't seen the best these guys have got, not yet, so I'm waiting to be impressed with the folks who haven't impressed me yet. The first guy voted off sure was cocky about his ability with a rifle, though - and then didn't hit a goddamned thing when the pressure was on!

Those guys/gal on the show are not all Marines. I thought only one or 2 were, they seemed to want a varied selection from different backgrounds. One was retired cop, other just competition. The competition types have not shot a human with a difficult shot, for the most part.
Marine snipers are, for the most part, not glory hounds for public competition. They do compete, against themselves and their fellow snipers, but those results are not for public consumption.
Non-Marine Expert shooters, like on the show, can act more like Seeley all they want.
Marine Expert shooters are going to be much more like Jethro.
Seeley may have made the cut to get into Marine sniper MOS, but Booth was the better shot and progressed futher in the specialty, completing more missions.

As an aside, I recently saw the NCIS episode "One Shot, One Kill" with TJ Thune chastising the NCIS crew for being so outdated. This was the year before he was cast on Bones for the original season.

GEEZER

Keep the Shiny side up

I watched Top Shot once, but it was too much staged reality show for me.

The Marine snipers I've met at long range matches at Quantico seem very friendly and willing to share their knowledge of shooting and reading the wind. Don't talk too much about their own work, but will discuss the technicalities of "that 1200 meter shot through the window" etc. someone else (usually from another country or service) did.

I never said ALL the Top Shot contestants were Marine snipers, only that both Jethro and Seeley were. I was wrong. Booth was an Army Ranger sniper, and Jethro was a Marine sniper.

I'm pretty sure I saw that ep, but didn't put 2 and 2 together about TJ's later role. There may have been more than 1 ep where the agents were shown to be envious of other outfit's field gear.

Hell, the L.A. branch gets better toys than Gibbs' team.

I did not intend to imply that anybody said all the contestants were Marines. I regret if you inferred that to be my meaning. I was merely trying to point out that there would likely be a noticable difference between Marines and non-Marines. I was repeatedly told (by neutral observers) that was the case when I was a Marine.
